  1. the squeeze play is so situational that I don't think there is a good way to judge when it is correct to use it or not. It depends on the defense, the runner, the hitter, how the current pitcher is pitching, the specific type of pitch you are expecting, the hitter on deck etc. I think it is usually too risky to go with but I just can't come up with a good way to quantify when the risk is worth it.
  2. My guess is he hits under .250 this year, but with nice power and below average defense if they don't wise up and move him out of CF since Crisp is way better than him.
  3. To be fair Estrada did show a completely different skill set last year that suggests real growth from him, it wasn't just some flukey lucky ERA or something.
  4. Each of the past 3 seasons the Brewers have had the best looking team health report before the season. The Brewers don't usually take risks on injury prone players and the other teams do. Health is a skill and they have one of the better thought of medical staffs in baseball s well. This isn't some fluke that the team tends to stay healthy. The Cardinals are an extremely high risk team so they are going to live or die by the injury this year.
  5. To be fair you are finding ways for the Reds to gain about 15 wins compared to the other teams, it isn't going to be a fair comparison no matter what with them. It takes a huge leap of faith in the Reds to assume they have any chance to compete this year, I'm not saying the leap of faith isn't warranted mind you but the logical argument based on last season is there is no way they should win the division. Cardinals vs the Brewers is going to be really subjective though, no way to get around that.
  6. I'd be surprised if you could find a team in baseball that I can't speak intelligently about at least 80% of their roster(well maybe the Mariners/A's!), especially teams in the division. I don't like Berkman's chance to repeat what he did last year, I think Furcal's years as a quality SS are behind him though he won't be a black hole or anything. I expect some regression from Lohse (though obviously game 1 makes that look bad!). It is a good team but I don't think they were a legit 90 win team last year and I think they tread water at best in the off season. I think it is a 3 team race that is going to be decided by the small margins that are so hard to project. How does Gamel do, how healthy do the Cardinals stay, Can any of the non Cueto/Latos Reds pitchers be productive this year etc. When I say something like I think the Brewers are an 88 win team it is like saying they will win 80-96 games, the margin of error is just huge in baseball.
  7. Mike Fontenot should not really play SS, I think I'd rather have Izturis than him to be honest.
  8. Any reason for this, I haven't seen anything at all that suggests this.
  9. I tend to agree JB12 though I think the team has kind of put themselves into a weird position where they feel they need to keep Greinke to stay competitive until the next wave of prospects reach AA/AAA. Since they have pulled 3M in attendance I think they are going to try to keep a winning team on the field as long as they can to keep that number up. I'd much rather pay big money for Greinke rather than extend Marcum.
  10. Even when a manager does something boneheaded a lot of times there is some logical reason for it. Whether someone has a little injury that made them unavailable or was just sick or there was something in the scouting report that we aren't aware of etc. The manager has to consistently do things that bother me like Yost's general bullpen management for me to really dislike them. Starting Kotsay so much last year got Roenicke off on a bad note for me but the rest of the season he was at least adequate.
  11. The price will go through the roof if they don't do the deal now though. When he comes out with Cy Young stats again this year he is going to get a huge paycheck for it.
  12. Baseball as a whole is getting smarter about defense and that includes 1B. Good but not great hitters with horrible defense just aren't finding jobs like they used to. Elite hitters with horrible defense like Fielder are still getting over payed though.
  13. This used to be true but there are a ton of really crappy 1B in the league right now. It is nowhere near as strong a position as it used to be. I don't think it is easy to replace 1B at all in a league where Kotchman and LaHaire are starting.
  14. If the Reds GM proves that he is unable to field a competitive team around Votto then this is a bad move for the Reds. I like this move for the Reds very much for the next 5 seasons, but after that it starts to go down hill. It will be interesting to follow the Reds attendance over the next few seasons. I believe that the Reds TV contract is up in 2016 and they will be able to negotiate a new one between now and then, so it will be interesting to see how much that increases. i agree but on the other hand the Reds have one of the weakest draws in baseball so itis really easy to see how signing Vott could screw them long term.
  15. Greinke is the better pitcher, Cain has had better results. Just depends on which thing you go for. Cain has played in one of the better pitcher parks in baseball, in the weakest hitting division in baseball and with pretty decent defenses behind him. Greinke pitched most of his games in the AL and all of them with one of the worst defenses in baseball behind him.
  16. Rosenthal commented on MLB.tv that he was surprised by the deal because the Reds don't draw like the Brewers and they don't have a very good TV deal so he isn't sure the Reds can support a competitive team to put around him. I'm guessing those two have had some sort of disagreement on this or something, seems odd that they both decided to reference the Brewers in opposite ways~.
  17. The Brewers could have afforded it for Votto, he is just a better player than Fielder especially for an NL team.
  18. I'd blame the craptastic strike zone we were given and our pitchers complete inability to adjust to it more than the manager.
  19. I was serious that I think Wolf is most likely the problem and not Lucroy. I think he has been pretty good with us and I even defended his contract when everyone complained about it, I like Wolf as a personality too. I think he still is the one making this an issue and not Lucroy though. Lucroy doesn't have problems with other pitchers and it seems like Wolf got frustrated really fast with Lucroy, it probably didn't hurt that he was struggling so Lucroy gave him an easy out to blame whether it was warranted or not.
  20. I think Wolf is a crybaby personally.
  21. I'm not sure the Cardinals were a 90 win talent team either though, it took a heroic run late in the season to sneak up to that 90 wins and it seemed pretty flukey. Kind of like the Rockies a few years back who followed it up with a huge dip in wins the next season.
  22. Nope, not that either. Nothing he has done suggests he has the type of talent to be a HOF caliber player. He would need to take a big step up in contact rate or plate discipline. You are just splitting hairs anyway, you could probably say any 22 year has potential HOF talent and find some way to justify it since it really has no meaning.
  23. 1/4 season of AB against minor league callups and half a season in AAA at age 21 does not a HOF career make. I think you are wildly overstating his potential. He is an all star potential talent, not a HOF talent. Only 2 of his 9 HR last year came off of major league quality pitchers (unless you count Guthrie and then it is 3~). He mostly feasted on the Coleman, Cassevah, Jacubauskas, Vandenhurk quality pitchers last year, the same guys he was facing in AAA pretty much. I expect Lawrie to be a good major league hitter but it is way too soon to consider him a HOF talent.
  24. If the offense doesn't collapse in the 2nd half and Sheets doesn't get hurt we had a roster with a real shot at the world series, can't really gloss over that important detail either. We were also very likely to get two very good picks after the season to retool with but that obviously didn't work out as planned because everything went exactly wrong.
  25. Well if people are trying to compare Bruce to Hart then it isn't of course to everyone~. Bruce's downside is Hart, his upside is very very high.
