  1. I might be the only one (though I don't get why that is the case), but I still hope they sign Prince. $60 million is a lot, but why would Prince take the first offer if he feels he's worth more? Since when is it a crime to negotiate?

  3. I see that John Hiatt is playing the Pantages on the 28th. Matisyahu (not my kind of thing, but he is reggae, I guess, technically) is playing at the Zoo that night as well. Lucinda Williams is playing the Zoo on the 30th. The RZA (you didn't mention hip-hop, but it's the Rzarector!) is playing 1st Avenue on the 30th. Romantic restaurants aren't my thing, so I can't help you there. There are plenty of good restaurants around, but no great ones, imo. Dinkytown, which is a neighborhood near the U of Minnesota campus, has some ok choices that aren't that expensive. I kind of like Vescio's, which is an Italian place. There are a couple places farther from downtown Minneapolis I really like, but they'd be confusing to get to from near the 'dome (then again, so might anything). as for other stuff, what are you into? The Walker Art Center is worth checking out, they've got a pretty nice collection of modern art. There is a science museum some people like in St. Paul. The Mississippi River runs through the middle of Minneapolis so some people like to hike (well, walk) or bike along that. There is some interesting nightlife in the part of the city called uptown (some ok restaurants too, including a couple crappy rib places). I dunno, there's a lot to do, like there is in any good sized city.
  4. when you say "good atmosphere" at a rib place, what do you mean?
  5. Speaking of this list, did anyone notice Kevin Garnett quote "White Heat" last night after the Celtics won the title? "Made it Ma! Top of the world!"
  6. environmental debates are boring, imo. I wouldn't be surprised if this stays unlocked for awhile.
  7. Yeah, Kendall should be getting some all-star votes (if it were 1998, not 2008).

  9. The crazy thing about that 2004 recap that pepsimax posted is that even ESPN (or the AP, whoever wrote the article) spelled Russ's name wrong. They went with the much maligned "Branyon" spelling.
  10. agreed, I think it might be an Iowa thing, the only people I've ever heard say it were either from Iowa or had parents from Iowa. Small sample size warning though.
  11. I like Ichiro, but Prince is too much to give up for him, considering age and contract status. Hardy or Weeks, maybe.
  12. no, the media was informed via email, not Willie himself.
  13. exactly. Men shouldn't wear sandals of any kind, in my opinion (actually, nobody should, but they are too large a part of women's wardrobes to eliminate, unfortunately). To quote GZA: "that's minimum, and feminine like sandals".
  14. Ichiro isn't all that overpaid on the diamond, if at all, and I'm surprised that people who follow the finances of the team as closely as some of the posters in this thread do would be so dismissive of his off-field value. Who says Ichiro isn't good in CF? UZR doesn't like Ichiro, but all other metrics do and this average of all the metrics ranked him 3rd best CF in MLB for 2007. It's hard to see how Ichiro isn't a much better player than, say, Carlos Lee or Alfonso Soriano. Lee is terrible at everything except slugging and BA, yet he's getting paid more than Ichiro. Soriano is a closer match because he is also a good baserunner and has some defensive value (despite him butchering a few this season). However, Ichiro plays the tougher defensive position and his value is tied to his OBP rather than his SLG. Actually, Ichiro even has a higher career OPS+ than both of those guys, and his advantage in offensive value gets wider when you consider that OBP is worth more than slugging. The only problem is that Ichiro is 2 years older than either of them. OTOH, his contract is shorter than Soriano's. edit: that $5.5 million in deferred money is per year, which makes Ichiro's yearly salary worth a total of (according to wikipedia) worth $16.1 million (slightly less than Lee or Soriano get per year). Considering Jose Guillen got $12 million per just last offseason, the "overpaid" epithet is getting old. If worse players get paid as much or nearly as much, how is a guy overpaid, rather than just paid the going rate?
  15. Wait, I like Hughes too, but let's not go nuts. Hughes was rated better (barely) before 2007, but I can't imagine Yovani's success in the majors wouldn't make him likely to be rated higher now. It's only 130 innings, but they've been dominant.
  16. I hate to call you out, but this seems a bit sexist. I realize that this thread is jokey, and I don't want to get into a big thing, but it's not cool, imo.
  17. why would they hire Randolph? Ned beat him out in the interview process when he was originally hired. Plus, after the collapse last year and now the poor start this year when many people had the Mets pegged as a contender, the bloom is definitely off of Randolph's rose. Also, from what I've heard from Mets fans, Willie is just as much an ineffectual guy as Ned.
  18. It finally happened, after weeks (or maybe months) of speculation. I don't know that Manuel is any kind of answer, though he did win a manager of the year award, iirc. He was the Mets bench coach this year. There was also a coaching shakeup, with Rick Peterson, the famous pitching coach, also getting the axe. link
  19. It shouldn't take the Yanks six weeks to zip their fly.
  20. The thing about calling Nelson up is that a AAA OPS of .950 doesn't translate to as good of an MLE as you'd think. It translates to an OPS of about .780, which is nice, but basically league average. I don't see that helping right now. If he could play 2nd or SS or catch, yes, it would help. But he's not going to replace Braun, Prince, or Hart and those are the only positions he could conceivably play. Iribarren at least makes sense as a pinch runner and utility guy. Nelson would just be a Dillon, getting an AB every other game. That would be nice if the rosters were 26 or 27, but guys like Nelson (and Dillon, and even Branyan) are hurt a lot by the 12-13 man pitching staffs that teams have been going to recently. They hit enough to be MLB caliber but not really enough to carry one of the easier defensive position like first or the OF corners. So, they get stuck with that 4A label because teams don't want to waste one of their 3-4 bench spots on a pseudo-slugger who only gets 100 ABs a year, figuring that guys with more defensive versatility, even if they have less bat, will play more and thus be more useful.
  21. Yeah, nice to see Cody get moved up. I'd actually like to see them be a bit aggressive with him given that's he's already pretty old. If he does well in his first few appearances in A+, I hope they move him to AA right away.
  22. maybe. I would rather keep Rivera though. He has 9 home runs in his 190 ABs with the Brewers. I like having a back-up catcher with at least a little bit of pop.
  23. I just saw an article in the New York Sun that speculates that the Brewers would have interest in Brian Schneider. It is beyond me to figure out why that would be the case though. Here is the passage: But teams like the Phillies, Brewers and Angels lack the catching options that the Mets have. Should one of these teams overvalue catcher defense, as the Mets have so far, a deal of Schneider for some young talent is one the Mets need to consider. Obviously the Brewers appear to value catcher defense because we have heard no end of discussion about how great Kendall is back there. However, if they thought Kendall wasn't actually that great, would they be playing him so much? He's playing at a pace that is sure to trigger his option for next year, and Schneider is also signed for next year. Schneider is an even worse hitter than Kendall, so it's not clear why the Brewers would want to pay $5 million for Kendall's backup to play 15-20 times when they could have Rivera do it for near the minimum. Not to mention the fact that Angel Salome is having a pretty good year at AA and may be ready to come up at some point next year. Link: http://www.observer.com/2008/mets-trade-deadline-options
  24. Escobar has become more likely to be a major leaguer merely by playing pretty successfully in AA. It's natural to have skepticism about any prospect until they at least show they can handle the higher levels of the minors. Thus, I don't think any lack of adulation for Escobar in the past was necessarily out of line.
  25. Yeah, but that warning that the leagues give out is not the actual legal standing of the issue, or at least that is my understanding. Again, if that was the actual law, this website and any website that talked about games would be in jeopardy. I think the language refers to the actual broadcast, rather than the game itself.
