Cappy himself admitted he wasn't ready and agreed to extend his call up or release date. The guy is coming off a second major surgery, why rush it? They have an off day tomorrow...no reason to rush Cappy.

No doubt Invader...the Sabathia comp was a real bad break and if a team like the Yankees has a few bad drafts they can just go pay up and sign a bunch of young Latin players to make up for it. At a minimum they need to fix the draft system. edit: add: Not retaining Sheets? Like we needed another injured pitcher last year and another one this year with an ERA above 6? Give Melvin credit here for not biting. They had no chance to sign CC...a franchise like this can't afford a contract like that.

Bush has been a ticking time bomb all season...he finally exploded yesterday. I really like Bush and I think he's been way underrated by fans prior to his injury last year. He just hasn't been the same since. You guys are correct as well...he just can't live at 85-86. I hope he can get healthy or fixed. If he can get back to where he was a year ago, he's a very effective back end of the rotation starter. Things are going to get crowded in Peterson's mechanics shop...I sure hope he knows what he's doing.

If you believe in the investment manager long term, the best time to go with him is during a cold streak since most revert to their long term average. Most investors tend to chase performance and get whipsawed. That's one of many reasons Mark is loaded and most other people (including myself) aren't. My guess is that is his philosophy. Melvin is a long term hire and that is not going to change when a few of his bets have gone wrong. If he felt something was structurally broken within the organization that's when he'd make a change in GM. We could debate the long term structure since the criticism on developing pitchers has some validity, but I wouldn't make a change at this point and it doesn't sound like Mark would either.

The DFA vigilantes are getting a little carried away here. I'm as concerned as anyone about Bush's dropoff this year, but the guy was a solid starter until the injury last year. It wasn't unreasonable to think he'd have recovered by now. It does appear he hasn't, but to call Melvin stupid is over-dramatic and wrong IMO.

This is exactly why we need Suppan. We need a guy to sop up useless innings in blowout situations to save the rest of the staff...the opportunities are numerous. Why waste service time and arms of others in May when we're already out of it.

That's a little dramatic to say he's done as a major leaguer, but you are correct...his velocity is down and he can't succeed the way he's been pitching this year. He just hasn't been right. Tough to know if things might have been a little different if the ego behind the plate got strike 3 right.

Further evidence that umpires need to be replaced by computers...Gameday had it as a strike too. The umps union is worse than the players union.

Too bad Vargas has struggled. He was a real bright spot at the end of last year, but he is the likely candidate. He's only 31 so it's not like he's ancient, but he hasn't added much value. Maybe they could find a way to get him to Nashville. It's a higher mental block to release Suppan given his salary. Plus, they do need someone to sop up innings in blowouts...they've sure had enough of them. They could also use an extra starter for another month or so until Davis is back, they know if Parra will stick and we find out if anything is up with Bush (I'm a little wary of him right now, he doesn't appear to be the same). Could also see Estrada go down just because they may not need the extra righty this weekend. Doesn't mean he wouldn't be back in a couple weeks.

I'm not sure if I'm so happy they won, happy they have some new blood coming in actually younger than me (although sadly, Trevor is too...barely) or happy from laughing so hard at this thread...but I am happy.

Great for Lucroy, but a bummer for Zaun. Considering his start, he has been a bright spot for the team. I hope he's back soon.

I completely agree logan. Focusing on hitting early in his tenure gave them a higher chance of success and a foundation from which to build. I think it was the right thing to do as well. They did draft a few pitchers high as well, but outside of Gallardo they've whiffed. It's tough...as you mention, young pitchers have a much higher risk/reward. A couple years from now that picture could change. They are close on some bullpen arms and the starters could come behind them. If things work out, Melvin will get a shot to augment the pitching with some bats instead of augmenting the bats with the aging FA arms. The pitching in the system isn't enough however...you are right. They will need to trade Prince and hopefully he handles that situation well. The market isn't necessarily in his favor with a surplus of 1B and teams highly valuing those young power arms. The only other piece they would likely get value for might be Hart, but that's a question mark. They have little else of value that they would get a return for to make up for what they'd lose, unless they could move some salary. Despite a bunch of payroll coming off next year, attendance will be down as well. As far as Macha is concerned...who cares. I'd rather not spend the money on a replacement, unless they replace him with Bonnie Brewer or someone who would sell tickets.

I remember halfway through 1990 when the wheels came off for Dan Plesac. The guy went from dominant to blowing saves seemingly overnight. He wound up resurrecting his career for over a decade as a decent set-up guy, but he wasn't the same as he was for a few years in the late-90s. He was awesome. The thing that's weird about Hoffman is his velocity is fine and he's not a power pitcher. These other relievers just lose it and it's obvious because their fastball drops a few mph or they blow their arm out. Maybe he is just old. It's not like there is a history of many dominant 42 year old pitchers out there so they all lose it at some point. I don't find anything to hate personally about the guy. He's like all professional athletes. He's competitive and he's got an ego...they have to, especially a guy pitching the ninth inning. It's up to Macha at this point...he'd be crazy to put him out there right now. Hoffman has to earn that spot back or make way for the next guy.
