    Anyone watching the first two games in front of full houses at home against a non-playoff Marlins team has to be worried. It's been a playoff atmosphere and the team has fallen flat. Guys like Anderson and Mears appear not ready for the pressure of the postseason, and there's not enough power to turn momentum in a game on one swing. They need bullpen help and there's a prime slugger just sitting there on the market. There was a time when Brewers made splashes. Sabathia and Grienke anyone? Now is the time.

    So assuming they make the playoffs, thinking small simply assures them of an early exit. We're witnessing this weekend how the team responds in a playoff atmosphere (full houses at home) and it's not good. Mears and Anderson aren't the type of relievers you want using to hold leads in the playoffs and the Brewers have been outhomered the last couple games by a young small market team. Imagine them trying to hold down power laden lineups like the Phils, Cubs or Dodgers (assuming their healthy)? Attanasio said on the telecast Friday that paying 1/3 of a year's salary for a rental player was not an issue. Would it hurt to lose a young arm in upcoming seasons? Who knows. The playoffs are an entirely different animal. Big bats like Suarez affect opposing pitchers. The Brewers do not have enough of that type of player. The focus should be on getting Suarez and at least one veteran reliever who can still bring it.

    Turns out Mears wrenched his back on his last warmup pitch yesterday, but decided to pitch through it??? I get that players never like to come out, but that was not the time to be a hero. I've never been completely sold on Mears as a high leverage guy. He wasn't very good down the stretch last year and with the race heating up this season, is he really all that reliable? That brings me to Myers. Could he be an asset as a late inning reliever?

    Where is this "if Joey Ortiz continues to struggle" coming from? Ortiz hit .277/.326/.422 in June and has hit .255/.283/.412 in July. Since June 1, he has 5 HR and 23 RBI and is slugging .418. Not only that he's playing gold glove caliber defense at shortstop. Ortiz isn't some guy who was a good field/no hit prospect coming up either. In essentially one full season at AAA, he posted a .904 OPS. His recent form is more like that guy. In fact if you compare Ortiz' first two major league seasons to Smith's first two, Ortiz' numbers are clearly better. In short, Ortiz is not struggling. He's a key reason this team has taken off the last couple months and he's a superior defender to Smith. Smith is a fine utility player who's turned into a solid hitter albeit in a weak division in the weaker of the two leagues.

    I think they should consider buying the contract of Jared Oliva. Perkins needs a little more time and Oliva's been putting up solid offensive numbers including 25 steals in 29 attempts and an .844 OPS

    I'm not ready to relegate Durbin to a career platoon player at 2B. He's a 2.0 WAR player in less than 100 games in the major leagues. Though he's short, he uses that to his advantage, plus he's got the build of a power hitter and I think he's a 15-20 homer guy in the next couple years. If they were to add Suarez, I think Yelich plays more in the outfield down the stretch and Durbin still is a big part of the team, There's also this thing called the "clutch gene", that some of us still believe in and Durbin has it in spades.

    Not even a mention of Robert Gasser who looked awfully good last season before his elbow went. Very curious as to where in his recovery he is 13 months after TJ

    For their careers, Vaughn and Bauers have produced very similar HR rates. Both have hit 1 HR every 29 or so ABs in the majors. Hoskins is closer to 1 HR every 16 ABs but as a Brewer it's closer to one every 18.5. Over a month's worth of games, it would take a slight uptick for the combination of Bauers and Vaughn to come close to a typical month for Hoskins. If by end of July, it looks like Hoskins won't be returning anytime soon, a guy like Ryan O'hearn makes sense as a trade target.

    Bad ABs up and down the lineup all day with the exception of Chourio. Taking strikes and swinging at balls which they did all day is not a formula for winning. Koenig gets beat on his 3rd best pitch on the key AB of the game. Where was the 97-98 mph heater in that situation? Was this effort, one of the poorest of the season, a result of the 2nd day hangover from getting in late after a night game Thursday and having to play a day game after a night game Friday? Probably had something to do with it. Hopefully they'll be rested for tomorrow or they'll lose another winnable series.

    Durbin has experience at SS in the minors, and I think Turang is fully capable of playing there from time to time as prior to this season, Durbin was primarily a 2B.

    With Mitchell's return now a mystery, hanging on to Bauers is far more likely than it was a week ago. Bauers is a valuable depth option and has proven himself as a decent PH late in games. Bauers has pinch hit 105 times in his career, while Vaughn has only done it 14 times. Though Bauers isn't great in the outfield, he's better than Vaughn. I think Vaughn was acquired to replace Hoskins, but first he has some issues to iron out in the minors.

    He's hitting .278 over his last 12 games and they love his defense. Even if they add a bat, and he's relegated to utility role the last couple months, I don't believe they will give up on Ortiz just yet.

    Wilken belongs in AAA after this first half. He was drafted 18th in first round for just this kind of power production. He's played 179 games in AA. He's got a .942 OPS this season in almost 300 PA. What else can he gain at AA? He may have dropped off some people's radar, but he's earned his way back.

    Seriously? Suarez is one of the premier power bats in all of baseball. If there ever was the perfect rental for this Brewer team it's Suarez. Cubs have both speed and power. You need both to play with the big boys. The fact that he plays 3B is icing on the cake. Not to mention a move like that would send a clear message to the Cubs that it's not just a wild card the Brewers are looking for.

    So with 2 outs and nobody on in the 5th, Patrick gives up a double to Duran, and even though Patrick has thrown a reasonable 79 pitches, instead of walking Devers there, out pops Murphy to remove Patrick to bring in Hall. Now Hall is asked to cover multiple innings and throws 33 pitches, likely making him unavailable for next couple games. So Megee can walk Devers intentionally, but it's too much to ask Patrick who's throwing a shutout to get the next man and start the 6th.

    So what's the point of not pitching Ashby in the 7th exactly? His stuff was nearly unhittable and nobody's ever described Alexander's stuff as unhittable. I honestly thought Alexander balked on purpose in the 8th figuring there's no way they'd let him pitch to Cruz with first base open. As for the hitters, it was pretty easy to figure out who had late night last night. Hope it was worth it Brice. Nice job today. Not easy to make 6 outs and leave a half dozen or more runners on base. Was Bauers your side man?

    The correct move in that game was to take your chances with Patrick against Henderson with 2 outs in the 5th. As long as Patrick keeps the ball in the yard, the worst that can happen is the game is tied in the top of the 5th with two outs. If you don't like the matchup, walk him intentionally. I'd have given Patrick at least 2 more hitters to get through the 5th and then send him out there for the 6th. At that point in the game, the Brewers had 5 more innings to score, and a tie or a one run deficit is nothing. A starter's job is to keep you in the game preferably for 6 innings. He needed 4 more outs at that point. The problem isn't a lack of trust in the bullpen, it's a lack of trust in the starter being able to minimize damage in close games.

    The argument that they don't have room on the 40 man doesn't make sense. The only guy on the 60 man DL they need to open up a spot for is Hall, and he figures to replace Alexander. So unless they insist on hanging on to Payamps, they should be able to make room for Misiorowski. Count me in the group that thinks a guy with the dominant stuff shouldn't be wasting his arm talent getting minor league hitters out. Especially when the manager panics when any of Patrick, Priester, or Myers has to face any major league hitter with solid career numbers the third time in a game. None of those guys is going to take a step forward as a starter unless they are given the chance to succeed or fail in that situation.

    The starters are only giving them 5 innings or less because Murphy takes them at the first sign of trouble starting in the 4th inning. Today Patrick got the first two outs in the 5th, then gave up a double which brought up Henderson. Let the kid earn it. It was the 5th inning with a 1-0 score and you have a tired bullpen. Patrick was at 89 pitches. If he gives up a hit to Henderson, it's still only 2-0 and your offense still has 15 outs left. If he gets Henderson, he should be able to start the 6th. His next two relievers only added 4 outs. By the way, why the reluctance to release Payamps?

    Meanwhile, 31 year old David Bote sits at home "retired". Not that it means anything, but Bote was Dodgers spring MVP. You have to wonder if the Brewers have made any contact with Bote to lure him back after he refused a AAA assignment by the Dodgers.

    A headliner with a .604 OPS in A ball? I'm not sure he could crack the current Carolina lineup. I'd ask for former Brewer farmhand Weston Wilson as part of any deal.

    Monasterio isn't in Ortiz' class defensively. I would agree that the hitting coaches need to be on the hot seat.

    When Wilken was drafted, my guess is they were targeting 2025 as his debut season. He was obviously set back with injury, and until showing very positive signs the last month, hasn't performed all that well. But he has an elite power/patience tool that makes him in my mind every bit as intriguing as Pratt especially for an organization so lacking in power bats. They have pitching nearing or at major league ready that's as strong as it's ever been in recent memory and Arnold deserves credit for that. How he manages to incorporate it into the major league roster will determine the short term success of the major league club, but I think Wilken is starting to show why he was taken 18th overall and a year from now, he might be that missing power they so desperately need.

    You never bring in McGill in that situation. You're basically giving the runner on first a free base. Somebody tell Murphy that 6'8" relievers are slow to the plate. Ultimately it was offensive failure in the top of the 9th that cost them.
