Importance of Defense at 1B -- underrated?
danzig6767 replied to Playing Catch's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I certainly would like to see Braun walk more, it's easily the biggest weakness in his game. With that said, i gotta admit that when runners are on base in close games, i generally would prefer he not get walked unless he swings at complete garbage. He's such a good hitter, i wonder how great his stats would be if he got more counts in his favor? Then again, there have been many times where he K's on a terrible pitch way off the plate and i yell at the TV saying, why the hell are you swinging at that. The next at bat, he hacks at a pitch high and off the plate, such a terrible pitch nobody should be able to make solid contact, yet Braun jacks it into the gap for say a double that scores two runs. Outside of Vlad, i can't remember a player offhand that hits balls harder that are way out of the strike zone. -
I completely agree with the basis of the article With that said, i do think it's very important to have a strong back end of the bullpen if you have a contending team, not just a closer though. Look at the Cardinals, the only reason we aren't behind them right now is their late innings bullpen guys have gagged away so many games. Here is another piece about closers and K-Rod http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=krod/080805&sportCat=mlb

I was just checking boxscores the other day and caught Balfour's name and looked up his numbers, they are silly 31 innings 12 hits 14 walks 49 strikeouts 1.39 ERA 0.80 WHIP .113 BAA Only 12 hits in 31 innings and 49 K's, wow. I remember being very curious and kinda excited when we finally called him up last year. Unfortunately it looked like his nerves got the best of him during his brief call up and i understand why the team felt they couldn't keep using him while in a playoff chase and McClung was a very solid pickup in return. After the trade though, i did wonder if another team in a less pressure situation gave Grant a chance to work out the nerves, if he'd be successful. I didn't envision this though. edit--It does partly go to show how crazy and unpredictable putting together a pen is. We are spending 20 million on Gagne/Riske/Mota/Turnbow this year and a guy like Balfour is nearly free.

Brewer 3B Options For The Rest of The Year
danzig6767 replied to rluzinski's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
The is off topic, but am i the only one who wonders why teams don't play a sizable defensive shift when Counsell bats? Unless i'm blind and have terrible retention ability, it sure seems to me that Craig is a big time pull hitter, even if it generally involves balls not traveling far that he hits. I started noticing it awhile ago and now whenever he bats, i watch where he hits the ball and it doesn't matter if the pitcher throws 99mph, he seems to pull nearly every ball he hits. -
Brewer 3B Options For The Rest of The Year
danzig6767 replied to rluzinski's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I know that how players hit means way more than where they bat in the order, but Ned in his batting order by position just baffles me to no end. Craig is playing thirdbase now, so of course that means he has to bat six in the order and whoever else he replaces, that's where he has to bat. I was almost hoping Prince got suspended for a game just to see if Ned would play Rivera at first and then bat him cleanup because well, whoever plays first has to bat cleanup. -
Ken Griffey, Jr., traded to White Sox
danzig6767 replied to Bruce Ciskie's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I remember quite a few people making mocking comments about Williams early in his tenure and saying he'd be terrible, but he's done a great job since taking over the White Sox. -
Yea well if any team wants to keep quality pitching, they have no choice but to assume some risk. Given the monster cash though that really good pitchers like Haren currently get now and those salaries will only rise, great deal for Arizona. It's only a four year deal, not say six, and they get relatively his prime years. At 12.5 for the last two years, that what Suppan gets to pitch like a 5th starter.

Braun's 3B Defense vs. Gamel's 3B Defense
danzig6767 replied to JJHardy7's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I understand completely why the Brewers would want Gamel to stay in the minors one more season to try and improve on all of his skills. For selfish reasons of next year though, it should would be nice to possibly have a good left handed stick in the lineup added to Prince. One reason for offense struggles this year sure seems to be the right handed dominant lineup. Except for when Branyan was playing a lot and producing, Prince was the only consistently productive left handed batter in the lineup in most games. Then we get in games with a righty pitcher throwing well, it's tough with only Prince around on the left side. -
Maybe some want him gone, but most i see just want Durham to get more starts this season, then the offseason can dictate Weeks fate going forward. As for him finally being productive, i just don't agree that he really has when everything is factored in. Yea his hitting has finally been better than terrible compared to the first three months of sub-.700 OPS numbers. With that said, it's not like he's on some great tear at the plate either and during this better than crap hitting stretch, Weeks has been flat out brutal defensively and had a couple brainfarts running the bases. So given the blowing of at least 4 double plays, other shaky plays with the glove, and baserunning blunders during his better hitting stretch, all those other screw ups negated a lot of any value his finally hitting decent brought to the team. If say a quarterback is finally completing passes at a better percentage and throwing some touchdowns after struggling with that for quite awhile, but during that time is also throwing to many interceptions and fumbled a few times, it negates a lot or most of the good from the increased better percentage and touchdowns. Weeks isn't a DH, other things he does besides hit factor into the overall value he's bringing to the team.

The Dugout Fight (video on Brewers.com)
danzig6767 replied to TooLiveBrew's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Prince shouldn't have done it unless Manny said something that really crossed the line, but my guess is they make up quickly. Playing 162 games together, i'm surprised the cameras don't pick up more heated exchanges among players for all teams. I'm far more concerned with the struggles vs righthanded pitching than an argument that likely will be forgotten by the two come tomorrow. -
8/4/08 Brewers (Parra) at Reds (Arroyo): 6:10 PM CDT
danzig6767 replied to wibadgers23's topic in Archived Game Threads
I have no idea if Ned would have pulled Manny for Stetter anyways vs Bruce, but it's one reason among others i hated the move of sending down Stetter to keep Mota. There are times it sure would be nice to have a second lefty in the pen because Ned can't always just use Shouse, but we kept Mota instead even though Ned has no reason to trust Mota except in garbage situations. -

I want Durham to get more starts from Weeks, but i don't get completely baffled to see Rickie still getting nearly every start. Kendall though has been beyond brutal at the plate for over a month, about a .500 OPS, one weak grounder or shallow fly after another. Yet, Rivera gets maybe 2 starts a month even though it hot as hell all the time. -
How do we get the most from Rickie Weeks?
danzig6767 replied to futurebrewerfather's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Yea he's hitting better, at the same time though, his defense has been a trainwreck. In the last two weeks, he has single handedly blown either four or five double plays by either muffing the grounder or by terrible throws. That also doesn't account for a couple plays where he was lucky grounders he missed weren't called an error or his baserunning blunders. Weeks is a guy i've kept thinking will eventually put it together, but no player on the team frustrates me more than him. No question that Durham has range issues, but i also trust him to no blow simple plays as much either. Plus, with Weeks being miserable this year vs righthanders, i'd rather Ned did a straight platoon the rest of the season. With Weeks hitting .210 with a .313 OBP against righties and his ability to turn should be outs into baserunners and extended innings with his glove, i just have a hard time seeing where the harm is from Durham starting when righties are on the mound. -
Ken Griffey, Jr., traded to White Sox
danzig6767 replied to Bruce Ciskie's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I don't doubt that some players have years where they likely won't be sustained in future seasons, but when i look at the numbers for the White Sox, i see quite a few of their major contributors this year being guys with a history of performing well. They do have two young starters having great years and i'd assume better than Williams would have hoped for, but both guys were top 10 picks with great arms and stuff, they just hadn't put it together prior to this year. It certainly isn't very rare for young pitchers with great arms to need some time before their performance matches their stuff. We'll see in future years if Danks and Floyd are just having an aberration season or if they really are just young arms who needed experience and they will continue being good starters going forward. Plus, the White Sox have a few guys in Swisher and especially Konerko that have struggled. I just fail to see where they are massively playing over their heads -
Manny to Dodgers, Bay to Red Sox, 4 players to Pirates
danzig6767 replied to B2k1121's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
The problem with the trade was is that instead of Manny they could have gotten Bay (obviously) and they went with the guy who can't play defense and is only around for 2 months. Maybe they didn't want to give up all the prospects the Pirates were demanding for Bay, Moss and Hansen came from the Red Sox. -

danzig6767 replied to B2k1121's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I don't see your issue with the trade Jones was a terrible signing, but even with Manny not being as good as in his prime Manny, he's quite a bit better right now than Either and light years better than Pierre. In this trade, the Dodgers didn't give up much and didn't take on a big long term deal, i believe the last two years on the deal involve team options. The NL West is a terrible division and the Dodgers easily could end up now winning it. True they'd have to buck the odds to advance far in the playoffs, but we've seen quite a few instances since the Wild Card was brought in where lesser record teams ended up not only in the World Series, but winning it. As recently as 2006, a very mediocre Cardinals team that won only 83 regular season games ended up winning it all. The first round of the playoffs is only a 5 game series, it's very easy for a better team to lose to a lesser one in such a short series. Then you're one 7 game series from the World Series. In baseball unlike the NBA, it's easier and much more common to see upsets given the nature of the game, just getting in is the biggest key. -

danzig6767 replied to Bruce Ciskie's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
How are they massively playing over their heads? Yea Floyd and Danks are pitching better than Williams would have imagined, but they were the 4th and 9th overall draft picks in their classes, some pitchers take time to put things together. Carlos Quentin is having a huge year, but he put up big numbers in the minors nearly each season. On the flip side i'm sure Williams would have hoped for more from Swisher and Konerko has been absolutely miserable this season. -
But My Big Brother's Wearing a Dress
danzig6767 replied to GenoSeligPrieb's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I'm no fan of Ned Yost, but the Cubs have a better offensive team, a better pitching staff, and they are a better defensive team than the Brewers. The only thing i see the Brewers being better at than the Cubs is hitting home runs. On the season the Cubs lead the NL in runs scored and are second in team ERA to the Dodgers. The Cubs not only lead the NL in batting average, they lead the NL in walks taken. The Cubs pitching staff is not only second in ERA, they are second in WHIP and tied for first in striking out batters. The only reason the Brewers were a single game back before that four game debacle was our great record in one run games. Our lineup is so righthanded heavy with to many low batting average hitters, some of whom also don't walk enough. When the Cubs threw out there three straight power throwing righthanded starters, they exposed the greatest weakness of the Brewers team. It sure did suck watching the Cubs spank us like that, but i don't doubt at all that they are a better team, even if Ned isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. -
Attanasio is running a multi-million dollar business with high levels of expenses, no owner is going to just give away many expensive tickets because the home fans are pawning them off. There is no solution to this besides less fans selling their tickets. I forget the poster in another thread about this, but he complained that he felt he had to sell his tickets because Brewers/Cubs games were just to feisty for him to enjoy going. Hello, a big reason the games are like that is because people like him sell their tickets to Cub fans. It is what it is. So long as enough Cubs fans are willing to pay a big enough bounty for tickets, a sizable chunk of Brewers fans will sell them.

I'm not dismissing the validity of the stat and i do think others so far are more deserving than Braun, but have you ever heard from those that vote that so and so has a better VORP?
-
I'm not excusing that behavior at all by the original poster, but go in nearly any stadium where rivals are playing and good sized numbers of the rival are mixing with the home team, bad behavior is a near given. That's simply to many drunk males in one place with conflicting agendas to not expect boorish behavior is going to happen.

Yost: Rickie's "doing fine," but has "never achieved"
danzig6767 replied to AJAY's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Actually, i wasn't watching it the other times in slow motion. All that a DVR does is record a show and i just watched that play multiple times by rewinding it. In fact i'm watching it again right now, the ball wasn't hit overly hard like i initially thought when i first saw the play. At first glance it almost looked like Weeks semi-dove for the ball, but really he just ranged over two steps to his right and he let the ball eat him up on a backhand. Unfortunately for Rickie and the Brewers, i've seen that happen to him to often. He's poor with his backhand compared to better infielders. If there was any defense for Weeks on the play that i can see, maybe he misjudged how hard the ball actually was hit because it kinda looks like the only reason to go down like he did was when an infielder is protecting himself on a bullet one hopper. I see no other reason why he went down to field the ball given it was so close to him, he didn't need to dive to get to the ball at all. If he had actually dove, the ball would have hit him in the chest. I'm not exaggerating in thinking even Prince playing second could have at least go a glove on the ball. Oh well, it is what it is. I'm sure Weeks works extremely hard on his defense and it has improved, but like a naturally bad shooter in basketball, even if he practices by shooting all the time, he should improve, but there likely isn't a high ceiling to how much better he'll realistically get. -
Official Scoring at Miller Park: changes or deficiencies?
danzig6767 replied to Sundown Kid's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
The game is on my DVR, Weeks made the play look much tougher than it needed to be because for whatever reason, he fell down while trying to backhand a ball that was only a few feet to the right of him. If Weeks would have full out dove for the ball, it would have hit him in the chest or stomach. -
Yost: Rickie's "doing fine," but has "never achieved"
danzig6767 replied to AJAY's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Sorry, i can't agree at all on the play where Fukudome was at the plate. I had the play on my DVR and the ball wasn't scorched, he hit it off the end of the bat and the ball was hit medium grounder speed, enough time to bounce three times before getting to Weeks. There was no great range involved either by Weeks just getting a glove on the ball. Weeks took two small steps to his right and instead of just backhanding the ball, he chose to fall on the ground while trying to backhand it for whatever reason. At most Weeks moved 3-5 feet to his right, IMO it was closer to an error than hit after watching the play multiple times. Durham may have also bungled the backhand, but i have zero doubt he'd have got a glove on it, the play initially looked way tougher than it really was. That's no surprise to me though. While Weeks has improved at balls hit right at him and here and there he'll make a great play, Rickie has poor hands when he has to range to either side of him. Balls way to often bounce off or under his glove on boarderline hit/error plays because he's just not an instinctual defensive player, like that Fukudome ball, Rickie should have fielded that ball. If that was to Counsell, i'd bet 8 or 9 times out of 10 that Craig at worst gets one out from that ball. -
. Fukudomes hit in the 7th was luck as if Weeks were one step more to the left it is a double play. True, if it was right at Weeks instead, it may have been a double play. On the flip side, if Weeks wasn't a poor defensive player, the ball would have been fielded and at least one out came from it. Rickie has made an art form at not making plays that are just barely tough enough for the official scorer to label it a hit. While it may not be 100 percent relevant in tonights game, but the lack of plate discipline is part of the reason for our offensive struggles at times, why our SLG comes with the bases empty, and why the Cubs score more runs than we do. The Cubs drew two key walks in the ninth that were the winning runs and is something they've done all year. It's pretty sad that a fly swatter power guy like Kendall has more walks than both Braun and Hart. Braun gets a lot of flack for his lack of patience, but Hart is even worse, Counsell has one less walk than Corey while only having 138 at bats compared to 400 for Hart. Hopefully pretty soon someone can get into his head so he realizes that it's ok to not swing at nearly every pitch.
