  1. Too me, that last double-play attempt is why there is no need to try and re-sign Felipe Lopez. I think his goal on that last play was to not get hurt. That his why he ran through the bag instead of hanging in there. It cost him a lot on the throw and may have cost the Brewers the double play. I know that I am biased against Felipe, I think that he is a me-first player. I feel that was another example of it. He wasn't going to risk a need injury and cost himself some money even if it meant a Brewer victory.
  2. When he fell behind Cook Manny was trying to just guide the ball. I think that he had Helton stuck out though. Manny seems to be battling confidence problems. I still think that he needs to simplify his delivery. I don't believe that he is always on balance.
  3. I say let Felipe go and we can get our compensatory draft choice. I have always felt that Ricke has more problems than he should with balls hit in the air, so I don't think that he is outfield material. I also think that Rickie plays a lot harder than Felipe. My gut (I know, it is not a statistical measure) tells me that Felipe is a guy who will play better in a contract year than after he signs a contract.
  4. I read in The Sporting News this week that the Bucks have been trying to stay below the luxury tax treshold. Because NBA revenues went down this year that threshold is going down. The NBA recently told teams that the threshold is going to be lower than first thought (it is not set yet). I think that is why the Bucks have been letting people go that they could have traded in February. They probably that they could fit in Sessions and CV in February. I don't expect to be contending for a play-off spot this year, but I think it will look like a Scott Skiles team. I think that for a change we will play harder than our opponents (that is more of a shot at the teams before 08-09). We may decide to like this team the way we liked the 2003 Brewers. I think it is a bit early to give up on Hammond. A lot of the players we have gotten rid of are guys who create headaches for their coaches (see Charlie Villanueva) while a lot of the guys we have added have a reputation for being coachable, high effort guys. It will take time, but our core was not the core of a play-off team.
  5. I seem to remember something in Macha's press conference to announce his hiring which led me to believe that he some expertise in evaluating young talent. I don't believe that we have seen that. I am going to say something I said after the 2007 season. That is we may as well fire him now (or after the season) instead of firing him during next season. We don't want to have one manager set up the roster and the pitching roles, and then ask someone else to fix our problems during the season. I see signs that Ken is lacking in credibility in our dugout. I also am not sure that I trust Doug to hire a manager. He has hired Johnny Oates, Jerry Narron, Ned Yost, and Ken Macha. That makes him 1 for 4 with a 3 manager slump (although I should give Ned credit for bringing professionalism back to the team). If Doug gets to hire the next manager then Attanasio needs to put some limitations on him: no former catchers, no one who he ever had a beer with in the 20th century, and no one who has ever been employed by the Texas Rangers.
  6. It is easy to say that our lack of depth hurt us. But when some pitchers went down the other guys didn't exactly step up and give us a lot of quality innings (excluding Yo).
  7. Where is Matt Gamel?
  8. Manny has a curveball today. IMO that is the difference between good Manny and bad Manny. It seems that too often he throws nothing but fastballs early in the count in order to set up the splitter. Then when the hitters start sitting on the fastball he tries to nibble. We know how that goes. Today he has had the Cardinal hitters off balance. Speaking of Albert, he hit a walk-off about a week ago and crossed home plate about 3 days later. It is a good thing he respects the game.
  9. Is Lopez hurting? With Smoltz's lefty-righty splits you would think that we would have both him and Counsell in the line-up today.
  10. I think next year we will be surprised by our team salary. After drawing 3,000,000 this year, and with next year likely being Prince's last year with us, I wouldn't be surprised if we get above $100,000,000. Since I think it will be Prince's last year with us I think that we should re-sign Cameron. I saw a lot of people post statistical reason why we shouldn't. But I get the feeling that he is a good clubhouse presence and on-top-of-that he plays an outstanding centerfield. We do need more OPS guys. But I don't think we need to replace four starters in order to do that. I don't think that we can replace four starters with better OPS guys unless we get into Red Sox salary areas. EDIT: A subsequent made me realize that I was unclear about Prince. I think that we will trade Prince after next season. If he starts 2011 with us, I doubt that he will finish it with us.
  11. This argument reminds me a bit of the Brett Favre argument, it is becoming emotional. There are big JJ Hardy fans who post on this board who would like to see JJ here for the next 10 years. Then there are people who are anti-JJ or are Alcides Escobar fans who want to see Alcides start for the next 10 years. The arguments are starting to de-evolve from the provable. I think that we are lucky to have both shortstops. I like JJ, but I think it is time to go with Alcides because, for the time being, it will save us money. I also like that Alcides provides a dimension of speed that we lack. Next year, if we bat Rickie lead-off and Alcides 2nd we could force pitchers to throw a lot more fastballs to Ryan and Prince because of our speed on the bases in front of them.
  12. Without the injuries to Chris Capuano and Mark Rogers, and the suspensions of Jeremy Jeffress, our starting pitching situation would look a lot different.
  13. I don't know of too many organizations that depend on their ability to build their pitching staffs through trade. The real problem with our staff is either that we haven't drafted pitchers well or that we struggle developing potential pitchers.
  14. It appears that Justin Lehr is now too good for us. My wish for the remainder of the season is to have us play with intensity for the last 35 games. Even if we have to use the Colorado Rockies method of accomplishing that.
  15. Wow, can we get a an important out? No matter who we bring in for middle relief, we know that they will fail. If we leave the starter in longer, he fails. I can not believe how bad our pitching staff is. Now Justin Lehr is in line for a win. This is surreal.
  16. Finally, an ex-Brewer is playing like he did when he was a Brewer.
  17. The problem isn't that Braun misjudged a ball, or Vargas threw it away, or Stetter hit his batter; the problem is all of those things. We make a lot of mistakes during the course of a game. It seems to be getting worse as the season goes along. This is getting tough to watch.
  18. It helped Gorman that he really didn't have to carry the offense. If Gorman went into a slump we still Molitor-Yount-Cooper-Simmons-Oglivie in front of him. As to Patterson, I don't think that he would be the answer in Center either. I think that Cameron is a far superior offensive and defensive player. I think that Jody Gerut would be superior to Patterson over an entire season.
  19. Felipe Lopez with his normal lazy defensive effort. I wouldn't mind seeing our "Nashville" infield of Irribarren-Escobar-Gamel play most of September.
  20. I don't think it matters what the Brewers offer. I think that if we offered something outlandish like $100,000,000 over 4 years, I think that Boras would turn that down because he though he could more than that out of a bigger market team.
  21. If nothing else, this is a show of love for Davis. Maybe this plus Davis's enjoyment of Milwaukee could hopefully enable us to sign him at a rate lower than what he may want from anybody else.
  22. Gonzalez seems to have the old George Brett/Wade Boggs/Barry Bonds strike zone. If we doesn't swing at a 2-strike pitch, it will be called a ball.
  23. There has been some speculation as to whose spot in the rotation that Davis would take, should we acquire him. I would like to see Looper go to the bullpen. I don't have the numbers, but he seems to do well the first time through the order. He just seems to run out of gas rather early. When he starts you need to have the entire bullpen available. I think that he would be quite successful in the 6th and 7th innings.
  24. Parra had a Juan Nieves start today. 5 and 2/3 with an ERA over 9, yet it would take a serious bullpen meltdown in order for Manny to lose. I think Manny got tired. Everything was up.
