  1. Teams are looking at Starlin Castro there too. I'd take Castro over either of those two.
  2. Why focus solely on Cron, when Encarnacion is out there and likely available on a one year deal?
  3. White Sox were desperately looking for a LH OF bat, and quite frankly the FA market for LH hitting corner OF is pretty thin. Mazzara had an .844 OPS vs. RHP in 2019. I'd say it's another good deal for the White Sox.
  4. Three years (age 34, 35, 36) of David Price for $48 million? Absolutely. Of course it's not without risk (no signing is) but where the Brewer payroll is now and their need for an established starter? Cole Hamels just signed a one year deal at age 36 for $18 million and was paid $43.5 million over his age 34 and 35 seasons.
  5. You can't be serious, right?? They need a LEGIT #2 at worst, none of those guys are even solid #4's. How do any of them improve the rotation significantly?? They might as well light their money on fire. If that is your thought process, I hope you are fully prepared for disappointment. Just be willing to say “bad on me” when Miley pitches like a solid #2 for the Brewers next year Just bring back Jimmy Nelson for couple million and incentives. I have a feeling he's going to surprise a lot of people.
  6. He hit very well in AAA in 2018 and 2019 (.338/.365/.558 in 2018 and .320/.343/.587 in 2019) and that was in less hitter friendly International League Hasn't translated to the big leagues though his 2019 major league OPS was considerably higher than it was in 2018. His Domincan Winter League numbers aren't encouraging. Has a little pop, but his defense at SS in the minors was quite bad. Strictly a fill in type in case of injury. Isn't close to the overall player Perez has been, but has options.
  7. If the Brewers were that enamored with Keuchel, wouldn't they have pursued him last winter/spring when he was the last man standing? I don't see it. I concur with the Suppan/Lohse comparison. That would be a very Doug Melvin type move.
  8. Guerra gave them 83+ solid innings out of the bullpen. They better have a lot of arms, because it might take 3 to replace that kind of workload.
  9. Taylor was tearing it up at San Antonio and then went 4 for 10 in his first major league AB's. More importantly he only fanned once. It's possible Taylor is being mentioned as potential trade piece, in which case the signing makes sense.
  10. Definitely a trade. I feel like there will be a trade and a signing, but I do think a trade is going to happen in the next week. They’re getting to the point, in terms of lack of trade assets and plenty of $, that they’d be better off utilizing free agency to try and keep what few decent prospects they have. Plus there Are options currently at all positions of need on the market right now There's always options but they need to focus on quality options before they're all gone. They need one impact bat and one starter to be their number 2 behind Woodruff. The best bat out there is Rendon, but he's probably beyond their reach. Castellanos would look great in the lineup though he requires some moving around of their current pieces. Trading for Dominic Smith while taking on a some payroll with a Lowrie makes sense too. Bumgarner makes sense to me but if they can't get him, I'm fine with them targeting Robbie Ray in a deal. Hard not to like Ray's 235 K's in 174 innings. With only one year of control, Brewers should have the pieces to get him.
  11. At first glance, I'm fine on Flores, though I prefer Starlin Castro who's been about as reliable as they come with OPS+ between 93 and 106 over the past 4 seasons, and 73 to 115 over his career. Plus he plays every day. Those aren't All Star numbers but he's reliable piece and he puts the ball in play at a decent rate. He got his first real action at 3B in 2019 and was fine there and has plenty of experience all over the infield. Brewers have a huge hole at 3B and 1B. If they can't get a guy like Rendon, they need to fill those spots as best they can and add the big bat in the OF if they have to while moving Braun to 1B,
  12. Considering the guys who've jumped ship, I don't think a Thames return is likely though it's possible but I'm guessing he's looking for a 2 year deal in the $12-15 million range. The Thames/Braun scenario only means they'll have to spend and get an outfielder, and paying Thames might preclude them from a guy like Castellanos. If they got Castellanos, they'd want to pair the cheaper Smith with Braun at 1B.
  13. I'm very ambivalent about Sutton. I think they still had enough to win the division without giving up their number one prospect at the time, Kevin Bass and a promising LH pitcher in Frank DiPino and he didn't pitch all that great in September. In his last 5 regular season starts in 1982, he got 53 runs from the Brewer offense. He did win a big one to turn around the series vs. the Angels but he was awful in the World Series. Haas had struggled in a couple starts leading up to that trade so essentially Sutton replaced Haas in the rotation, though Haas was very good the entire month of September in 2 spot starts and 4 relief appearances. Sutton was a huge reason they didn't repeat in 83, winning just one game after July 14. Brewer's Of in 83 was pathetic. Oglivie started going downhill with just 13 HR. Gorman got off to a horrendous start and was traded for Manning who couldn't handle the pressure of replacing a folk hero, and Charlie Moore who was a backup catcher with little power starting in the corner OF. Bass might not have been quite ready to help in 83, but he likely would have played everyday and he was an All Star by 86.
  14. A sleeper out there is Ivan Nova who was 7-5 with a 3.72 ERA the 2nd half for the White Sox, including a 7 game stretch in July and August where he allowed a total of 5 earned runs over 7 starts. He also allowed just one earned run in two starts against the Cubs.
  15. My only issue with Smith is that he's still somewhat of a work in progress. His 2018 season both at AAA and the majors was very underwhelming and while he bounced back in 2019, it was in a small sample of 200 or so PA. That being said, it's probably worth the chance with the price being reasonable given the alternatives like Mitch Moreland have decent but unspectacular track records and the Brewers don't have quality at the position in the minors.
  16. If not Rendon, I'd rather have Starlin Castro than overpay Donaldson. Castro started 42 games at 3B last year for the Marlins. Furthermore, he was an iron man having appeared in all 162 games and the same unspectacular but nevertheless productive hitter he's always been. Put him in Miller Park and he'll hit 25 HR and 35 doubles
  17. If they can add another starter who'll give them 6+ innings, I'd have Suter start. He was very valuable with Chase Anderson usually going just 5. I think they need Peralta as a late inning guy. They should be able to find bridge guys or they can just bring back Nelson for that role.
  18. Speaking of Colome, if the White Sox don't contend as they hope to, Colome is a great midseason trade target.
  19. Great get. Finally some good news! Narvaez is as close to Grandal offensively as there is. Badly needed a LH bat after the departures of 3 of them. Count me in the pitch framing skeptic group.
  20. In the same thread guys who keep saying it's early as one after another FA who would really help the Brewers goes off the board on almost a daily basis, yet those same are excited that the FA market has been so active earlier this year. Sure it's like 16-17 weeks till the season, but every day the FA market gets thinner. Agents aren't stupid. They saw what happened last year. There aren't going to gems in the bargain basket this year.
  21. Next season is 2020. 2015 performance is not relevant
  22. Apparently they are getting their info from Brewer apologist and mouthpiece Tom Haudricourt who's crying poor in an article today.
  23. I think it will be a lower level guy. They need to hold on to Taylor. Right now he's their 5th outfielder and there's a pretty big gap to their 6th.
  24. Mets are said to be wanting to unload a bad contract in a package with Smith. One such contract is that of Jed Lowrie who's owed $10 million. Lowrie was out most of last year with only token appearances in September. Since the Brewers are also without a 3B at the moment, and Lowrie has fair amount of experience there, it might not be a bad idea to take on that contract to get Smith assuming it means Brewers would not have to offer much in return. If Lowrie should show he's healthy in Arizona and he could return to something close to his 2018 form, then the Brewers will have filled two holes. If he doesn't look up to it in Arizona, then they can look to deal for a 3B, or they could bring in a Jake Lamb as competition for Lowrie and perhaps he can rebound to his past prowess.
  25. The problem is you are again getting two guys that only play 1B. Even with a 5 man bench you want a little versatility. I like Neil Walker for the last spot. Plays 1B-3B and can be an emergency 2B. Cheaper too, maybe $1.5-2M. Cron had an OPS of over 1.000 vs. LHP and Moreland had an OPS just under .900 against RHP. Combined they equal an All Star. They have enough versatile players to get by. Thames played some OF but essentially he was only a 1B and so was Aguilar. They need bats to replace a lot of thunder that's gone. How can I put this. They've lost a ton of offensive production. They don't need a bunch of Neil Walkers. They need top flight major league bats not guys like Walker who are hanging on as the 25th man on some team. The problem with the FA at 1B is there's no one guy who's an everyday solid 1B. Cron kills LHP. Moreland wears out RHP. They paid $18 to get Grandal's production at catcher. I think they could get both Cron and Moreland for something under $18 million combined and solve take away 1B as a problem. In fact, not only would it not be a problem, it might give then production comparable with the best 1B in the league. With Arcia and Urias, they have two guys who can play anywhere in the infield. They still need to come up with a 3B and they need him to be no worse than average and whether he can play multiple positions should not be a primary factor.
