  1. Most are making more of this than it is. This move is more Fielder in 05 than it is Braun of 07. Gamel's up now because Nelson used up whatever boost he got from his great spring. Catalanotto needs 2-3 weeks of steady AB's to get ready to take over main PH role. Gamel benefits with some big league exposure and he'll DH in Minnesota. Nelson's a nice kid a good AAA player. We wish him well. As Macha said last night, hopefully he'll get another shot somewhere. The fact is, he had to produce out of the gate in the role he was in and he didn't.
  2. I believe he may have already passed through waivers. Teams don't have to announce that a player is on waivers. Haudricourt wasn't making up the term outright, the Brewers used it in their press release. Macha alluded to it in his press conference that Nelson has several days to accept or decide to become a FA.
  3. No doubt Stern (like Gwynn) is keeping a close eye on Duffy's struggles.
  4. Duffy could well be in trouble at some point but not from Catalanotto. He's got a little more extensive experience and a good glove in a defensive position. But even he's going to have to get some hits or they might take another look at Gwynn who's producing (.314/.393/.398)at his best ever rate in AAA. Gwynn may not be a big upgrade, but he has the advantage of playing every day.
  5. Nobody's going to claim Brad Nelson. Teams aren't looking for AAA first basemen with no record of major league success on their major league rosters. Yes he might wish to find a job in another organization and if he does, so be it as he was never going to be an everyday player for the Brewers. Nelson produced numbers at AAA last year that one would expect from a 1st baseman. They were nothing special. He had a hot spring. He has no record of major league success otherwise and he's 26. He had to hit to keep his job. Is that tough given his circumstances? Sure, but he's been around long enough and once you're on a roster, you have to produce. Had Nixon had a decent spring, no way Nelson would have made the team over Nixon. Catalanotto's a career .292 hitter who's never hit below .269 or posted an OBP under .325. He might be a bit past his prime but only his slugging showed much of a dropoff last year. He certainly deserves a major league roster spot as soon as his timing is down. As for his defense? How much defense has Nelson played this year? His job is going to be to get some hits late in games and maybe give Hart a day off once in a while. Rosenthal is absolutely right about them needing a lefthanded bat off the bench. Duffy and Nelson are a combined 3 for 48. Duffy at least provides defense.
  6. Hinske is a proven major leaguer with nearly 3,000 major league AB's who's appeared in 2 World Series and been AL ROY. Nelson's major league career is hanging by a thread. A team like the Pirates can afford to give Nelson more time, but the Brewers have higher aspirations. They are not comparable in the least as far as what they've accomplished.
  7. The Brewers have been lucky so far in that neither Duffy nor Nelson has been needed for other than PH and very spot duty. But after outstanding Aprils, Cameron and Hart are showing signs of reverting to the mean. Cameron is hitting .212/.316/.364 in May and Hart is hitting .220/.273/.293 and hasn't hit a HR in nearly a month. That was to be expected but if they fall into prolonged slumps, then Macha has little option but to hope they come out it. He doesn't have guys that he can stick in there for a couple days like he had with Counsell in for Hardy.
  8. Green has a 1.18 WHIP and doesn't turn 25 until August. No way I'm replacing him for a guy with a 7.88 ERA in 3 AAA starts who's a year and a half older. The link has his stats wrong. He was 1-1 with a 4.11 ERA in AA before going to AAA where's he's posted the 7.88 ERA. I'd hang on to Wright too for a bit longer. Green's been a great under the radar pickup IMO.
  9. Brandon Moss has been terrible for Pirates. Jaramillo has been quite good behind the plate. I think Pirates will use Doumit in LF when he comes back. They need all the bats they can get. I don't see them trading Doumit. His contract is reasonable. Maybe the Pirates would take Nelson for Hinske once Doumit is back playing.
  10. Spivey wasn't producing anyway in 2005. If you recall that year there was a big emphasis on ending the streak of losing seasons and not finishing like they did in 2004 when the team fell apart with a lot of veterans on it. Weeks, even in 2005, was an improvement over Spivey. Weeks was already down to 1 remaining option in 2005. He was going to get thrown in there one way or the other. As it turns out, they were able to use that one option in 2007 to send Weeks down when he was slumping badly. Hardy got the job because the prior year starter, Counsell was gone and Hall had a poor year in 2004. They long had ticketed Hardy as the starting SS in 2005. A huge reason he started so slow that year was because he missed most of 2004 at AAA.
  11. I don't think it was a bad move by Dusty. He had a fresher bullpen in game 2 of series and they won. In 1979, Bamberger went to Sal Bando in the 4th inning. Bando went 3 full innings followed by Gantner and Buck Martinez for an inning each. That might have been the earliest any manager went to position players in a game. Brewers lost 18-8 but Bando, Gantner and Martinez were only charged with 3 of those runs.
  12. Milledge won't get voted in so the whole discussion is silly in my opinion. There's not nearly enough voters that are motivated by the idea of messing with the process to offset the vast majority that vote either for their own players or the best players. That Red Sox fans think they can sway the entire voting just shows how arrogant they are. BTW, I'm keeping an eye on Milledge who might be a nice steal acquisition for the Brewers this offseason.
  13. The value of having a 2nd big lefty bat in the lineup would be negated by making room for Gamel by dealing Fielder. Now eventually Gamel could well end up at 1B after Fielder does leave, but not before he spends a year or two at 3B so they can go with that lineup that includes 2 lefty boppers. The room in the lineup will come from a deal involving a right handed bat or by Cameron's departure through FA. If that happens Hall could return to CF, assuming he's not dealt also.
  14. Hall played the entire 2007 season in CF. I think that trumps McGehee's limited OF time. Personally, I loved the move and don't think Yost would have made it. Part of Hall's value is his versatility. Somehow, once he signed the multiyear deal, Yost got it in his head that he had to limit Hall to one position. To me that's not getting the bang for your buck. Hall wasn't all that bad in CF the second half of 2007. There's no doubt in my mind he could play everywhere but catcher. Right now he's needed at 3B, but with Gamel as the top prospect, that's a temporary situation at best. Unless he's traded, next year Hall could be seeing more time back in CF if they don't re-sign Cameron.
  15. This could help the Cubs at the expense of the rest of the Central. Cubs play the Dodgers 4 times in next 50 games. They are the only NL Central team that will play the Mannyless Dodgers. If I had one beef about suspensions, it's that affect more than just one team. Why not just fine him 1/3 of his season's salary?
  16. His error rate last year (32 in 132 games) and fielding pct (.918) were better than any extended stretch for Braun at 3B in the minors or majors (Braun's minor league FP was .899), and so significantly better than his 2007, that I think there is every reason to be optimistic. I think it's natural that he would put some extra pressure on himself out of the gate and he's now steadier.
  17. Hall's no dummy. Cameron's a FA next year. Gamel is not going to spend 2010 in the minors. Barring a deal or Cameron being brought back (if he keeps this up, he might price himself out of range), Hall's best shot at starting is back in CF. Volunteering to play LF plants the seed that he's still willing to play OF.
  18. Brevard has at least a half dozen guys who should find their way to Huntsville in 2009 especially considering that the Huntsville roster is made up of a lot of older non prospect types.
  19. It's the other way around. It would be unethical for a runner to stop because of an injury. He's paid to keep running. Injuries are part of the game. Trainers are paid to attend to injured players.
  20. Macha this morning said Hall was feeling better after the game. He said he'd probably sit out tonight's game and be ready in Cincinnati. The fact that Snell is going for Bucs might have something to do with his getting tonight off.
  21. Giving every starter the extra day rest will pay off more down the line than skipping one guy, especially Parra who has more trouble finding his rhythm than any of the other guys. Parra is 26 and 5 years removed from surgery. He can't be babied any more. They need him to deliver.
  22. Makes the most sense. Having Gamel's bat in the lineup is less of a dropoff than either Duffy or Nelson. Even though he's never played LF, I'd take Hall out there over Nelson. They can always make defensive adjustments late in games if needed.
  23. Brewers won't be seeing Carlos Zambrano this weekend. He was placed on the 15 day DL, with the hamstring strain he suffered trying to beat out a bunt yesterday.
  24. They can (and should) find another solution other than either Duffy or Nelson as a replacement for Braun if he were to end up on the DL. In Nelson's case, there is not only an offensive dropoff but a defensive one as well. Duffy is fine defensively but is basically Tony Gwynn Jr. with his bat. Internally, they could just stick Gamel out there in LF and let him learn on the job. People seem to forget too that Hall spent a year in CF. Is it that far fetched to put him in LF and bring Gamel up to play 3B? Externally, vets Jenkins, Edmonds, Catalanotto are still out there and still capable of being productive.
  25. I'm less worried about the long term implications than the fact that the choices to replace him came down to Chris Duffy and Brad Nelson. I've said this before, but they need a veteran LH corner OF bat to back up Braun and Hart.
