  1. While I don't think it is necessary to have a 'sideline' reporter on a baseball broadcast (it's not like she has access to the dugouts or team clubhouses; all of her appearances are filmed in the stands or in the stadium concourse), I really don't have a problem with Sophia Minnaert's role on the broadcasts. ...it's not like Rick Schlesinger is going to interview himself about the promotions on the next homestand, after all. If "personality on-screen" means more Bob Brainerd fan interviews, I'm all in favor of Sophia's continued, robotic employment.
  2. That and his Stein's ad "What's Indieyard" are just grating on my ears. Not on the level of the seemingly never-ending battle of Marney Gelner v. teleprompter, but still bad.
  3. I had been thinking any move would first be made coming out of the All-Star break, but a few more back-breaking homers could speed up that timetable by a few weeks.
  4. Is it wrong to hear college 3b, questionable power and think (a lefty) Jeff Cirillo (-type...with the obvious caveat that this is a young guy who we can only hope reaches the big club at some point)? EDIT: Colby shows him as a RH hitter; MLB Draft tracker shows LH.
  5. I was going to ask if the 5'8" listing on MLB's draft tracker was actual height; if PG has him listed at 5'11"...it might be. I'm sure this is a 'signability' pick (in that they know they can actually sign him....and do so under slot money), but he seems like a player who could certainly move through a farm system that is a bit light on position players. At that height, it's tough to imagine he'll project into a hitter with much power, but not every CF has to be a Carlos Gomez-type.
  6. Wasn't Supposed to Rain 'til 5... by bjkrautk, on Flickr Was not terribly impressed by the T-Rats starting pitcher. The defense, including the backup catcher, cut down a number of baserunners in the early innings. I was surprised at the number of bunt attempts, because it seemed so much easier to get on base by swinging the bat. Ramirez was taken out after the first rain delay, which was disappointing only in that he had been on-deck when the prior inning ended. Coulter looked pretty good at the plate (not catching; he was the DH).
  7. Regardless of which name wins, my response will be "Aw Shucks."
  8. Are more newsworthy events happening around this year's Brewers team, or has the Brewers PR staff just done a better job promoting / capitalizing on these sorts of things? - These two Gomez events (including a return visit for the autograph girl with a chance to throw out the first pitch last night, while sitting in what I believe are the owner's seats). - The "Happy" viral video. - #WCWW - #BallparkPup ...I'm sure that I'm missing a story or two, but I think you get my point. I'd say it's a result of the team having a winning record, but these "soft news" events started back in Spring Training.
  9. Get Yo out of there; no benefit for him to pitch with a bad leg in a game they're already down 4 runs.
  10. The interesting question if (knock on wood) one of the starters goes down is whether Thornburg gets first crack at the rotation, or if they go directly to one of the AAA starters for that spot. I'm glad to see Fiers getting his command back, or a reversal of whatever his problem seemed to be in 2013. While I'd like to see him perform in the majors, I don't see any reason to upset a successful, quality rotation just to squeeze him in. It's crazy to me that this team is more than 5 starting pitchers deep.
  11. Can Bill Hall Pitch for Cleveland?
  12. Is there any reason Rickie can't start taking fly balls in the outfield, to at least be an option to put in the outfield for a game or two if needed? (I remember when his defense was the problem rather than his bat, and a lot of us assumed he'd be moved to the outfield eventually.) I realize that a lot of the need for added versatility goes away by Saturday (when Schafer returns), but there is still the lingering issue of Braun's back and Gomez's suspension. It would be nice to have some extra flexibility on the bench if it came to that.
  13. If it was the interview on Bill Michaels show, not exactly. Luc was asked if he would pitch Wang in a close game, to which he said - to his credit - 'no.' Lucroy noted that Wang's fastball velocity is great, and that his delivery makes it "sneaky fast" because it gets on the hitter so quickly; Wang's secondary pitches aren't major league ready yet, which makes it difficult to use him in high-leverage situations. (I don't usually listen to the show, but I happened to catch the interview on a drive back from the Courthouse.)
  14. If you work out a trade, he can be sent down without waivers, because this would be his first option year (as his first year on any team's 40-man roster). Without a trade, he would have to clear waivers before Pittsburgh could re-claim him (without adding him to their 40-man roster?).
  15. Years of collective frustration have taught me not to poke a sleeping Cardinal.
  16. Is it wrong that I want to play the app version of "Cones of Dunshire" right now?
  17. The suspension just came down today; he wasn't "pre-serving" the suspension last night....he just didn't play. Agreed that the off day will make it easier for Lucroy to handle catching everyday; it's basically 3 games consecutive (Monday - Wednesday), a day off, then another 3 games. Maybe float him an extra off day in the next series, but it's not that different from his usual routine.
  18. I'm wearing the Rose Bowl-colored glasses as well. I'd like to see him incorporate some of those catchphrases into his call (the "Book it" expression he gives a 3-pointer would make a succinct HR tagline....if he felt more confident in tracking fly balls to the outfield to premeditate), but I think he needs to develop a comfort level with calling baseball - and calling the game for TV instead of radio.
  19. This is one of the best shows on TV, and I hope that Maslany playing one character impersonating another character never grows old. It is ridiculous just how nuanced her performances are on that show.
  20. I dunno, Maldy threw and appeared to land a pretty good haymaker. He might get 5 games for that. Besides if Gomez gets say 3 games, they are also short on OF especially with Schafer on DL and Bianchi's an emergency OF as well. That's not to mention a pen that's very stretched that could use an extra arm. I'd be shocked if there were no roster moves. I'm assuming Gomez will appeal any suspension, if only to serve those games when Schafer is available to fill in for him.
  21. Elite athletes are high-strung; it's a mostly-accepted part of getting themselves into the mindset to compete at such a high level. Baseball players who "take offense" to the way the other team is playing tend to be projecting some of that anxiety on the outsider. Pittsburgh is being dominated by Milwaukee right now; they're 1-6 against the Brewers, which is almost entirely the difference in the standings between the two clubs. The Braves incident last year came as Atlanta was playing bad baseball going into the playoffs. It's no different than plunking the next batter after a HR; it's an act of frustration after public failure. While certain players - like Gomez or Nyjer Morgan - are likely to draw the focus because of their style of play, the reaction is always disproportionate to the offense....because the actor is blowing off steam.
  22. The tough question is whether Lucroy will still be playing catcher past age 30. While the bat plays, a good deal of his value comes from his defense. Extending him now would probably mean overpaying for a 1b by the end of those extra 2-3 years.
