  1. Seth McClung...you will be missed you big lug. I just loved how that guy embraced being a Brewer. I would love to have him back for some depth, but my guess is Macha wasn't a big fan. He'll always be a true Milwaukee cult hero. I'm sure he'll make a great Brewerfan.net interview some day.
  2. Does anyone know how injury insurance works? Many have speculated a good chunk of the Riske contract was covered by insurance. If Wolf goes and blows his arm out on the first pitch in April, what type of offset could insurance provide for a $29.75MM albatross? Could that be factored into some of the projections or do you just assume the actuaries have it right and there is an ongoing cost of the insurance so it all evens out?
  3. After looking at that website, I think Zaun signed with the Brewers for enhanced access to Remetee shirts.
  4. Now they just need to remove the sun and shadows and they'll be all set...that sounds like an Onion headline.
  5. Lopez seems the only one that would receive at/or less his worth in arbitration. His class B status shouldn't hinder him signing a decent 2 year contract somewhere. I wouldn't mind keeping him since we don't have a legit leadoff hitter that is ready yet (assuming Escobar and/or Gomez may be there at some point and Weeks would be better in a different spot) and he's very flexible position wise...that may not be worth the money ($5mm?) when they are so desparate for pitching. I'd ditch Looper...we already are paying Suppan, no reason to have 2 of the same guy when we are already financially committed to Soup. Counsell and Vargas will likely come back too.
  6. Makes you wonder what McGwire will look like when he finally resurfaces this spring.
  7. With $14mm off the books now for 2010 and an additional $20mm off in 2011, this could open up some pitchers that otherwise may not have been available to us. We could offer some backend loaded 2-3 year deals instead one year plus an option types. It could help avoid guys like Looper (who I hope we don't resign), but raises the risk of another Suppan-like contract if it doesn't work out.
  8. Safe to say that JJ will get a better reception when he returns to Wisconsin than certain other former state heroes now on the wrong side of the Mississippi.
  9. No reason for him to agree to that. He'd get more from a team if they don't have to cough up a pick. I'm going to miss Cam, he's been a true favorite the last couple years. A total class act and a joy to watch in CF. DM certainly has a good idea of what JJ is worth on the market. The surprise to us is...he's not worth that much. The Crew needs the cash for pitching. This frees up a bunch. If they don't upgrade at Catcher...the 6-9 spots in the order are going to be awfully tough. Escobar may wind up leading off a year before he's ready.
  10. It's unreal how big of a story the horrendous umpiring has been. I could care less who wins, despite being in SoCal, but the guys in blue are the obvious losers. I'd have to put MLB Umpires right up there with the BCS as far as least favorite things in sports right now...oh yeah, I almost forgot that unnamed QB in purple.
  11. I heard the podcast and liked it as well. He seems like he's a big coffee drinker like Ned...the guy has some energy. He mentioned things like averages for different areas of the strike zone and how few pitchers have "swing and miss" pitches (big issue for our pitchers). I don't know if he's right, but there appears to be some thought and analysis beyond the old baseball maxims behind his work. I've also heard some quirky stories on the guy, like havng Chris Carpenter in the minors and making him work on his mechanics in the shower. I hope he doesn't do that with Coffey...someone could get hurt with him charging across the wet floor in the locker room.
  12. The umpiring in these series has been a travesty. I'm all for replacing these arrogant overpaid imbeciles with computer and cameras. These ball/strike calls have been particularly bad tonight.
  13. While sabermetrics and moneyball philosophies have helped scouts evaluate many hitters more appropriately (although many still rely more on "tools"), most scouts rely way too much on the old radar gun for pitching. If he's got a different take...I'm game. Whatever we've been doing hasn't helped.
  14. Agree wholeheartedly with that. A one year deal for Lopez would be manageable without worrying about the long term baggage. I could even see starting him in LF and moving Braun to RF. Deal Hart for pitching. It also allows them to bring him back to the IF if Rickie struggles to get healthy. He'd be valuable IF insurance with Gerut ready as a 4th OF. I also think Alcides could be our lead off hitter down the road, but in his rookie year may be better off at 8th (assuming Kendall is gone) or 9th (as a second leadoff with pitcher hitting 8th). Lopez also allows them to drop Rickie down into a more natural 2nd or even 5th or 6th.
  15. Are the Cubs moving to Canada?
  16. Despite all the banter back and forth...you all did better than TH in assigning grades. Kendall a C? Get off the clubhouse Kool-Aid, the guy was a D- at best (and that's giving him the benefit of the doubt and credit for playing so much). Also couldn't understand being so harsh on Bush. The guy had a bad year, but he was hurt. I'd rather take my shot with a cheaper, better, healthy Bush than Looper. At least Bush was adequate late last year and early this year before he got hurt. He's also the only NL Central pitcher to win a playoff game since 2006 (ok, maybe that last part should be blueish).
  17. No doubt...the guy is the worst umpire in baseball by a long shot. Unbelievable that MLB would allow him to ump a playoff game.
  18. Take that Minnesota...may this only be the beginning of the pain that A-Rod(s) put on the state of Minnesota!!!
  19. Letting Kendall go can only help. Even if our minor league guys are a year away, they can't be any worse than Kendall at the plate. Cam is another story. Cam in CF and moving Braun out of the infield were by far the biggest contributors to a much better defense the last two seasons. Our starting pitching got killed in 2007 from the extra 8-10 pitches a game with all the errors they were piling up. The collateral damage of replacing Cam in CF with Gerut would be meaningful on an already subpar pitching staff. If we can get him for a reasonable price for a year or two until the youngsters are ready, I'd do it. There are other ways to come up with pitching...trading 2/3 between JJ, Hart and McGahee and signing a couple lower priced FAs has to be an upgrade.
  20. May the Buckner-esque meltdown from the Baseball Cops send them into a 20 year tailspin ala the Red Sox. With every comment that comes out of a Cardinals fan/player's mouth, I like them less and less. "Baseball's best fans?" meh.
  21. May this just be the start of one awesome sports weekend. Untuckem!!!
  22. 12 unanswered runs...why do I crave George Webb's. More importantly, do they deliver to Los Angeles?
  23. How gutless are the Cards pitching around Prince in a laugher. Pathetic.
  24. This is funny. If these guys play like this next week it will be an 08 Cubsesque 3 and out.
  25. Take that you lazy butt Molina!!!!! Braunie you are awesome!!!
