  1. The .396 BABIP is because he's hit the ball hard almost every time up. It's a stat that has no meaning. Have you watched the games? He hasn't lucked into his stats. How can you possibly know he's strictly a backup? Because he doesn't have the pedigree of a first round pick in his background? Because one team released him? Sure he probably won't hit .350. How many guys do? But based on what we've seen, isn't it in the realm of possibility that McGehee is a .280-.290 hitter with 15-20 HR power over 600 ABs? Those are above average numbers at 2B. With Weeks out, the Brewers should find out what they have in McGehee. The Brewers did the exact same thing with Podsednik a few years ago and created a lot of value in the trade market out of a waiver claim. They have the potential to do just that with McGehee. The smart move is to play him everyday at 2B and let Counsell return to his role as late inning defensive replacement, double switch guy, and backup to Hardy.
  2. Mitch Miller is a senior RHP from Jacksonville State (Donovan Hand was his teammate there). His career stats are unencouraging, and he posted a 6.37 ERA with a 13/12 K/BB and 43 hits allowed in 29.2 innings this year (four starts/16 relief appearances). Michael Marseco should thank him for contributing to his 1076 OPS at Samford last year. Connor Lind is a senior SS from Furman University. His best year was his junior year, when he hit .322/.406/.367, but he slumped to .263/.315/.293 this year. His profile says he "possesses good range, consistent glove, and fine arm". He's from Chicago. Maybe Mitch will organize a Brewer farmhand choral group? That's one for the older fans out there.
  3. Perhaps not, but being fooled by a pitch from time to time does not make him craptastic, either.0 for 28 does though.
  4. We've all read about people close to others that are suffering from pain having "sympathy pains" like a husband feeling abdominal pain as his wife is having contractions. I think this team is so close that hitters are having sympathy slumps for Bill Hall. Everyone likes Bill and hates to see him struggle like he has again so subconsciously they are all slumping with him so that he doesn't feel so alone. Don't laugh! Beats the theories I read from the hitting coaches of recent vintage (Wynegar, Skaalen, Sveum). The solution is therefore for Hall to start hitting!
  5. Did you miss the strikeout on the ball that bounced up there yesterday? Hitting one ball decent a day won't get it done.
  6. The performance by Burns (7 IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB) was a statement. With the stakes being raised with a Milwaukee rotation spot open, he showed he's up to the challenge. Coupled with his 4 shutout innings for the Brewers, I have to think he's going to get strong consideration.
  7. I can't believe anyone is worrying about an extra year for Parra. He'll be lucky if he ever gets to his second arbitration year. He's been worse than Wes Obermueller over a pretty long stretch and it's going to take more than a couple good starts in AAA to convince any team (much less the Brewers that witnessed his struggles close up) that he's ready to win in the majors. It's not like he wasn't given chances.
  8. I think he should get sent to AAA or AA but lets be realistic here, his 'poor second half' last year was a couple bad starts at the end of the season. He had 2.76 K/BB in the 2nd half which is fantastic. Don't try to make it sound worse than it is. He has not been able to throw strikes this year and it finally caught up to him over the past few starts. He was 2-6 with a 5.32 ERA in the 2nd half last year. So what that his K/BB ratio was good? Hitters hit .299/.358/.449 off him. He was very hittable then. He's worse this year but overall since midseason last year he's 5-14 with an ERA well over 6. I stand by my statement.
  9. For a while? I think you just saw the last of Manny Parra in a Brewer uniform. If he does start putting up numbers against AAA hitters, they'll unload him on another unsuspecting team.
  10. The decision not to demote Parra two starts ago might come back to haunt them. He's been terrible since the AS break last year.
  11. I'd do Parra for Bedard. Especially since they took 2 college pitchers with their first two picks. Parra may be what he's been for his whole career. Even if he does develop, it may not be for another couple years, when they stand a better chance today of having guys in their system ready than they did 2 days ago.
  12. It's interesting that Hall, Hart and Cameron have all been used as PH today, but not Hardy.
  13. I'm kind of wondering if it might be Washburn. He's been terrific this year and especially good recently (2 ER in his last 3 starts). He'd also be a guy they'd have a shot at re-signing.
  14. Melvin was on TMJ this morning and he talked a lot about the need for another lefty reliever but they have internal candidates for that job.
  15. Melvin also stressed the desire for a 2nd lefty in the pen this morning. I don't know if that means anything's cooking or that the "internal solution" is McClung to the rotation and either Swindle or Chris Narveson to the Brewer bullpen. Narveson's been very sharp lately in middle/long relief.
  16. Fielder and Braun last year when they were swapped comes to mind.I don't recall either Braun or Fielder saying they were bothered when they were swapped. A lot of guys perform better in one place or another, but most guys don't use where they are hitting as an excuse. It's a small thing and may not be significant at all, but it just bothered me because I would think an All Star caliber player would have enough confidence to be able to hit anywhere.
  17. Melvin strongly hinted this morning on WTMJ that it's put up or shut up time for Parra by saying his next start was "a very big one" and that if a change is necessary it will come internally. It will be very interesting to see if Burns starts for Nashville on the same day that Parra is pitching.
  18. You can sugarcoat it all you want, but when a middle of the order hitter is batting .219/.298/.344 in the middle of June, that is bad. I've seen many a Hardy at bat this year where he's taken pitches down the heart of the plate and then swung at breaking stuff in the dirt. Why is he scuffling? Is he feeling the heat of Escobar's lingering presence in the organization? Who knows? But it bothered me last year when he didn't feel "comfortable" hitting 8th in the order. I can't remember any really good hitter being bothered by where he was hitting in the order (other than the flaky Soriano). Regardless, this is a production business. You don't produce and your job is in jeopardy. I would imagine Macha will give him another breather with a couple days off to see if that works again. But sooner or later that gets old too (see Hall). Hardy should be right in the prime of his career right now. He's by far the biggest disappointment to me on a team with a number of them. I would hope we see Counsell at SS and McGehee at 2B for a few days.
  19. Ender is correct. People are judging Gerut and Catalanotto on a handful of scattered AB's as a Brewer. Give one of them some steady AB's and let's see what they do. They both have a track record of major league success unlike a Nelson or even Duffy. Look what TGJ is doing in San Diego. Not that he'll keep up a .352/.453/.463 pace, but he's getting steady playing time after full time work in Nashville. His one opportunity when Cameron was suspended last year passed him by when he got hurt. It might behoove them to use Gerut if anything to make that deal look not so lopsided.
  20. When Soriano's hot, he can hit anything at anytime and hit it a long way. Ramirez has earned his reputation in the clutch. Those are the guys you can't let beat you. The other guy you need to bear down on is Zambrano. Really.
  21. I think he will be compared to Eldred a lot. Big right hander from the Big Ten. By the way, Eldred started his career at Beloit.
  22. Why not? Catalanotto's 2008 splits vs. RHP: .280/.345/.407. Catalanotto career splits vs. RHP: .292/.358/.449 Gerut's 2008 splits vs. RHP: .296/.351/.494. Gerut's career splits vs. RHP: .281/.341/.467 What am I missing? Those aren't great numbers but they're better than what Hart's done since September 2008.
  23. This was the year Hardy was set to solidify his status as an elite SS. He hasn't done it yet. I'm really shocked he hasn't. They cannot hold a talent like Escobar back much longer and Melvin knows it. Parra holds the key to whether he'll be traded in season. They can't/won't sent Parra down now because they don't think they have a better alternative. But they won't win anything with a guy taking the hill every 5 days with an ERA of nearly 7.
  24. Bad, yes. Worse than Dunn, no. He has a better arm than Dunn, a slightly better FP, plays RF and you have to give him extra consideration for playing in a bigger outfield in Coors.
  25. When did Bruce Froemming start posting on here? The ump initiated the contact. Cameron just held his ground. Umpires have to be able to take it. It goes with the job. They have the power and should just walk away. The umpire should be suspended for bumping a player. Most umpires are arrogant. People don't pay to see umpires. They pay to see players. Cameron lost his cool when the umpire didn't keep his.
