  1. This is somewhat true but keep in mind the Yankees were outbid by the Pirates on Martin this year. They didn't go after any of the top FAs even though the team has tons of holes in it. The changes to the game have been making an impact. There is more parity in baseball right now than there even has been, probably as much as football to be honest. Depends on the players. The issue with our farm system is it is so young there is no way to know what we do have yet. Hart and Gallardo weren't all stars back when they were drafted either.
  2. Since all they did was quote 'sources' this means nothing at all. Sources said Braun showed he could reproduce a false positive, ESPN didn't choose to run that because they are greedy little jerks who just want to get press.
  3. Yeah pitching WAR is a pretty tricky subject in general. He seems like a pretty average guy though. I don't have any problems at all just going with all the young guys. Just don't think the team is in a bad place when Narveson is the #5 either. A lot of teams would love him as a #5.
  4. I haven't had a defense of Manny Parra in like 6 years. He simply was not the same guy he was before the injuries. My only defense of him is it isn't some mental block, it is a talent block. As for Narveson I'm not exactly a fan of his or anything, I just go by what the numbers tell me. If he pitches a full season he is a 2 WAR player and he has pitched just like a 2 WAR player for 2 years now. WAR is a counting stat so yes not playing a full season matters, if he gets 32 starts he is sitting right at 2 WAR both years. If you are going to compare him to #5's though he is well above average as a #5. I thought we were comparing him to pitchers as a whole. He is the wrong type of pitcher for our team and park though. Flyball pitchers who don't have elite Ks are always going to struggle on our team. If he played in SD or SF people would be all over him as a #3 type starter. Instead he pitches here so he is apparently garbage. His 4.20ish career xFIP/FIP probably paints the picture of his true talent. His 4.70ish career ERA probably paints about what he will do when put into a situation that doesn't really fit his style which is where we will have him. He will give up too many HR in our park. I'm not sure where the snarky attitude comes from. I'm the last person in the world that is going to defend a player if the stats don't agree with my argument. There are plenty of posters on this site that wield stats as a weapon only showing the stats that agree with their opinion, I'm certainly not one of them.
  5. That lefties thing is almost certainly just a fluke like it almost always is. I suspect he is probably even against RHP and LHP at best in the future. Having said that Overbay shouldn't be on a major league roster at this point.
  6. Red Sox acquired Carp so you can cross his name off the list.
  7. Pitching is harder to judge since we haven't developed much of it. Gallardo was certainly not given a cautious approach having pitched under 200 innings above A ball. Parra came up pretty fast but injuries kind of derailed his career so he isn't much of a case study.
  8. This is very disingenuous. His last 2 healthy years are 1.6 WAR and 1.8 WAR and they are both partial seasons. He is exactly league average. If he were a FA he would get a raise and a substantial one.
  9. I want some of what you are smoking. The Brewers rushed almost every single young player they have had. Fielder was brought up too soon, Weeks was up too soon, Hardy was rushed. Braun was probably rushed though that one worked out. If there is anything I think about the team it certainly isn't that they are cautious with young talent ala St Louis.
  10. You are simply grossly underrating Narveson. He is the same type of pitcher as say Edwin Jackson who people are asking us to sign, only he plays for a lot less money. He is as good as Rick Porcello who people want us to trade for. He is as good as Mark Buehrle which teams have grossly overpaid for. He is better than Phil Hughes or Clay Buchholtz or Ervin Santana who teams have spent way too much money to pitch for them etc. Narveson is a super cheap league average pitcher albeit with a recent injury which could derail that, but that is still a rare commodity.
  11. This entire process has just proven that journalists have no integrity left and that ESPN should die in a fire for being grubby little rating whores.
  12. Hart came up as a 1B in the minors so I don't see why anyone would have thought it would be hard on him.
  13. Narveson is a league average pitcher. Not exactly something you just toss away. Stick him in SF and people probably call him a #2 since his big headache is the longball.
  14. Probably speaking to the .592 OPS he put up in 2011 and .630 in 2012. Those are worse numbers than you'd expect from using Gonzalez there.
  15. Oh please no. These guys haven't been viable players for the past 2 seasons, what makes you think they will be now. Just an awful idea to sign either of these guys. If we sign either of these guys I'll start to agree with the Melvin has to go group.
  16. I should hope LaPorta would be more or less free at this point. He hasn't shown any ability to be a major league player having been below replacement level for over 1000 PA.
  17. If you are going to look at it like that then 99% of all FA signings will be failures. It isn't easy to win a world series even if you have the best team which Phi did at least one of those years. The goal is getting to the playoffs, once you do that you can win it all even if you aren't the best team. That should be painfully obvious if you look at who has won it the past 5 years now, since it hasn't been the best team very often. A stable rotation could very well put this Brewer team in the playoffs. It wouldn't be a bad move, it wouldn't be an amazing move, it would be an ok move.
  18. Well the Halladay and Lee comment aside which makes no real sense since they both have put up elite stats overall for PHI, yeah I'm fine with it. I'm not giddy about it, I'm not begging them to sign him, I'm just fine with it. It fits a very obvious need we have which is short term rotational depth, it does it with a guy who should put up 2-2.5 WAR most likely. In 8 full seasons as a starter he has put up over 2 WAR every year but one which was 1.8 and gone over 3 WAR three different times. That makes him roughly a league average to slightly above average SP. That is why the money being low is very key, the draft pick really has to drive down his price.
  19. Lohse is fine as long as it is 1 or 2 year deal that is undervalued since you lose a draft pick. I don't see them really going for that type of deal but if they are desperate enough and sign at like 2 years, $18M or something I'm honestly ok with it. Lohse is a better pitcher than Suppan or Looper were but it is the same type of bad fit. You don't' want guys like that on a mediocre to bad defensive team in a HR hitters park.
  20. He has a bad shoulder and doesn't really fit a need since he is left handed so isn't really the OF depth guy we need either. I'd pass on him.
  21. It is a prospect, you have to just wait and see. People threw a big hissy fit when I said I didn't think LaPorta would amount to anything either or when I said losing Will Inman was no big loss etc. I was not high on Lincecum as an ace and then he developed his change up which is by far his best pitch and why he was so good. Prospects aren't easy to predict and on average they are overrated by their fanbase. Unless Bauer changes something in how he currently pitches I don't see him becoming a star. It is up to him to change something. From everything I've heard about him it isn't likely that change will come easy as he is extremely stubborn.
  22. That is because they warn them before they test them. It is really hard to get busted in the NFL where cheating is basically ignored. I'm sorry but just because the NFL doesn't get press doesn't mean it is clean. Steroids are completely rampant in that sport.
  23. I'd take Bauer in an instant over anybody we have right now except for Gallardo and maybe Peralta. You are way underselling Trevor Bauer's potential. His mechanics might be odd, but odd pitching mechanics never seemed to slow Luis Tiant, or Tim Lincecum. I think Bauer has 1/2 potential. And I was floored when the Diamondbacks let him go. We shall see. I've found very little praise about him. Most put him up in prospect listings quoting that they feel they have to put him there. He has never shown any ability to repeat his delivery or control his pitches. If they get him to change his delivery so he can repeat his mechanics maybe he'll realize that potential but the minors are littered with high upside poor control guys who never made it.
  24. Fiers only throws in the high 80s so he can't be good apparently. Joking aside Fiers is likely a low to mid 4 ERA pitcher but his skills haven't stabilized enough to know for sure. It will all depend on whether the league adjusts to his off-speed stuff or not since his fastball isn't good enough to live off of.
  25. No it wasn't. I posted before the season that I was worried about the bullpen. It had no depth at all to it and I thought we were going to really struggle in the middle innings. There was no reason at all to trade Axford last year.
