  1. Fans are being more selective. Part of the problem is the lineups that Murphy is putting out there in particular on weekday afternoon games. For instance, I considered going to the series finale vs. the Astros. When it was clear the pitching matchup was Priester vs. Valdez, and the Brewers had already won the series, I figured, correctly, that Murphy would not be putting his A lineup on the field. He had done the same thing in the series finale in Chicago the week before, another game I had considered attending. With the roster as it is, they are not competitive when they don't have their A lineup on the field. Did I miss something? Didn't Bauers have 2 huge hits against lefty pitching in the last week? Yet despite having the hottest bat on the team and being one of the few slug threats on the team, he wasn't in there vs. the lefty on Wednesday. Fans that follow the team daily have watched a lot of really bad clunkers already this year and even though the record is respectable, it's miserable to go to the trouble of shelling out a lot of money, taking the time to travel to the game and end up watching 9 innings of non-competitive baseball.
  2. What do you mean 19 innings? He's logged 118 career innings with a 5.84 ERA. His WHIP as a Brewer is higher than his career WHIP
  3. They've been without their 2, 3, and 4 starters practically the entire season, and they are one game under .500. Not many teams could survive that and while they haven't flourished, they certainly have not played their way out of playoff contention. It could be argued that Priester and Patrick have lower ceilings this year than the 2 AAA aces, Henderson and Misiorowski have and that switching out those two could improve their chances this year. At the very least they have the plenty of ammunition to deal for help on the left side of the infield in July. Offensively the guy I though going into this season that the key guy was Mitchell, and so far the results have been disappointing and now he's hurt again. Still when he comes back, you have to keep putting him in the lineup. If he's still flailing in July, maybe you look for help on the market there. I never thought Dunn was the answer at 3B. He showed nothing last year. Third base is a hole on lots of teams including the Cubs. That recent slump Chiorio was in for about 10 days, was a bit of a reality check, but equally encouraging is as fast as he got into it, he appears to be out of it and when he's right, he's a star in this league. Bullpen issues have been in part due to Murphy's quick hooks. He seems to get the heebiejeebies the moment the opposition reaches the 3rd time through. As for closer spot, I would consider using Koenig in that spot
  4. I was wondering if I was the only one. I watched all the starts of Patrick and Priester, and while they were decent, the most impressive start by these young starters was Henderson's and it wasn't close. Sure enough, the day after Henderson handcuffed a good offense, Priester was very shaky against a Giant team whose offense is mediocre at best. That game started this team on a slide where they've lost considerable ground in the division. It only made matters worse when Patrick, who has been the clear number 2 of that group, gets pulled so early despite allowing just one run.
  5. There's still a week left in April. He's hit some balls hard that ended as outs. The time he came up in Denver with the bases loaded and hit about a 110 mph smash right at the 3rd baseman, Those will even out over time
  6. It's about playing time. Michael Busch was a rookie last year for the Cubs at age 26. He spent two full seasons at AA and two full seasons at AAA and he was exceptional. Hoskins is entrenched at first base until at least July. Martinez has only played 16 games at AAA. It's already a given that he's a late bloomer. But there's no reason to rush him. Late bloomers can't just be solid in the minors, they have to be exceptional to earn trust that they can handle a middle of the order spot in a major league batting order. Martinez has a chance to be penciled in as an everyday first baseman in 2026, but he's not over every hurdle. If Bauers played everyday in AAA, he'd probably be one of the league leaders in HR and RBI.
  7. I thought Patrick was in complete command. When he needed to get a strike he got one and for the most part he stayed out of the middle of the zone and moved it around. He kept the Royals off balance, by backing them off the plate. His fastball, when it's accompanied by an effective cutter is plenty good enough to get major league hitters out, but he can't miss too often in the middle of the plate. He kept hitters from looking in one spot. That's the key for all but the guys with the huge power stuff. He had 2 unintentional walks in basically 5 innings. That's fine
  8. Memo to Murph: I don't care what the score is and how mad the Yankee fans will get, when first base is open and Judge comes up you walk him. Yesterday was an embarrassment.
  9. Collins is filling the Perkins roster spot and that's consistent with how the team has operated in recent years with optionable players that aren't part of their core. Other than at the end of blowouts, I don't think we'll see him carve out a role because he'll be sitting and watching.
  10. I don't see Capra as a no-brainer. He had two great weeks early in spring training but he's also going to be 29 in July. There's a real possibility it was just a hot streak that any solid AAA player can have in spring training. Dunn might be on firmer ground because he's a left handed bat.
  11. I think Murphy would love to keep both Canha and Bauers. I'm guessing if they can't trade Capra, they'll DFA him and hope he clears waivers.
  12. The fact is the guy he is competing with is Jake Bauers. And Bauers simply is a better player, despite the negativity he gets on this board. Bauers is better defensively, both at 1B and in the outfield. Bauers swings and misses a lot a fact that actually that helps him getting deeper in counts and had a very decent walk rate to go along elite power swing. When he connects it is almost always a no doubter and he's shown he can occasionally take elite pitching deep. If Bauers ever could add some doubles and singles to his game without losing power, he'd be a starting caliber 1B but for now at least he has an edge on Black. I saw Black play in Wrigley against the Cubs early last season. He just didn't look like a hitter the opposition had any fear of. Maybe more AB's and some adjustments could help Black
  13. This is the just the type of guy the Brewers pick up and he goes out and wins 10 games. At worst he can eat innings.
  14. LA needs to clear some roster spots for guys they have agreed to terms on but don't have roster space for. They could eat some salary by releasing Chris Taylor, or find a team to take Outman in a trade. They also could deal 35 year old shortstop Miguel Rojas. Rojas has always been a solid if unspectacular defender and he's coming off one of the best offensive seasons of his career. He has one year left on his contract at a modest $5 million. He's no Willy Adames nor is he a guy you want starting 150+ games but he's a proven veteran that could fill a need for the Brewers,
  15. If you combine Hoskins and Bauers, who handled the vast majority of work at 1B, combined hit 38 HR and drove in 125 runs. They can live with that. The real questions on offense for this team are what can Garrett Mitchell do in a full injury free year, and can Joey Ortiz avoid the slumps that plagued him in 2024 and put up improved overall numbers. To me those two are the big keys to the 2025 offense along with Yelich's health of course and whether Chourio will attain superstar status this season or will it take another year or two. Hoskins is a contributor to be sure, and they need him to be at least what he was last year.
  16. One thing that puzzled me with Black is that when he did come up, they batted him 3rd for more than half his plate appearances. What were they thinking? That seemed ludicrous. If they're going to give him any extended role as DH/1B, it's got to be at or near the bottom of the order until he shows he can handle major league pitching. I've never thought of him as a guy with a high ceiling but maybe he can produce enough to be a productive hitter. But if you asked me who I'd prefer in that role, Black or bringing back Bauers, I'd take Bauers in a heartbeat.
  17. The Brewers have never used up their entire budget this early. Maybe all they can do is "bargain hunt" but last year they found some significant bargains. For instance, I'd be totally on board if they picked up a guy like Donovan Solano who's price will be more based on his advanced age than his production. That guy has shown no sign of dropping off as a hitter and he can play some 3B, 1B, and DH.
  18. Perkins slugged .332 last year and Frelick slugged .335. As good as they are defensively, they can really only afford having one of those two in the lineup with no Adames in the middle of it. They have to add slug somewhere. Adding a Grichuk, gives them 6 players for 4 spots, assuming Frelick stays in the OF. That's not a problem. It's a strength. It also doesn't preclude them from finding a bat to cover 3rd if a good option is available. There's also nothing stopping them from dealing Perkins perhaps even in a deal to get a 3B. They had a similar logjam last winter and dealt Taylor.
  19. I was 11 years old in 1964 and saw Carty play several times that year and in 65. Great hitter. The lineup they had in 65 with Aaron, Matthews, Carty, Felipe Alou, Joe Torre, Mack Jones, Gene Oliver and Denis Menke should have won the NL, but GM John McHale who was part of the ownership group, didn't do nearly enough to fortify a pitching staff that was good at the top with Tony Cloninger, Wade Blasingame and Ken Johnson but needed reinforcements down the stretch to hold off the pitching rich Dodgers. The last thing McHale and Brave owners wanted was for that team to make the World Series and shine the light on Milwaukee when the team was packed and ready to move to Atlanta
  20. I think the Brewers are serious about moving Frelick to 3B. With Yelich return and Mitchell healthy, they'll want all 3 in lineup vs. RHP. They could have interest in Urshela to see considerable time at 3B too as a guy in their price range with some value.
  21. But they could have added veterans to take AB's from the young hitters that are struggling. They did that last year when they added Canha, Santana and gave Taylor additional starts. It's not uncommon for young hitters to struggle in the heat of a race. Replacing Monasterio on the roster with a quality veteran would allow Murphy to sit Ortiz and Turang more as both have tailed off considerably. With Yelich out, they certainly have room to add a veteran OF to the mix who's better than Bauers.
  22. I certainly don't see Montas as an upgrade over Junis much less his being worth giving up on Wiemer to a division rival no less. Wiemer is still young enough to explode into an offensive force. I get he might be helped by a change of scenery but not in the division.
  23. A rumor was spread at the time that Lezcano acted oddly when he became mired in the worst slump of his career in 1980. I won't get into the details because that was a long time ago and I'm not sure I recall all the details. Let's just say the coaches became frustrated with him. He was a big fan favorite and a great player and suddenly it all went away. He was in a huge slump when a broken hand ended his season in 1980. He ended up in the Simmons/Vukovich deal.
  24. The article doesn't even mention Joey Ortiz. The gap between him and Monasterio is enormous. Ortiz and Chourio are emerging stars with Ortiz further along. When Ortiz went down, the offense suffered. He needs time off occasionally too, but his bat needs to be in the lineup.
  25. I'm in agreement with all who think the time to pinch hit for Chourio is over for good. Also the time for using Payamps in high leverage situations should be on hold. What the heck's wrong with Hudson? He's thrown 2 innings in the last 8 days?
