  1. The Brewers could likely go out and sign Dozier on a one year deal for slightly less than what Schoop would get in arbitration. Dozier should be looking to re-establish his value on a one year deal. Now both guys are coming off really down years, but Dozier has much better on base skills (70 walks despite hitting just .215) and won a gold glove in 2017. I think some progression to the mean of his career numbers can be expected.
  2. I'd take flyer on Dozier bouncing on a one year deal.
  3. Hader has a changeup. He used it very sparingly not because it's that bad a pitch, but because he didn't need it one time through an order. But he did use it a few times.
  4. The Brewers best prospect is a 2B who'll likely be ready to play at some point in 2019. I don't see them signing any of the guys who'll command multiple year deals. That eliminates a guy like LeMahieu. A guy like Dozier who's looking to re-establish some value and might take one year make more sense. Maybe because of age they could get a Lowrie or a Murphy for one year too.
  5. I think Woodruff ends up as a premier reliever. His velocity out of the pen was significantly higher than when he started, and he's really a 2 pitch pitcher. Now Burnes has 4 pitches. He's said once he's back starting, he'll use his changeup which he's kept under wraps as a reliever. Guerra too figures in the bullpen picture for 2019. The rotation on opening day could look like: Chacin Burnes Miley Davies Nelson Peralta is the wild card if Miley isn't re-signed or Nelson can't come back. I think odds are very high Anderson is dealt. I don't sense they are ready to give up on Davies however. Pen on opening day: Knebel, Hader, Woodruff, Jeffress, Guerra, Jennings, Williams
  6. I think it's pretty likely that both Schoop and Moustakas will be gone. I could see them adding a Harrison or Dozier if they want coverage in case they feel Hiura needs a bit more time. Either of those guys could have value at next year's deadline.
  7. There were times last year (2017) when Arcia was the best bat in the lineup. We waited all season for that guy to appear. Timing is everything. His talent is undeniable. A lot has been said about his mechanics. It's partially that but what I've seen since his return from the minors is a level of maturity he was lacking earlier. When his focus matches his talent, he's a star and the team reaps the benefits.
  8. Predictably, it took Michigan two plays to get the ball back out to where Wisconsin punted from. Chryst is coaching like he's in a fog. When the coach doesn't want to compete, why should the players?
  9. If you saw him in Arizona last spring, and you didn't know who he was, you'd be convinced he was a regular in the major league lineup. He's poised and refined as a hitter.
  10. Right now the Brewer talent stacks up with any in the NL. Yeah the Dodger lineup is scary. But with Arcia back to the hitter he was in 2017, the Brewer lineup is just as scary. The Brewer lineup vs. LHP is probably a step below with Kiki Hernandez over Perez, but against RHP, the Brewers stack up with anyone. If Perez can get hot for a series, even that can be evened out. Both benches are formidable.
  11. The 1981 and 82 seasons were the only years when WTMJ was not the flagship station for the Brewers. Bud Selig admitted to me on the phone in 1982 that switching from the much more powerful signal of TMJ to ISN was a flat out mistake after I explained to him how difficult it was to follow the Brewers, particularly after sundown, from a mere 70 miles away in Northern suburbs of Chicago. Merle Harmon left the Brewer booth after the 79 season I believe, and was replaced by Chicagoan Lorn Brown, who had done White Sox games previously. Brown was notoriously bad for getting excited about what turned out to be long fly balls. Brown was there in 1980 and 81. In 1982, he was replaced by Dwayne Mosely, who was just plain awful. He was way too wordy in his descriptions. He lasted 2 seasons, and was replaced by Pat Hughes in 1984.
  12. Stearns has to be careful in just doing fire sales to clear roster space. Zach Davies is not a guy I throw into the clearance sale bin for minor league depth. He'll be 26 and he's a proven successful major league starter. Chase Anderson might get you a bit more than low level prospects and his rotation spot can/will be filled by one of the young guys. It might even be a good time to sell high on Chacin.
  13. Wouldn't surprise me if Counsell held intersquad games today and Wednesday for dual purpose of letting hitters see live pitching, and determining his pitching situation.
  14. Davies was vintage Davies in September save one inning were every bleeder fell in.
  15. Woodruff starting. Figure he goes at least 3 innings. He's been throwing as well as anyone. I'd back him up with Guerra or Burnes.
  16. I think that's a sentiment shared by many Brewer fans. Whatever happens against Colorado, nothing can take away from celebrating a division title at Wrigley Field.
  17. Thames struggled in the PH role the last month, but the hits he did get were big and I like his ability to get a big fly late over Granderson. Let's remember it was Thames that walked off Wade Davis in early August.
  18. Just so you sell your tickets to a Brewer fan and not, assuming they make it, a Cub fan.
  19. Starters (4): Chacin, Davies, Gonzalez, Miley Pen (8): Jeffress, Soria, Knebel, Hader, Woodruff, Burnes, Cedeno, Guerra Position players (13) Aguilar, Shaw, Arcia, Moustakas, Kratz, Pina, Braun, Cain, Yelich, Perez, Schoop, Santana, Thames The curious case of the disappearance of Chase Anderson the last 10 days continues. His affinity for giving up the long ball is just too hard to ignore against the power he'd be facing. The recent work out of the pen of Woodruff and Guerra has been too good to ignore and pushes out Jennings. Broxton is a nice luxury to have but just misses out.
  20. If he can duplicate Ryu's career with the Dodgers that would be a nice addition. Granted Ryu came from KBO not the JPL, but getting a rotation ready starter in his prime? I say go for it.
  21. Yeah, he's terrible. 47 HR, and 121 RBI and 97 runs scored? Most HR in baseball since 2015 All Star break. Just awful. You guys are unreal. I just threw that out there to get a reaction and sure enough. That's not to say I don't think Davis is deserving to be in the top 10 regardless of WAR in his case. I do. If he was in NY or Boston he would be.
  22. My picks: AL MVP: Khris Davis NL MVP: Christian Yelich
  23. No season is a guaranteed playoff spot, but the Brewers are pretty well situated for the next year or two to compete. Their core returns in tact. Burnes, Peralta, and Woodruff are all quality arms to fill out the rotation. They go into next spring with a rotation that's 8 or 9 deep at least not counting possibly retaining Miley. Arcia should bounce back. Davies is another obvious bounce back candidate. Who knows about Nelson? I fully expect Braun to be able to repeat his 2018 season. Cain certainly doesn't look like he's ready to fall off a cliff.
  24. The Cubs face Trevor Williams tonight. He's been among the best starting pitchers in baseball in the second half of the season, and is absolutely not a pushover. Lester is pitching for the Cubs. I am expecting a low-scoring game. It going to be a matter of if and when the Pirates can get to that overripe bullpen. I totally and completely expect a Pirates win this evening. The Cardinals are one game out of a Wild Card game, so they have no choice but to put together good showing this weekend, and hope the Dodgers continue to lose. I don't think the Rockies are going to fall off. They lucked out with getting hot combined with playing teams that have thrown in the towel this year. Lester's faced the Pirates 4 times this year with mixed results. Two of the starts he was stellar and didn't allow a run. The other two, were just the opposite, having allowed 4 runs in each. Williams has faced the Cubs twice, allowing just one run in each of those starts. I like the Pirates are taking their role seriously, thought it's somewhat disturbing that they've essentially shut down the guys who are FA to be.
  25. I'm partial to the 79 team that won 95 games. Top to bottom, that was the best everyday lineup and unlike this year's team which made significant additions at the deadline, every key contributor was there all season.
