  1. It wasn't in high leverage situations, but he threw the ball extremely well in his last two appearances. What have they to lose by guaranteeing say $1.5 million and giving him incentives?
  2. Sign Moreland and Cron and let them platoon. Other option would be to trade a low level prospect for Dominic Smith and Jed Lowrie's salary. Lowrie could then be given a shot at the 3b job this spring and if he's not up to it health wise, then deal for help at 3B.
  3. A Cron/Mitch Moreland platoon would give them a very productive duo at 1B. They certainly have the salary room to afford both of them, and signing both would mean having a dangerous veteran bat off the bench every night. It seems to me that signing both are moves that Stearns can and should make sooner rather than later. Not only would it fix one glaring hole in the lineup, it would help reassure Brewer fans that they are serious about building a contender for 2020. I think he can be a little more patient on the pitching side, and kind of let the market come to him a bit, but this roster needs some bats.
  4. Suddenly the Brewers have gone from a predominantly LH lineup to basically Yelich and when he plays, Gamel. Unfortunately, the list of FA corner infielders isn't loaded with left handed bats either. Thames is probably the best name out there and now that Moose has gone elsewhere, he's got more leverage. Stearns needs to admit not picking up his option was an error, and get him back even if the price isn't what he hoped it would be. Now about Scooter. After two outstanding offensive years, he had a severe injury in spring training that limited him to just 133 AB's in 2019 and he struggled in those. Not Travis Shaw bad by any means, but not close to his 2017-18 form. The knock on Scooter is that he's primarily just a 2B, and he's only played 10 games at 3B in his career. Well that's more than Shaw had played at 2B and the way the Brewers move their infielders around, it's not like he'd be lining up there every play. I get that his arm isn't that strong, but heck the Cardinals played Carpenter at 3B a lot and he can barely get it to first base. At 29 years old (he'll be 30 in May) and presumably fully healthy, is there a better bounce back candidate out there?
  5. If Braun goes to 1B, Brewers should grab either Castellanos or Ozuna shouldn't they? MLBTR projects Ozuna at 3 for $45. That seems low, but he does cost a draft pick and might just be the value Stearns is counting on. Both come with the bonus of being plucked from divisional rivals.
  6. He might get 600 AB's this year. Somebody has to.
  7. I didn't read the entire thread, but I'm guessing there's not one that included unloading 75% of the roster that produced the first back to back playoff appearances in over 35 years.
  8. Brewer nation: This is my Crew??????
  9. So they are cutting payroll then, right?? Cutting payroll, is cutting payroll. Instead in Yelich's prime you should be increasing it substantially. Payroll is fluid every year, it isn't linear. You don't automatically just increase payroll every year. That's just spending for the sake of spending. You spend when the right deals present itself like with Moose and Grandal last year and manage your resources wisely so that you can afford to make those deals when you need to. What if no right deals present themselves? They can't depend on luck every year. Sometimes you have to make your luck. The Brewers drew 1.1 million more fans than the Reds did last year. Shrinking payroll is an insult to the fans.
  10. There's not only room for a big time pitcher, there's room for Rendon too. If they signed Rendon and Wheeler, they could fill in the rest of the roster with castoffs and reclamation projects. I sure hope Stearns is in serious negotiations with at least two top end FA and we'll hear a big signing announced within the next 10 days. Gotta wonder what's going through the mind of someone like Yelich right now. Practically the entire 2019 roster is gone.
  11. If you're a GM who's under pressure to win in the next couple years, you don't think twice about giving an extra year or two because you'll be gone if the team doesn't make the playoffs and if you do win, you buy yourself job security to live with a bad back end of a deal
  12. Hey the market has clearly changed. The days of waiting around for a huge bargain might be gone. Losing Moose, Grandal and Thames in one offseason? That's a ton of production gone. Brewers might be a sinking ship unless Attanasio decides to reward his loyal fan base with a Rendon.
  13. The poll to watch is the one on Tuesday night. I find it likely the Badgers are ahead of PSU at that point. After the upcoming game Saturday, who knows. Considering the teams PSU lost to (at MN, at OSU) & the rankings of those teams at the time against possibly 3 Badgers loses and who those would be against & where, I could see PSU ranked higher. I could also see the Badgers remaining ahead if Saturdays game is the closest the Buckeyes have all season.. We will see how it plays out.. They look more at your quality wins than they penalize a loss to an inferior team Georgia lost to a South Carolina team that might be worse than Illinois. Penn State's only two wins vs. top 25 teams were teams Wisconsin also beat, Iowa and Michigan. In addition to Iowa and Michigan, Wisconsin has a win over a Minnesota team that Penn State lost to. If the Badgers lose to Ohio State again, that should be judged as basically as one loss, not two. After all, Wisconsin earned the right to play them a second time. The assumption is that Penn State would lose again too.
  14. Baltimore will want premium prospects for Mancini.
  15. If you watched him play RF for the Cubs and I watched a lot of their games, he wasn't great but he wasn't a liability either.
  16. Both Shaw and Lamb are worth minor league deals. As long as they don't commit close to $5 million to Shaw which would force them to give him substantial opportunities to see if he's back. I really liked Lamb a few years ago, but then again, I liked Shaw too. Now? Eh. Thing is, with the way defenses are positioned, no type of hitter is more affected than LH pull hitters like Shaw and Lamb. I think it gets in their heads.
  17. Great bat but for it to work, they'd have to feel comfortable with either him or Braun as the everyday first baseman. It's not that easy of a transition. I think it would be more likely that they'd move Braun to 1B to open up an OF spot for Castellanos, who was not a liability in the Cub outfield. He's fine playing corner OF in a smaller park.
  18. If they go into next season with Shaw penciled in to start anywhere, they aren't serious about contending. Yeah he could rebound, but let him rebound somewhere else. Serious contenders don't go into a season relying on .157 hitters to carry the load. There's plenty of other options for 3B that won't cost a ton. They might not have Shaw's ceiling, but their floors are much, much higher.
  19. Makes tons of sense if you can get him for something like 2/$14 mil with an option. Could be replacement for Braun for a year or two after Braun leaves/retires assuming he produces around .800 OPS level as semi regular. He made $3.5 million on a one year deal with Rays.
  20. Let's not panic that they haven't replaced Grandal, Moustakas or Thames and desperately could use a bona fide top half of the rotation starter, not to mention they have about 150-200 relief innings to replace. They have even more salary wiggle room. If all 3 of Rendon, Donaldson and Moustakas sign elsewhere, Wheeler ends up in Minnesota or Cincinnati and Narvaez gets traded somewhere else, then it's full blown panic time and we're looking at what the Brewers can pick up that they will be able to flip at the deadline, because contending will be far fetched.
  21. I know that everyone hates to see Grisham go, but let's not overlook what Tyrone Taylor did the 2nd half of the year for San Antonio. After a very sluggish first half, he went on a tear, not dissimilar to the breakout Grisham experienced. Post All Star game, Taylor posted a nifty .331/.398/.556, and topped that off by going 4 for 10 in his first taste in the major leagues in the middle of a pennant race. When Stearns says he's happy with the OF depth, it's clear to me that Taylor's late season surge is one reason why. Like Grisham, he can play all 3 OF positions, giving the Brewers two OF backups that can do that, one a LH hitter and one a RH hitter. Furthermore, over the full year, Taylor ripped LH pitching in AAA to the tune of .311/.362/.575.
  22. 77 K's in 83 2/3 innings doesn't say can't miss bats to me. That's a ton of innings (mostly quality) to replace. He had rough outings, usually after being used a lot but he's been pretty darn reliable and a big contributor to two playoff teams. I can't say I'm shocked but I am surprised. They seem to be pinching every possible penny. I'm hoping that's for a reason namely to sign one big bat and one top starter. I'll be very disappointed if it's just to churn their roster with similar type quality.
  23. You don't win by having no black holes in your lineup. You win with having stars in your lineup. The Brewer focus needs to be on bringing in an impact bat and a number 2 starting pitcher. As for what Villar brings, Starlin Castro is a much better player and he's available too. Villar ended up at 2B because he failed miserably at SS and 3B. Castro has ability to play 3B and his K rate is much lower than Villar's
  24. Would you keep Shaw? He was much worse.
  25. Is it possible that they could be cutting payroll and thats it? They drew almost 3 million last year. I'd like them to sign either of these two combinations: Wheeler and Moustakas or Rendon and Lyles.
