  1. He's only 33; that's not nearly old enough to be a Giants FA position player! I assume Khalil Greene becomes an expensive bench player. (Edit: Why did I pull up the Padres? One 'San's as good as another, I guess.) Considering their on-roster options include Ivan Ochoa (.511 OPS), Ryan Roehlinger (.309), and Emmanuel Burriss (.686), the bar isn't set especially high for Renteria to be an improvement.
  2. I saw the later starting time on my TV listings and hoped for the best....hard for me to believe they're doing it this way, but so be it.
  3. From the looks of it, Wisconsin's showdown with #2 ranked UConn is going to be aired on tape delay at 8:45 on FSN here in Wisconsin. It's the rare time when I'm glad there's a Bucks game going on....since it means I get to stagger my viewership with the Packers game.
  4. I bought the drum silencer pads; it's basically like adding adhesive mousepads on top of your drum pads. I think I get better rebound now, and they're definitely quieter. The biggest advantage to the RB2 drum kit is the metal-plated pedal....I'm worried about the pedal on mine snapping at some point. Just because you have sets in that town that would require you to play the same songs....doesn't mean you have to jump from set to set. Once you have enough starts that the game starts to open up for you, I rarely play back-to-back sets in the same venue. Also, the Tour Challenges are a great way to start unlocking all the songs in the game; added bonus: you get achievement points / trophies / special equipment for going completing the top-tier challenges. The game is even smart enough to give you additional challenges based on any DLC you've purchased (including the songs exported from RB1). Challenge events don't unlock new tour venues, but you do still get cash for your rocker.
  5. Watching on DVD, so I'm a full season behind. (For obvious reasons, I won't be posting here too often.)
  6. This reminds me of something else I ought to point out: Rock Band 1 (and presumably 2) use the exact same equipment for the PS2 and PS3 instruments; the second guitar I bought indicated on the box that it would work with both systems. I know that, at least previously, that kind of forward-compatability did not exist for GH3 (haven't heard anything about GH:WT). I don't think you can upload RB1 songs for use in RB2 - like you could with the PS3 versions - but it's better than buying a whole new plastic band. And, just to point it out, the Rock Band 2 drums allow you to buy cymbal attachments that can be attached above the kit and used like the GHWT cymbals; there is no port to attach cymbals to the RB1 kit (which I am fine with).
  7. You need to be an XBox Live Gold account (ie, paying subscriber) in order to access Netflix Streaming. You also have to be a Netflix subscriber. (Personally, I'm holding out another month for my TiVo HD to get Netflix streaming....but that doesn't happen for another month.)
  8. In his 17th full season, he finally shed the "Best pitcher to never win 20 games in a season" tag. Congratulations to him on that. I think he'll probably get in to Cooperstown, but it will take awhile.
  9. Cheers Monty Python's Flying Circus Seinfeld Saturday Night Live South Park The Cosby Show Night Court Family Guy Family Ties (although I haven't seen an episode in nearly 20 years, so I'm a bit scared as to whether it holds up) Married with Children Honorable Mentions: Clerks - The Animated Series (since ABC only aired 2 of the 6 episodes), Scrubs, In Living Color, The Kids in the Hall, Frasier, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Frisky Dingo. 3rd Rock From The Sun, NewsRadio, the British Office and Black Books are also shows I've enjoyed. I'm amazed that NBC green-lit a show like Kath and Kim while Black Books remains unadapted. It has a Seinfeld-esque quality to the characters. Not every British show seems so easily adaptable (and by that, I mean "Spaced," which was great....but isn't the same show without Simon Pegg.) I can't say that I fully understand the complaints about Saturday Night Live; I really like most of the current cast (Will Forte notwithstanding). I tend to think that the show has been on so long that people tend to focus on the sketches that clicked for them....and as a result, they forget about all the ill-conceived filler.
  10. There are two kinds of profit when it comes to baseball franchises: operating profit/loss, and the underlying value of the franchise. Mark A. may have taken a paper loss for the 2008 Brewers, but he did wonders for improving the value of the franchise were he to sell the team. Compare the purchase price for the Brewers when Selig bought the Pilots, and compare that to the selling price to Mark A -- MLB franchises are good long-term holds for most investors....if only because there are so few of them.
  11. http://kotaku.com/5086709...ompatibility-chart-update (From the comments on the site, it appears to be an imperfect chart, but it gives you a basic idea.) Is World Tour better than Rock Band? Much like the RB guitar v. GH guitar arguments, it's largely a matter of who you talk to. On the PS3, I prefer Rock Band, because I have been able to pick up so many songs that I like via the online store. Also, Rock Band on PS3/360 allows you to export nearly all your songs from the first game for use in RB2 (don't really know about that feature on Wii or PS2; RB1 doesn't have access to the online tracks, because of the lack of storage space on the Wii/PS2. They release the downloadable content in "track pack" discs that work with the game, if memory serves.) My original RB guitar had to be replaced about a week after I bought the game, and the one they replaced it with has issues with the tilt sensor (registering 'overdrive' / star power). I bought a second guitar for multiplayer, and use that most of the time....only to have to replace a broken spring on the whammy bar (I actually prefer the feel of the rubber band I put in the spring's place). The original RB instruments had a high defect rate, while the GH3 guitar seemed to work much better. This year, I've heard far more problems/issues with the GH:WT equipment than RB2 instruments. That said, most people with experience playing both seem to prefer the GH:WT drums to RB1 or 2's set.
  12. Badgers game is - thankfully - not close, so I'll mention this: I'm really liking Jim Jackson's color commentary during tonight's game. I don't know how long he's been doing TV work, but he's fairly smooth.
  13. I really really liked 4, and I bought 5. But 4 is so great I really just don't want to stop playing it. But zombie mode is fun on 5.Just to be the one to say it, CoD:WaW =/= CoD5. This year's Call of Duty game was developed using the CoD4 engine, but the game was developed by Treyarch (who did CoD3). CoD4 was such a successful game, the Developer (Infinity Ward) was granted exclusive rights from Activision to make the numeric games in the sequence. Next fall's game will be "Call of Duty 5" by Infinity Ward. Too busy playing Valkyria Chronicles to worry about any other fall releases; unfortunately, I'll probably finish the game by the weekend.
  14. I don't think there is much in the way of new ps2 shooters on the horizon. "Call of Duty: World at War Final Fronts" should have released last week, but I can't find a review on it. If you think that you might want to upgrade to a PS3 at some point, I would point out that the Rock Band 1 bundle for PS2 just dropped in price (and the instruments are forward compatible).
  15. I just bought a new laptop to replace my old one due to a power cord problem. The cord has to be held in place in order for the laptop's battery to charge. (My power profile on the old laptop set the screen to dim slightly when running off battery power....so it's really obvious when it isn't plugging in properly.) I'd been looking to upgrade anyway (nearly 3 years old....and struggled running iTunes video content), so I didn't look into replacement costs. I'd recommend you bring the laptop in to Best Buy (or some similar tech support operation), and find out how much they charge for that kind of work. Depending on the price, and your situation, it might be worth it to put that money into a new laptop as well. Sidenote: It's not much help to you now, but this is the perfect example of why you should try to backup your data. I bought an external hard drive a year ago, and plug it in every few months to keep documents, music, and photos safe.
  16. I could easily see Kapler going back to Boston, so I can't consider him a lock to re-sign. I'd be willing to bring Durham back, but I'd expect the Brewers to try and find a younger option (maybe someone who could play SS/3b as well); ditto for Counsell. Branyan or Lamb make for a good bench / platoon options (or emergency outfielders); if I could only sign one of the two, Branyan's recent injuries make me opt for Lamb. The longer Sheets is out on the market, the better the chances are he'll be back. If he's not signed by Christmas, there's a real chance he's back for one more year. Gagne would be best served going somewhere else. I somewhat expect Mota to get a better offer somewhere else, but I'd be willing to bring him back. I don't know whether Shouse's skills started eroding, or if he was just overworked down the stretch. Seeing as how his ERA was the lowest it's been in the past 4 years (and his IP was the highest it's been in the past 4 years), I'm going to guess the latter.
  17. Two days before my new laptop is supposed to get here, I get the email reinviting me to WoW. It's been over 2 years since I've played....and I do want to pick it up again for a few months (make it to 70). I just have way too many other fun games to play before signing my life over to Blizzard again for a few months. (I actually dropped WoW after playing for 3-4 months....as I realized that it was more like work than my real job.)
  18. Hoffman's 2008 numbers are pretty consistent to his previous years (and actually better K rates and K:BB than he's had in the previous 3-4 years), except for a jump in HRs hit against him (at home). That's a bit of a red flag for me, especially considering a shift from the least HR-friendly park in the NL to Miller Park, but it wouldn't stop me from trying to sign the guy. You wouldnt' expect to see more strikeouts than innings pitched for a guy who's losing his 'stuff' - and he understands how to pitch (placement, location). I think he's far less of a risk than Gagne was last year.
  19. I'm just glad that Salomon decided to play one more year, as he was considering retiring over accepting the trade to Milwaukee. It's not quite going out on top, but I think he knew and understood that the Brewers were likely to bring in someone else to at least compete for the Closer spot....and that's now how he'd like to end his career. Can't say that I blame him for that.
  20. http://www.gamestop.com/common/images/lscreen/1-e28f9d39-e0ab-4fba-83e7-0686a308ae83-l.jpg Apologies for the JP screenshot, but it's the only one I could find that wouldn't re-size most readers' screens. Valkyria Chronicles is a game that I cannot recommend highly enough; a Strategy / RPG that's a fun to play as it is to look at. I'm only a few battles in after buying it last night, but this is my kind of game. PS3 owners owe it to themselves to at least download the demo from the PSN store (it's free now; no need to buy last month's issue of Qore) and give it a try.
  21. Mixed bag -- the dedicated comedy bits (including the Buttlicker call) were really good, but the plot points (the sales call, the wedding plan, and the ending) brought the show down a bit. (Also, I liked the picture mug idea way more when I thought it was just an Andy thing.)
  22. 2 starts of 5 innings (or less) for every start of 8 innings (or more), and a guy that you feel comfortable with in your rotation....but less comfortable while actually watching him pitch.
  23. For what it's worth, that would be "Safety Dance" by Men without Hats. (What....somebody has to be the '80s pop music snob, and I spent way too much time watching Mtv back when it had music on television.) That's how the format works; play a bunch of random songs, and hope that people stick around through the songs they don't like (and the commercials). It's basically an iPod shuffle with ads interspursed. I say that as the kind of consumer that music stations hate; I listen if there's a song that I like, or I jump around looking for the next good song. I only listen to commercials when they're more enjoyable than the alternative(s).
  24. I guess the four or five years in Pittsburgh don't count for much...I don't dislike Trenni, but I've never really understood the gush of attention she gets.
  25. Starbucks is offering a free cup of coffee to any voters (don't know if it applies to non-coffee drinks....which is the only way I'd take them up on it.) I think Krispy Kreme may have been offering something as well (at least in some parts of the country).
