  1. I haven't been checking (why would I?) but my guess the secondary market online is extremely soft too. I think it was 1991, but I remember going to a Packer game at County Stadium and somebody just handing us 2 tickets.
  2. I can't see it happening either. Speaking of KC, how does Yost keep his job there? Firing old Ned has to be their next move.
  3. Gorman was off to a Rickie Weeks type start. The problem was Manning wasn't very good either. Remember, the previous August they traded their top prospect Kevin Bass in the Sutton deal. The team was showing some age starting in 83, they didn't have the prospects to supplant them and Harry Dalton, after having been aggressive in the FA market 4-5 years earlier with Bando and Hisle, was doing nothing in free agency. Personally I think Dalton panicked just a bit in dealing for Sutton. They were 4 1/2 games up with a month to play when he made that deal. For the prior 3 months, without Sutton, the Brewers were 54-29. Sutton's contributions were really a lot less than he gets credit for. In 3 of his 4 wins, the Brewers scored 14, 15, and 10 runs.
  4. I don't think throwing 31 pitches on a Wednesday will knock him out of a start for Saturday. Had he not pitched in relief it would be an entire week between his starts, so this was much like a between starts session.
  5. I'm not saying it's not possible to trade Ramirez, but his salary, age, and physical condition is going to limit what you get back for him. So what's the point, especially given that the salary you save will likely end up being spent on another overpriced mediocre starting pitcher who'd jam up a spot in the rotation that could go to a young pitcher. Trading Gomez, months after you've signed him at below market rate for his current production is not a wise move. It might net a nice return, but he's still young enough that he'd be around for another run at it in 2-3 years. Prospects are less certain. Aoki is the logical guy to move. His value won't get higher. A team needed help at the top of the order will covet him and he fits the salary structure of every team in the league. Yeah Schafer could replace either Gomez or Aoki, but he's more like an Aoki offensively and there would be less dropoff
  6. Lets say Bosch changes his story completely to MLB and that's used to initiate the suspension process. What lawyer isn't going to show the interview contradicting himself to the person hearing his appeal to a suspension threat? Now having interviewed this guy 5 weeks ago with this result, one would think ESPN would not trumpet this story as if suspensions where a done deal. But that's ESPN (ABC). Never let facts interfere with your narrative. MLB surely knows of this interview also. They surely know that conflicting testimony from the same guy won't hold up. But whether they suspend him or not, they seem determined that Braun is muddied as much as possible.
  7. I think the problem is with the idea MLB is seeking to suspend players. Shouldn't they be seeking the facts? The only real news was that this guy Bosch, under duress, is now cooperating with MLB. If Braun is telling the truth, and we don't know that, then Bosch would have to fabricate evidence to trigger a Braun suspension. If he has solid evidence that he supplied Braun, then he'll get suspended. It's not that complicated. Why report it like it's a done deal until this comes down unless you want to jack up ratings on Baseball Tonight? Braun has already been tried and convicted in the media thanks in large part to the way ESPN has spun the story anyway. I don't see how either way this turns out, he's more damaged than he already is. I also don't expect if it turns out he told the truth about his relationship with Biogenisis that we'll hear any mea culpas from ESPN or MLB. We now live in a culture where the IRS treats American citizens differently based on their political beliefs and smugly says they did nothing wrong while they plead the 5th. To think that it's not at least plausible that Braun is being railroaded here for some unknown reason is naive.
  8. That's too big a price for the Dodgers to pay for A-Ram, who's owed $20 million next year including a buyout for 2015. Even if they plan to pick up his 2015, that's 2 years of A-Ram for $30 million. With gimpy knees, the Brewers would be lucky to get any value back. I'd limit what I offered to the Red Sox to Aoki and Gallardo and a prospect. Bogaerts would be a great get, but Middlebrooks is more realistic, and I'd rather have Anthony Ranaudo than Matt Barnes. Lohse and Hart will have to really shine between now and mid July to get that deal from the Giants. By that time, Belt may start hitting and their struggling pitchers might come around. Weeks for a warm body is fine with me. Heck throw Lohse in this deal and also get back Chris Dickerson who can take over Schafer's job as 4th OF after the deal of Aoki to Boston goes through. I'd add Pena and Jungmann to the 2014 starting pitching mix. They'd also likely add some value FA on one year deals to the mix who if they perform well can be flipped.
  9. The guys the Brewers would presumably like to sell, Ramirez, Weeks, Hart, all either have fat contracts, injury issues or in Hart's case he's a short term rental on a bum knee. They aren't going to bring back much more than salary relief. Salary relief is great, but what's the Brewers biggest need? Starting pitching. So the Brewer unload the salary so they can make more Suppan, Wolf, Lohse type deals this winter? Ugh. Aoki still has some productive years, is cheap and controllable, and has an internal replacement presumably ready in Schafer. He's the guy to be dangling for decent prospects.
  10. Cheap? He's still owed $20 million including his buyout for 2014, or $30 million over 2014-2015. That's going to eliminate a fair chunk of teams, and greatly reduce the return in terms of players though the salary relief is nice. His knee issues also make him less attractive to NL teams.
  11. Weeks over his last 10 games is hitting .313/.353/.531. He's also hit a few balls hard that ended in outs which he wasn't doing earlier. So the timing of this move is rather curious. Perhaps he's doing what he did last year when it took him until June to get himself going. Maybe the Brewers see that he does better sitting a couple days per week and they preferred having a lefty bat to spell him.
  12. I'd take Lyle Mouton's career .280/.339/.420 from Juan Francisco. He was a tremendous minor league hitter who just didn't quite have the talent to play every day in the big leagues, nor the defense to be a great utility outfielder. But he could hit. Davy Lopes wasn't his biggest fan though.
  13. Can't agree more, and that's why I suspect somethings being worked on to move Weeks and then Gennett and Bianchi will be the platoon at 2B. Of course, if Francisco plays 1B, he's going to need a platoon partner too. I doubt that would be Weeks.
  14. His 1B play is limited but I would think he'd at least platoon there, perhaps with Bianchi now that Gennett is also on board. Francisco is a .270/.319/.476 hitter vs. RHP.
  15. The wouldn't bring up Gennett to sit. Have to think they are contemplating something with Weeks. I assume Francisco will now play 1B and they still have Bianchi and Yuni as utility guys. Weeks is not a utility guy.
  16. Reno is a hitters paradise. Cody Ransom put up huge numbers there in 2011. So did Wily Mo Pena and Ryan Langerhans. Ransom is on the Cub bench. Pena is struggling in Japan and Langerhans is hitting .250 in AAA. Betancourt would likely hit .330 and slug over .550 in Reno too.
  17. Marlins just DFA'd their winning pitcher from yesterday. There are worse options as 5th starter material and obviously he's cheap. Maybe worth a 3 start trial while Narveson rehabs?
  18. I got the Briggs half of the answer in seconds. I knew it was in Cleveland against the Indians too. I actually remember watching that game (in Fondy btw fondybrewerfan) as he was my favorite Brewer at the time. Briggs didn't need 14 innings either. He did in in 9, but needed a nice 5 run 9th inning to get his 6th AB. Briggs was batting leadoff that day (good move by Crandall given Johnny's OB skills). He led off with a single to right. doubled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th and 6th and then doubled in the 8th to get to 5 for 5. All 5 of those were off Dick Tidrow. You could say #12 owned Tidrow that day. He capped off his afternoon with a single off of Jerry Johnson in the 9th. Amazingly despite the 6 hits, Briggs didn't drive in a single run that day, and scored just twice.
  19. I do think they can save some money by non-tendering Axford, and letting Hart walk, and they can void Weeks' 2015 contract by benching him fairly often. Ramirez' deal also expires after 2014. So there's some wiggle room. Given their track record, do we really want them signing a pricey but not premier FA pitcher though?
  20. Yes, he will be the manager until the end of the year and possibly even longer. I don't see MA changing mnangers this time around. The team isn't even as good as the team that Yost had when he was fired. I also believe MA really likes Roenicke as the manager of the team and will have him kept even if there is a new GM. He won't like him nearly as much when people stop buying tickets. Yost was fired with a playoff caliber team that he wasn't getting to the finish line. Part of that was the division at the time was a lot weaker than it is now. Roenicke should be getting more out of this team than he is. There is definitely something missing. Call it an intangible, but we're not seeing good baseball. Players are to blame for sure too. Gallardo isn't the same guy. Even the guys with the gaudy numbers have had trouble in key situations. Injuries have been a factor for sure, but should not be used to excuse this mess.
  21. He would crush mistakes in the past too, but he's hitting the ball harder and more frequently to the opposite field and getting hits off of better pitches as a result.
  22. This year sure has the feel of 2006, when the Brewers went through 27 (that's right 27) pitchers, many of whom never appeared in a big league game after that season. Brewers are now at 16 and counting so they have a long way to go.
  23. "The owner signed free agent pitcher Kyle Lohse for $33 million over three years practically on the eve of the season over the objections of his general manager Doug Melvin" I'd heard rumors that Attanasio was behind the Lohse signing, but nothing stating that Melvin objected and Attanasio did the deal anyway. I've said before, if the problem is Melvin, it's an easy fix. If it's Attanasio, we have to hope he learns that a team in Milwaukee cannot be run like the Yankees. We do know Boras talked to Attanasio for several months prior on Lohse. He wouldn't have wasted his time if he didn't think Attanasio could and would override Melvin. He was right. Attanasio makes the big decisions. That is clear.
  24. I would trade Braun before I would trade Gomez. Not that I think there's any team out there that has enough in return to get Braun, but I just don't see the point in dealing a guy like Gomez who's career is arcing upward, and who is such a decent value. Braun's contract is indeed reasonable but there's a decent probability that by the last couple years he won't be the player he's been and that cost will become a bit of a burden. It also concerns me that he misses time every season with a variety of injuries. If history tells us anything, it's that as guys like that get older, these will get more numerous. I love what Aoki brings, but he's over 30 and now on a team apparently going nowhere. Leadoff skills like he has are invaluable to teams, and he should bring a very nice return given his contract situation too.
  25. Assuming he's the Hart of recent seasons, he adds depth to a lineup that runs out of steam after the 5th or 6th spot. Unfortunately, they are so buried now, all he might do is drop their draft position next year a few spots.
