  1. Hall would be a fine everyday option at SS,he just has the bad fortune of being on a team that has a young talent like Hardy and the Brewers are going to give him every chance to prove he's the SS of the future. Just because many people on here are high on Hardy's future doesnt mean we all dislike Hall.I know some on this board cant stand him,but i dont fall in that group and many others think he's a valuable player. If Hall was an everyday SS this year, his OPS would be 6th in all of baseball at his position. Some want to cherry pick his numbers, but the fact is he's had an outstanding year and improved greatly. His numbers should be compared to other middle infielders, not thirdbaseman IMO when making an asessment of Hall as a player. On many other teams he'd be playing SS or second, not thirdbase. With that said,i think Hardy has the chance to be better and should be given the chance to prove it.If Hall continues to work hard and improve,he'll get a starting SS job soon enough on enough team.Lots of worse option than Hall on other teams.
  2. Do you honestly think GM's in baseball base their decisions on who they think are good/bad defensive players by what their ZR or RF is? People in charge of baseball operations know how crude both of those stats are.I highly doubt Melvin sat there watching Podsednik butcher flyballs and then said my eyes are tricking me,he really is a good defender since his ZR says he is. The Brewers arent going to make decisions on the future of Hardy based on a stat that at best is shaky in value.
  3. I cant take any of these defensive stats to seriously. When stats try to tell me Brady Clark is a better defensive CF than Andruw Jones,Beltran,Pierre, and equal to Edmonds i can't help but dismiss them pretty much. Last year Scott the butcher Podsednik was ranked as one of the better defensive CF's in ZR.Anyone who watched him play outfield for us and misjudge one ball after another knows how laughable that is. Edit--Want to add arm strength isnt a part of any off these stats. For players with a great arm or those with a noodle arm,it's a sizable part of what makes them the defesive player they are.
  4. If people want to use range factor to rank defensive players, then we would have to believe David Eckstein is the second best defensive shortstop in baseball. That's good for a laugh, not reality.
  5. Glad i missed this game, seems like a real yawner
  6. Baseball is a crazy game Go 12 innings and cant score a run to save your life, then put up 8 in three innings.
  7. And another thing about Turnbow not pitching there...if you guys ran the team, he'd pitch 162 games. Nope I just wouldnt follow some silly code like a sheep and only use my best reliever when some dumb stat says i should.Plenty of teams lose games in the 8th inning while the heart of the others team order is up and use an inferior reliever simply because it's not a save situation. Then the save situation vanished, its moronic
  8. Turnbow waiting to "save" the game did us alot of good chewing gum in the bullpen.
  9. Seriously, if we put in Turnbow here, who closes the game if we score? Jorge? Cappy2? That's why you don't put in Turnbow here. Saves are a silly stat. I'd rather my best reliever face their best hitters here and worry about getting three outs with the lead later.
  10. Guess we couldnt have used Turnbow with the top of the order up to start this inning. The MLB manager handbook only allows for closers in save situations.
  11. Saw that coming They should chain Brady to firstbase until the ball is hit
  12. Davis has great stuff,i'd like to see him get a chance to work with Maddux for an extended time.
  13. Jenkins is a walking double play if he hits anything on the ground
  14. Gotta love going from Webb to Buddy Groom Junkballer to a tee
  15. Talk about a brainlock by Webb
  16. Webb has pitched well tonight, better than Davis, lucky it's only 1-0.His sinker is just diving and i cant remember him leaving to many up in the zone.
  17. This was goes out to JJ's Girlfriend!!! No doubt being a pro athlete has perks.Hell, last game i attended there were two girls about 20-21 years old sitting close by us wearing Hardy shirts and both were ultra fine looking. The funny thing was watching this obviously married middle aged guy sitting in front of me with his wife trying to not let her catch him gawking at the two girls everytime they got up for any reason. The classic act like your looking forward through your sunglasses, but really your looking sideways. He even once did the arms behind his back pretend yawn and act like he was just generally looking in that direction as the girls in micro-miniskirts were heading out between innings. It was cracking up me and my cousin.
  18. I really feel bad for him.He has to know that he's more than deserving and yet he gets no respect. Then he has to sit back and see a guy like Perez get in while his hopes hang possibly by threads. Getting elected to the HOF is such a big honor it has to bother players that get shafted regardless if they act like they arent that upset. You see votes in these things like the HOF/MYP in not just baseball and you wonder what is the thinking or lack of it.Karl Malone MVP over Jordan.Gold Gloves to DH's.Perez in the Hall and Blyleven isn't.
  19. I wish there were a stat that gauged each AB somehow Over 400-500 at bats though,in the vast vast majority of cases things will even out for a player. In that many at bats it would take an incredible amount of bad luck to just make a bunch more unlucky outs than other hitters with a simular amount of at bats. Baseball is such a long season that generally it accurately paints a good picture of what players and teams performed well. It's pretty hard in alot of at bats or in 162 games for pretenders to shine because of mainly good fortune or just the opposite.
  20. You're never going to change the mind of the majority of folks who think some are to stat obssessed. Part of it i think you're right is some think just by watching that's all they need to judge what makes a player good or bad. Some of it is people who think there are hidden things in the game that stats don't give enough representation to,their minds won't be changed on that.Lastly there are alot of people who simply don't care enough to look deeply into the many many stats out their today. I fall partly into the 3rd catagory.I fully understand in such an individual sport like baseball, stats paint a pretty good picture of a players ability. With that said, beyond the basics of OBP/OPS/ERA/WHIP and maybe a few others,i just dont really care. I watch baseball to be entertained and am not really interested if there is a 5.257 percent better chance of scoring if we dont bunt in a given situation.I don't care what anyones range factor is.I dont care where we rank in pitches per at bat.I dont care what Lee's VORP is,but i do care what his OPS is.I dont care how many win shares Jenkins has,but i pay attention to his OBP and SLG.I dont care much what Capuano's percentage of line drives caught are,but i will check his WHIP or K/BB ratio.
  21. I went to the game and could only get rightfield bleacher seats. It was my first time sitting there and it was kinda fun because 2 guys kept giving some pitcher named Boyer in the Atlanta pen a hard time.Suprisingly Boyer was talking smack right back at the two guys and this went on for quite a few innings. I did get to watch Farnsworth warm up super close up,wow i couldnt imagine trying to just make any contact on a single one of his pitches. That dude throws really really hard.
  22. I voted no on him because I think he was a compiler who never dominated, Players have to be judged against their peers in regards to the position they played. How many catchers dominate? As a catcher Simmons put up numbers that are better than most catchers that ever played the game. You get a catcher who regularily is putting up way above average numbers for that position all while playing in pitchers parks, that's a rarity, unlike big hitting firstbaseman or outfielders. I'd put Simmons in,although i dont think it's a major injustice he's not in.It's a close call, but i just think Simmons was very underrated.
