  1. Frankly I don't believe in "windows". Opportunities present themselves periodically and if you're prepared to take advantage like this year, you do it. It changes year to year if not month to month, not window to window. There's just too many variables that there's no control over. Balance is the key. Don't look too far ahead. Focus on developing as many players as possible to be assets down the road either as part of your team or trade pieces.
  2. The opening day roster often comes down to who has options and who doesn't. The guys with options are more likely to start in AAA but will be first in line in case of injury.or ineffectveness.
  3. I think Drake was likely to be gone before we made a single move for a reliever. It's time it's made official now.
  4. My guess is a little more than that. He's a slight upgrade over Jared Hughes. He was awful for the White Sox in 2016 but rebounded well in 2017 and other than that season, he's been good since 2012. His name did come up in a thread somewhere when all the relievers had been getting gobbled up for big bucks. Rosenthal confirmed that it's 2/$5M I edited the orginal post. Hughes got $4.5 million over 2 from the Reds, so Albers got slightly more. Solid move at that price.
  5. Basically he signed for the same deal as Hughes got from the Reds. He was awful for the White Sox in 2016 but rebounded well in 2017 and other than that season, he's been good since 2012. His name did come up in a thread somewhere when all the relievers had been getting gobbled up for big bucks.
  6. The big difference between 3B and middle infield is the ball comes on you a heck of a lot quicker, and you also need to be able to charge bunts and make off balance throws. My guess is Braun just didn't have the quick hands. Yeah he missed throws too, but a lot of that was adjusting to the major leagues. Braun's a great athlete, and has never gotten too big to play middle infield. A lot of time these days, the 2B lines up in the outfield anyway. That would be a heck of a lineup with him at 2B.
  7. It's all speculation that he makes the Brewers much better in the pen this year than he does in the rotation. Nobody knows the answer to that question so it's certainly not unanimous. It's a case where they know what they have with him in the pen and they are being risk averse in a year they see themselves as serious contenders. It's comparable to year 2 of Chris Sale. In year one (2010), the White Sox won 88 games. Going into 2011, they had what they thought was a contending rotation. But John Danks regressed. and nobody stepped up and they went 79-83. They had nothing to lose the next year so Sale became a starter. If there's serious regression from guys like Anderson or Davies or anyone they are counting on to start, it might prove to be a mistake not to have him take a shot. Of course if they were going to do that, they would have needed to add more talent to their pen which they haven't done so it appears the decision was made months ago.
  8. Jeff Kent comp perhaps? With all the shifting, who knows? Arcia would move all over.
  9. He came out after he hurt it and pitched another inning. I think 9 months after surgery is about right.
  10. keon broxton entered the 2017 season with one minor league option remaining. he was optioned in 2017 to colorado springs, but his stay there was brief (only ten days), which preserved his remaining minor league option for 2018. Great catch, here is Adam McCalvy’s Tweet on the subject. My mistake. Great news that he does in fact have an option. Stash him in AAA, hope he puts up monster numbers and generates some trade interest that's not there now apparently.
  11. While I like the idea of a lineup with Santana, Cain and Yelich, I'd like a defensive outfield of Yelich, Cain and Phillips even more. Santana was the defensive weak link in the OF. Cain and Yelich are ticketed for CF and LF. Braun and Perez are better RF than Santana. Phillips can be outstanding. Start the year with a soft platoon in RF with Phillips and Braun. If Phillips doesn't hit enough, fall back to Braun there getting most of the starts. Until then, get Braun a start or two per week at 1B to get his bat in the lineup during the times that Thames is cold. Get a deal done with Indians for a starter using Santana. Then let's be done with it. Maybe sign Walker for some infield punch too. That would be my plan.
  12. Santana / Woodruff / Ortiz + a flyer Do they say no? Imho that’s the package we use to get our starter. DS I’m sure is trying to do Phillips instead. I'd take a shot at a Salazar and hold on to Phillips. Santana's such a defensive liability that he negates the defensive upgrades in CF and LF. An of of Yelich, Cain and Phillips would help our pitchers immensely.
  13. Probably not throwing his splitter as much, or at least I hope not. Not only that but a lot of guys swing early in counts in Latin baseball.
  14. Hey if Ryan Zimmerman can go from a .642 OPS to a .930 at similar age then it's not too much of a stretch for Braun to rebound to something around .875. He is only a season removed from a .903 OPS.
  15. My gut says no way. This is a non-issue, is he actually better than any of our already in house options? Not worth it. Really? Corbin is a proven middle of the rotation starter in his prime who wouldn't come with a long term commitment or need a huge package to get. He'd be no worse than their #3 starter. He eats innings, struck out more than 8 guys per 9 innings playing in same division as the Dodgers and Rockies.
  16. If the season started today, assuming they keep 12 pitchers here's my breakdown of the 13 position players: Locks (8): Cain, Yelich, Santana, Braun, Shaw, Arcia, Pina, Thames Near locks (2): Vogt, Sogard Guys fighting for 3 remaining spots (5): Perez, Villar, Phillips, Broxton, Aguilar Trade possibles (5): Broxton, Santana, Perez, Villar, Aguilar, Thames Phillips has options. Broxton does not. Opportunity for Phillips to play everyday at AAA and options might be deciding factor. Only one of two make team out of Arizona. I give Perez the edge over Villar for versatility and ability to hit LH pitching and play all 3 OF spots. Both could make the team only if Aguilar does not.
  17. They can move Braun to 1B part of the time so then Aguilar becomes expendable. What do you do with Aguilar? See if you can get a reliever or some low level lottery pick type prospects for him or does he end up with the same fate as Gennett last year? Cut at the end of camp and immediately claimed? Seems like he'd be a nice fit in Colorado.
  18. Where's the $15M number coming from? I see him at $7.5M. I don't want him either way though. He signed for $15 million to avoid arbitration. He fits perfectly in Milwaukee. If he had a good year, give him a QO and get a draft pick. Santana would be too much but it's not like the Brewers don't have spare parts they could deal. Broxton, Villar, even Suter to name a few.
  19. Baseball-Reference says Teheran is owed $8 this year, $11 million in 2019, and there's a team option for 2020 for $12 million. That's 3 years according to my math at a very reasonable number at that. Well worth Santana.
  20. I think you are way underrating Teheran. The new park in Atlanta is a launching pad.. You need to evaluate his numbers much like you would for a Colorado pitcher. Teheran's road ERA was 3.14 last year. According to B-R he comes with 3 years of control (2 and an option), but he'll hit FA at 30 and chances are Brewers will extend him QO and get a draft pick if he signs elsewhere. Santana straight up for Teheran? In a heartbeat. I'd even throw in Villar or Broxton and a middlng prospect.
  21. Your bigger concern is if we deal Santana our rh power is zapped the moment Braun goes down, and yet you talk about cutting Perez who hit lefties at a .316/.342/.447 clip last year? I'd cut Villar who didn't hit a lick vs. lefties last year. Perez is better defensively in OF, and IF than Villar. Opportunities will be down for him in 2018, but barring a deal for a 2B, a 2B platoon of Perez/Sogard is far superior to Villar/Sogard. I keep Aguilar too, and trade Thames if the plan is to move Braun to 1B. Aguilar has proven invaluable as late inning PH bat. That's a skill not many possess.
  22. To KC with Villar and Suter for Duffy and Merrifield?
  23. Walker should be next unless Santana lands Duffy and Merrifield.
  24. Winner winner chicken dinner! Missed by one year and 1 million AAV.
