  1. Stearns seems to have pretty good rapport with Rick Hahn. Hopefully the price was similar to what he paid for Swarzack last year.
  2. Exactly. Is everyone forgetting last year? Brewers tried to hang in the race post Nelson injury with a rotation of Anderson, Davies, Woodruff, and Suter which was basically a bullpen day, and Wilkerson. Jeffress was even used as a starter one game. Woodruff, after a promising start, faltered in his last 3 or 4 starts. Hey Woodruff and Peralta may indeed have great futures, but counting on them in the heat of a race when there are affordable veterans makes no sense.
  3. I like Kirby Yates a lot. Maybe Ortiz and Santana would make some sense for him since he's controlled for a couple more seasons but I'm not all that interested in Ross, and definitely not Ellis.
  4. A lot of Counsell's lost challenges are because he goes by the "use em if you got em". I don't think he loses them early in games all that often, but if he still has one in his pocket later on, he'll take shots even when it's not all that clear.
  5. I have to assume his name is coming up more and more in trade talks as scouts from all over are seeing him during this hot streak. He may not have same value as Hiura, but he's closing the gap. Fast.
  6. I don't think this franchise which has reached the postseason twice in 36 seasons can surrender any opportunities by not adding pieces that are available because there is a cost involved.
  7. Archer's value as a trade chip is based on what has always been considered a team friendly contract. But is it really? He's an about to turn 30 year old pitcher who hasn't posted an ERA under 4 since 2015. He's owed a not insignificant $7.6 million for 2019. It goes up to $9 million for 2020, and $11 million for 2021, both team options. Because of that contract, Tampa Bay is looking for much more in return than his modest production would normally command. If I'm the Brewers, I'd rather take on a bigger contract if it means having to give up less back. Duffy is the same age as Archer and owed roughly $15 million per year through 2021 (no options), so there's definitely more risk taking on his deal. But I'd argue he's been better than Archer in the last 3 seasons, and his deal isn't prohibitive and the added risk might mean one less prospect back to the Royals.
  8. Duffy and Merrifield for that package in a heart beat.
  9. We've been told "the future is bright" for decades. What's different now?
  10. You can't really compare Baez, who was one of the top prospects in the game from day one to Santana, who was traded away by two organizations.
  11. Stearns couldn't find a buyer for Santana after he posted an .875 OPS last year. He's arby eligible this winter too. His value is pretty low and since there's nowhere to play him with Thames in the OF, it's not going to get any higher.
  12. The guy gives up a ton of HR, and hasn't shown any signs he's a future ace. I'd pass at that price.
  13. Welcome aboard Bulldogboy. His inability to land Machado was a major failure that can't be defended, especially when they were facing the Dodgers 7 times in 2 weeks coming out of the break.
  14. I know catching can be tough on the body, but Salvador Perez just turned 28! Sure, but his OBP just turned .259 .... he's a home run, low OBP guy, and now he's not even slugging .400 - I'm absolutely not buying without a significant paydown. Hey, Perez is worth checking on at this point as his value is down. He had a terrible month of June but he slugged .441 in April, .482 in May, and .491 so far in July. He's averaged 23 HR in the past 3 seasons and he's on pace for that or more this year. As for Duffy, I still think he'd be the ace on this Brewer staff, is under fairly reasonable control through 2021, and is still under 30. He's got 8 straight starts of at least 6 innings, with 6 of those 8 allowing one run or less. In that time, he ERA has gone from 5.81 to 4.40.
  15. I respect your player value calculations, but Houser + Supak is IMO too much for a rental. Unless someone is elite (i.e. Machado), I don't trade more than one SP prospect for a rental. I even struggle with giving up one SP prospect for a rental. That being said, I've wanted Cabrera for a while and am a big fan of acquiring him. Their choice of Houser/Supak plus Villar is where I start, maybe I add Segovia if they balk. Maybe I'll throw in a 2nd SP prospect if they include a lower-level prospect who doesn't need to be protected for a couple of years. Supak/Villar and a lottery ticket was about what I was thinking.
  16. I have a wild theory about Arcia's offensive struggles this year. I'm thinking he's a guy that tries to emulate other guys and he's tried at times this year to emulate Cain who isn't necessarily a great guy for him to copy. I don't have any inside info, but he was fine last year before Cain, and he's been good so far at AAA when he's not watching Cain hit 5 times a night.
  17. I think the Mets would be willing to take Villar but it would be doing the Brewers a favor by taking his remaining salary off the books, so that might even mean a slightly higher level prospect. Time is of the essence so DS needs to get it done sooner rather than later.
  18. IF that's true, no wonder DS didn't get him...Nothing like lowballing them David. The Brewers' system is much more than three prospects deep. And 2 1/2 months of play does not define a prospect's value. Both Phillips and Ortiz were Top 100 guys as recently as last season. Yeah but....if the tables were turned, Brewer fans would be up in arms getting two guys who were performing at mediocre levels this season for one of the best players in the game. In fact, Ortiz didn't put up very good numbers last year either. It wasn't close to the Dodgers offer which I though wasn't all that strong either.
  19. I don't......would have been out easily It was a ground ball for goodness sake. The CF wasn't near the ball when Pina who was already slowing down was hitting 3rd. I could have scored on that. Pina going full bore from the get go scores standing.
  20. What catchers are good on base guys? They bat down in the order. Perez has power, and is a 4 time Gold Glover and 6 time All Star.
  21. Sounds like Duffy would fit right in. Lay an egg 30% of the time seems in line with our guys. No interest in Merrifield at all. Kershaw lays eggs. Duffy, when he's right, and he has been lately more often than not, performs like an ace, and that's exactly what gets you through short series. How many guys go through 6 innings against Houston's lineup unscathed? Duffy did just that in June. He's also on a reasonable deal through 2021. Merrifield is an above average player at a position the Brewers are below average, and it'll take Hiura as a centerpiece to get a haul.
  22. Duffy has been nothing short of brilliant in 7 of his last 10 starts. Time to revisit a Duffy/Merrifield deal? Add Perez as a buy-low guy?
  23. That echos my thoughts as well. That might be the plan. In fact with Machado gone, the only significant impact moves are to acquire an ace, assuming Hiura can be key piece, and then upgrading with a 2-3 year better than average starter at a position of need. Gives them a shot at having a starter to win a Wild Card play in game this year and upgrades the team for next 2-3 years. One note, Danny Duffy has been on a real nice run. He's allowed no runs in 3 of his last 5 starts, and 4 of his last 7, and one run in another. Is he a genuine Ace? Maybe not, but since May 24, he's been terrific. Duffy/Merrifield as a combo?
