  1. I would like to think I'd find much better reasons to respect the manager than whether or not he potentially put a guy on base for free in a big game when it wasn't going to do any good. Very few managers in the game throw at people anymore because it just doesn't do anything anymore.
  2. I don't have even a tiny bit of a problem with them not throwing at guys in that series. Throwing at someone wouldn't have changed a thing about how it played out, not even a tiny little bit. I do have an issue with us not crowding the plate the same way they did though when it became completely obvious they weren't going to give anything on the inside. Part of the issue is that the Cardinals have better hitters than we did though. Too many of our hitters on that team hit the same way in every situation against every pitcher, no adaptability at all.
  3. I'm pretty indifferent to him myself but I don't see this at all. Macha was pretty much a complete boob and Yost is probably the worst in game manager in the history of the game. Roenicke is just completely vanilla. He does dumb things from time to time but they are the same dumb things most managers do unlike Yost who does dumb things even mediocre managers don't do.
  4. Will Carroll also said there was more to the story and that Braun's side could reproduce the results of why the test failed. But ESPN and MLB blasted Braun so much that they don't want to report anything positive about him. http://www.chadmoriyama.com/2012/02/ryan-braun-what-you-dont-know-about-his-case-is-important/
  5. The answer to part 1 is two fold. #1 the umps were not calling the inside corner for a strike so they couldn't pitch inside. Over and over and over again they called balls on clear strikes on the inside corner. #2 the umps warned them about throwing at players so the Brewers played scared of getting a SP tossed since they had no depth. The answer to part 2 is because it was a crappy FA list for pitchers and we had no need for a hitter. I do wish we had picked up better bench guys though. Our bench is pretty awful and has no depth at all.
  6. I think pitchers are much harder to read so I don't know what they will be. I could see us having an ace pitcher emerge out of that bunch, I could see them all end up being #5's or bullpen guys. You just never know with pitching. As for position players we have sort of a gap between almost ready mediocre guys and really young flawed guys. I mean if Morris develops some plate patience he becomes a really good prospect. Guys like Ozuna and Walla look like they could be good but it is so hard to judge players that are that young. There isn't much super star talent coming though, I can agree with that. Then again the last group of star talented prospects we had has largely been a failure. Lawrie is the last hope of that group and he is making his name with his defense of all things so far. That really unfortunate year where Sabathia and Sheets both didn't bring back the picks they should have really hurt.
  7. Results oriented thinking isn't helpful at all though. They put out rosters capable of making the playoffs for an extended period of time. Both rosters that did make the playoffs had enough talent to make it to a world series, just both times the pitching tanked once we got there. That is what teams are looking to do. Melvin's failures have been more in weak FA Signings than anything else. While people hate most of his trades there haven't been very many that look bad a few years later so it is hard for me to nick him on it much. These next couple years are going to be really tricky because so much of what we do is tied into how quickly the young pitchers become good players.
  8. If Melvin traded players anywhere near the rate you people want he would have lost his fanbase years ago. Someone has a good year trade him ASAP and play for 2 years from now! STAT! Last years bullpen was mediocre at best going into the season, trading Axford would have just been foolish. The team was a playoff caliber team so trading Hart would have required a perfect deal giving back a major league quality player which just isn't that likely. I know it is cool to second guess every move we make and take the hindsight is 20/20 view on most of them but it just gets old after a while. If we had played for 2014 either of the past 2 years Melvin should have been fired given the core of the team we had and how competitive the roster is and the time left on the high end talents contracts.
  9. Stick him somewhere like Tampa and Norris has a 3.50 ERA. Stick him in a hitters park with a putrid defense behind him and he has the erratic ERA he has shown so far. Unfortunately we are closer to the hitters park and putrid defense side of the discussion so not sure he is the greatest fit.
  10. The Brewers payroll will go up. They haven't spent a lot of money this off season because there is no reason to spend much. We are set at every position and they decided to go with young pitching instead of old vets. So no an average player won't take up 15% of our payroll.
  11. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/fantasy/dc/ PECOTA came out and it pegs the Brewers at 79 wins with the 2nd most runs allowed in the NL. So if the pitching is better than a heavily regressed projection system suggests we are at the 83ish wins that I think is the true talent of the team.
  12. He is a better defensive CF than Gomez, he carries a better OBP, he is a better baserunner. The only thing that Gomez does better than Bourn is hit for power. To be honest Gomez is an inferior player to Bourn but he is younger and that is a huge huge thing given the limited skillset of these guys.
  13. Those are probably things he isn't supposed to talk about though as they directly relate to the case. I don't know, I think you just have unreal expectations on what he can or should talk about here.
  14. If I have to choose between watching NBA, Golf or seeing which players show up to spring training in great shape or overweight I'll gladly follow the baseball. The reason this is a big deal is because this is the crappiest month of sports the entire year. March is great though with the college hoops and spring training and I'll probably even watch some WBC.
  15. Pitchers have to start pitching off the plate on Gomez in an effort to avoid his power and he has to actually take the walks when they do it in order for him to be worth a big deal. As long as his OBP stays where it is he isn't going to get this kind of deal even with the power.
  16. Well yeah that would be nice since obviously there is upside in guys who can strike out tons of guys. Sometimes they get the control and sometimes they don't. Sometimes they fix their mechanics so they can find a consistent release point and sometimes they don't. I just don't think he is the can't miss type prospect that people seem to make him out to be. The DBacks got a terrible return for him for sure though, can't really argue that.
  17. Bauer's mechanics are awful and it is going to lead to a life of control problems. I think he is going to be an Oliver Perez type. Maybe he squeaks out a couple of great years but he wont' be consistently good. There was a method behind them trading him and it wasn't just a quirky start to his major league career or not liking the throwing program, they recognized long term issues he is going to have.
  18. I don't think Bauer becomes more than a #5 starter so we probably see that deal a lot differently.
  19. Very odd choice. I would DFA Stubbs if I were them to be honest which makes that trade seem extra awful~.
  20. We have very different opinions on this. If he were out there churning away talking about his innocence every chance he got, I'd assume he was guilty. We don't know what happened, we aren't going to know what happened until maybe after he retires. He is not allowed to give more info and the arbiter is not allowed to give more info and MLB either can't talk about it or isn't giving more info. We have nothing but shady statements on BOTH sides about what happened. We have next to no info on how any of this went down from any source. So you are basically going to be left to your own devices on whether you are going to believe him, not believe him or take what I think is the most reasonable stance and that is... I don't know what happened.
  21. Yeah at this point it seems like people are just sticking their fingers in their ears and trying to ignore the facts. Braun is not allowed to give the info you want to hear, it just is not an option. You will have to deal with the fact that he can't give you what you want even if it is the truth which we obviously don't know at this point.
  22. There is no guarantee he wasn't using something in the past and there is no guarantee he isn't using something now. And there is no guarantee that if he was using that it had much to do with how he played anyway. They have really struggled to show proof that these lower grade PED even help much.
  23. Here is the series of events. Braun takes drug test. Drug test is not handled properly and chain of custody is not kept properly. This is the 1st failure. Drug test gets to lab past the time it should have and is still tested... at this point it should have just been tossed out as tainted. This is the 2nd failure. Results of drug test are leaked to media. This is the 3rd failure. Media attacks Braun mercilessly without even a tiny bit of benefit of the doubt. The 4th failure Braun appeals and wins with the arbiter saying he can't give the details. Media attacks Braun some more saying it is nothing bet a technicality without knowing the details. The 5th failure. MLB fires the arbiter. The 6th failure. Balco south story comes out with the media releasing it only releasing names they could corroborate somehow. Main stream media gets a hold of info and instantly leaks it without any corroboration. The 7th failure. Braun gives his statement and the media says it is silly without doing any research or anything. The 8th failure. MLB and ESPN look awful given this series of events. Regardless of whether Braun is guilty or not guilty MLB and the media have totally screwed this all up and lost any sense of credibility they had with me. The system failed at almost every single step in the process because they wanted the ratings and they wanted to try to make an example out of Braun.
  24. Yeah I assume that Braun probably is guilty but the actual proceeds since the leak have been a complete joke and make MLB look awful. I don't believe for 1 second that they would admit that he cooperated and showed proof that he did consult Bosh. They will do everything they possibly can to hide anything that makes Braun look clean. ESPN will do the exact same since they attacked him so strongly.
  25. I dunno. I look at that list and just see a lot of wasted money on bad contracts more than anything that makes me think the Brewers 'can't compete'. I'll be shocked if any of those open contracts return value in any way. Cliff Lee would be the one that might. ARod's first one probably did. Good trades and smart drafting along with aggressive extensions to young talent seem to be the way to build teams now. FA is usually just a disaster.
