  1. I'd rather have Wolf than Penny so hopefully we go that path.
  2. Kotteras is the 4th best C on the team now, I imagine we just dump him now that we got Zaun.
  3. He started for the Orioles until they brought up Weiters which made him the backup. They then traded him to the Rays who had Navarro who split time with him.
  4. If his OBP stays where it has been the 2 last years he'll still be an above average hitter. OPS is a nice stat but it really undervalues OBP. If the deal were for more I could see it being bad but $9M a year is not really a ton for an above average player. He has put up $9M in all but 1 of his last 6 seasons. They might regret the 4th year of the deal but other than that I have no problem with it.
  5. If he keeps up his BB rate and defense from the last 2 seasons this is a really good deal, if he reverts to 2007 it isn't a disaster. Seems reasonable to me.
  6. Another link to catcher's defense. http://baseballanalysts.com/archives/fx_visualizatio_1/ Zaun rated as the best C in baseball at blocking pitches in the dirt over the past 3 seasons.
  7. I think bring up Lucroy to sit him on the bench is a waste as well though so I don't know that we do have cheaper options. I'd much rather go with Rivera as the backup and bring up Lucroy mid season to get his feet wet after playing full time in AAA for a couple months. I'm really fine with whatever they do but I don't think JB12's idea is a bad one.
  8. Fielder is going to DH a couple games and whatever player fills in for him at 1B isn't likely to be much more than a bench type. Don't really see the issue with it being Rivera.
  9. It wouldn't bother me at all. It really woudn't be a full season of 3 C on the roster either. At the start of the year Lucroy would likely be in the minors with 2 C on the roster since there are extra days off etc. In the middle of the season you have interleague games so Rivera can play some 1B and let Fielder DH some. At the end of the season the roster expands and there is plenty of room. At some point in the middle of the season Zaun is likely to get banged up and miss some time given his history and when that happened it would only be 2 as well.
  10. This system thinks he is pretty average defensively... http://www.drivelinemecha...efense-filling-in. It has Kendall as one of the worst in baseball last year which I agree with actually. This one has him above average... http://www.beyondtheboxsc...o-capture-catcher. It also has Kendall as one of the worst in baseball. I'd say this is a significant upgrade over Kendall but might just be a side grade to the other options. I can't see how it is a bad thing though given the inexperience of the other options.
  11. Yes we would have. Bush is as good as the majority of the FA we are likely to find for SP. We still should have offered to Lopez though, even if he accepts and we get stuck with him it would be nice to have the depth. Offer him arbitration, tell him Weeks is still the starter if healthy, there is almost no chance he accepts it.
  12. Escobar was not a viable option going into 2009 so if that was the plan it was a bad one. Now trading Hardy and picking up a 1 year SS might have worked assuming we found the right deal which is harder than people seem to think it is.
  13. I disagree with the majority of people about the majority of subjects so it won't surprise me if everyone hates Selig. People tend to place too much of the blame on the single individual and ignore the moves he made that were good or at least reasonable and single out the things he did that they don't specifically like. I mean someone who doesn't like the all star game deciding home field advantage is just giving an opinion, but in their mind Selig is a monster for making the change. The reality is the change wasn't caused just by him alone or anything, it is way more political than that. It also isn't clearly wrong or right, it is completely subjective.
  14. I am not a big fan of Selig the owner because I think he purposely let the team fall apart in order to push his agenda. I think Selig the commissioner did a pretty darn good job though.
  15. C - decent defense, get on base some from bottom of the lineup 1B - lots of power 2B - good defense, some OBP SS - good defense, offense is a plus 3B - decent power RF - good pop, some defense LF - very good offense CF - very good defense Pitchers #1 - 3.50 or lower ERA #2 - 4.00 or lower ERA #3 - 4.50 or lower ERA #4 - 4.75 or lower ERA #5 - 5.25 or lower ERA That is off the top of my head with very little thought put into it.
  16. We signed Capuano again too so that makes 2 SP. Melvin is probably done.
  17. No different than judging a pitcher by ERA or a hitter by OPS, those are highly inconsistent season to season in general. A single season is too small a sample to judge any aspect of a baseball player. I agree that defensive metrics are at a bit less of an advanced stage than hitting or pitching but it isn't useless either.
  18. He did have surgery on both of his knees and then had the 2nd most walks in the NL the next season.
  19. Think about the type of trade it would take for us to trade Gallardo, you are talking something relatively close to that for Johnson. A little bit less because he has fewer years left but he also is coming off of a better season.
  20. As long as the deal is short I'd be ok with it.
  21. Weeks made great strides in 2008, people just didn't seem to notice it for some reason. He maintained those strides in 2009, he is pretty close to an average 2B now imo, though more range than reliability. I think if Lowe were a free agent this year he easily could be the #2 SP on the market, that is just how horrible the market is this season, I'd certainly rather have him than the Washburn and Davis's of the world. I wouldn't want to take him on at that contract obviously, but he is a pretty good target for Melvin if they get the right deal.
  22. I'm not counting Hall because there was never any hype over him in the first place. We had 5 big hitting prospects coming up, 2 became super stars(Braun, Fielder), 2 have had some injury problems and a mixture of good and bad years(Hardy, Weeks) and one who wasn't as hyped as the rest has been medoicre to average over his stint with us so far(Hart). Seems pretty normal to me. The fact all of them because at least servicable major leaguers is pretty darn impressive. All 5 of them have had at least one season of 2 WAR or better. I'm thinking people had unreal expectations if they are upset over how this group of 5 ended up. If the next group of 5 does as well we'll be in pretty darn good shape. It isn't easy rebuilding a team that only had 3 major league quality hitters on it and thats what we had as recently as 6 years ago(2003).
  23. I don't expect him to be any better than Looper next year, so if we sign him it better be cheap.
  24. Pretty sure Halladay didn't win anything? Oh you mean the best pitcher in the NL who pitches in a huge pitchers park and faces the weakest offenses in baseball.
  25. Utley plays gold glove caliber defense, that pretty much puts him over Fielder who improved but is still average at best. Zimmerman should certainly be up there in the top 5 or 6. Law's ballot looks pretty decent though I think he has Fielder too low.
