  1. If you assume that RRR wanted Figaro to close last night's game, then Axford was as good an option as the remaining alternatives: - Narveson moved to the DL - Kintzler got cuffed around the day before - Henderson and Gorzellany had pitched in consecutive games, and were unavailable (presumably but-for extra innings) - Gonzalez was already used as a LOOGY in prior to Axford finishing off the 7th inning (...and gave up a hit) ...that leaves Axford and Badenhop (who had also given up runs in his last two appearances, and is carrying an ERA over 8). In that circumstance, is the right answer to pitch Figaro 2 innings and hope for the best, or go with the guy who just left a runner stranded to end the previous inning? I have a hard time second-guessing a decision when I don't see a "good" alternative being bypassed.
  2. Whether or not the Brewers had a plan going into the season is one thing, and I get how losing your top 4 options on the corner IF depth chart (Hart, Ramirez, Gamel, Green, +/- Bianchi) poses a challenge, but the Brewers have a young player on the roster right now who can't get a sniff at the lineup. I don't follow the minor league teams as closely as many of you, so I will defer to experience, but is Josh Prince that much worse an option at 3b than Betancourt (.290 career OBP / .391 career SLG // .681 career OPS) or Gonzalez (.292 OBP / .399 Slg. // .690 OPS)? I came away from Sunday's game impressed with Prince's ABs (a double and a loud out to the warning track). Why not let the guy have a start to see what he could do in a full game?
  3. Siskel & Ebert changed the way that I think about movies...by showing me how to think critically about movies, as opposed to the passive observances of my childhood. His presense will be missed.
  4. Honestly, if I didn't know her name from all of the outside discussions of her, I don't think I would even notice her during a broadcast. I'm far more focused in on the pitcher, catcher, and hitter when I watch.
  5. I think Axford will get a longer leash from the management than he will from the fans, which makes him a decent guess for 2013 Whipping Boy. I just hope his actual performance doesn't merit the disdain.
  6. These new iPad commercials (with the series of words, and people chanting ever ~5th one) are just flat-out terrible.
  7. Imagine when I moused-over the thread title, and found out it had no advice as to where to buy new spy equipment! The WBC seems like a good thing; it has value if it draws attention in places where baseball is fighting for attention out in Soccer-country (Spain and Brazil qualified for the first time this year). Since baseball is no longer an Olympic medal event, I like the idea of an international competition as a showplace for the sport. What is difficult to say from my perspective is the type of attention these games get in the participant countries. I like the nationalism, and I like the games on a conceptual level. I think it is something that can grow in its importance over decades, even if it's not completely there in its third iteration. It would also help the profile of the games if someone other than Japan won the thing.
  8. I don't have anything constructive to post, outside of "Welcome Back," but the fastball.com reunion talk makes me feel obligated to say it.
  9. There's no 'c' in 'Pithers' because our guys reject the very notion of only having average stuff.
  10. I'm not going to start a thread about it, but as the guy who has thumbed his nose at the idea of Tom Petty and Paul McCartney singing decades old songs at halftime of the Super Bowl, how good was Beyonce?
  11. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8084/8375336128_f85912b0d9_z.jpg Just slow and boring; nothing to see here.
  12. Axford re-tweeted a congratulations on being named to the Canadian WBC team on Sunday.
  13. Even if it weren't funny, this movie would make a great excuse to ogle Katrina Bowden; would not have seen it but for Netflix Instant. Liked Skyfall, but it walks a tightrope in being overly meta for a Bond film (and this is coming from a "Community" fan). Also enjoyed the Hobbit, but I don't know that 3D adds to much of anything (other than the ticket price). Having seen it a few weeks ago, I can't point back to a great 3D effect.
  14. I know that I'm not the only one watching UW-Marquette right now...
  15. Someone did, but no one posted in it. viewtopic.php?f=67&t=29121 (Honestly not worth the effort to merge the threads; just lock the old one.)
  16. Not a great pre-season for CBB fans in this state. * Gasser injured himself a week and a half ago, and will be red-shirting the season for Wisconsin. * Yesterday, Marquette lost Todd Mayo to academic ineligibility. http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/8598226/todd-mayo-marquette-golden-eagles-academically-ineligible UWM, UWGB, you're next! As a Badger fan first and foremost, I'm looking forward to seeing Sam Dekker, and hopeful that Marshall can hold up at the point.
  17. Have to pull out all my old high school Spanish knowledge for this one, the handsome white guy? I like it. I thought it was supposed to be a "Three Amigos!" reference. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092086/ Clearly one of us has been set up for disappointment.
  18. Gomez doesn't appear to have been more selective (he swung at a higher % of pitches inside and outside the strike zone in comparison to other years), and didn't have a massive increase in batting average / OBP (he doesn't walk often enough for there to be much of a discrepancy between the two). The only thing that appears to have changed is that he's hitting more HRs. Obviously, that's a valuable commodity, and he's gradually increased his HR/FB rate over the past few seasons, so it does not appear to be a fluke. At the same time, he's a player whose already been traded twice in his career based on potential, and may finally be living up to that potential now. The Brewers have a player in Schafer who appears close to ML ready at a fraction of the cost. While I can see both sides, I would lean towards trading him. This is a 'sell high' moment; if you can get a premium for his potential over the next 1-2 seasons, you can avoid signing him for the Marquis Grissom years. (20 HR power, low average, solid defensive CF. For comparison, Grissom was with the Brewers from age 31-33...right around the endpoint for a 5 year extension for Gomez. http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=652&position=OF ). If they do not like what's available on the market, they can certainly hold onto him for another season and go from there.
  19. ...I would, but I wouldn't want to sound so defeated. (Is this the first time the Brewers faced the Pirates on talk like a pirate day?)
  20. ...does this mean we'll have more people trying to get on the scoreboard, since they'll be able to purchase a permanent reminder of that time they did that thing? I'm sure it's a good idea from a marketing standpoint (not to mention, creating a revenue stream out of something you were already producing, as I'm sure the marginal costs associated with recording and streaming are relatively minimal). My fear is the unintended consequences; I don't want to sit behind the woman who brings 4 different signs & whose sole hope is that the camera will focus on her for 8 seconds*. * - Not suggesting that there is a gender bias to being on the big screen; just that the last time I witnessed this behavior at MP, it was a woman waving the signs (and considering myself fortunate she wasn't actually blocking my line-of-sight to the field).
  21. Someone mentioned the Wisconsin way book in a previous Landlord-Tenant thread, so I'll just link this here. http://datcp.wi.gov/uploads/Consumer/pdf/WisconsinWayWEB.pdf ...and if you happen to come across the automatic renewal clause topic in the index (which I'm certainly not recommending that you do, since I'm not your lawyer and this isn't legal advice), then so be it.

  23. I find myself considerably less interested in watching the Olympics for a few hours.
  24. I have a few good ones from years past (sitting in the front row for the unscheduled doubleheader against the Astros, the 5 HR inning, watching Hideo Nomo pitch a great game with Big Blue still collapsed on top of Miller Park in the background, watching Ryan Braun homer - and error at 3b - during spring training of his rookie year, any game featuring Molitor Yount & Gantner)... ...but Game 5 vs. Arizona trumps them all. Never seen the park so electric from the first pitch to the post-game celebrations.
