  1. He did get 2 hits last september so he did get a hit in a Brewers uniform.
  2. He seems to be having a power breakout but he still is popping out too much and striking out too much and isn't taking his walks. I'm not sure in the end that it will be some huge breakout instead of a minor one.
  3. They did it with Fielder and that was a season with lesser expectations than this one.
  4. I think all of this mental makeup stuff is just in peoples heads~ Parra is having problems throwing strikes, there is nothing mental about it other than maybe trying to overthrow a little which is as much physical as mental.
  5. However Hoffman seems to be the loyal type so if he does well this year it isn't all that unlikely that he'd be willing to stay around another year.
  6. Ludwick officially hit the DL which means they will be without him and Ankiel when we face them.
  7. The Pirates have a few players but they aren't really close to a playoff team yet, they still have massive holes. The Reds do have a lot of good young talent but I still think they are a year away and Baker will cost them a couple games.
  8. Not worried at all, that is not a good lineup and I don't expect their pitching to hold up. They might scratch their way over .500 but it will take a lot of luck for them to be in the playoff picture.
  9. He is RH and the last thing we need is a RH player. I'm really confused by why people keep wanting to bring in another RH off the bench. McGehee has shown that we just don't need that at all. Almost every single PH chance well get this season will be against a RH pitcher and barring injury we shouldn't be resting our regulars against a LH pitcher.
  10. The other funny thing about Cub fans is they seem to think Braun is a horrible fielder when he is right about average, if you wanted to list the worst fielders in LF Braun wouldn't even make the top 5 list and very well may beat out Soriano depending on how much his arm offsets his terrible fielding in any given year, which they seem to be in denial about.
  11. To be fair I don't think there is anything to worry about long term. Last year he gave up a few extra HR on a bad team and most of them were on the road and not at home. Most of his peripherals pointed at him still being very successful.
  12. Maybe not this good but he is for real. BPro had him at a 4.01 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP and they are pretty conservative with minor league ERA. His peripherals fully support most of what he has done so far.
  13. I agree for sure. We have a quality closer, we have a strong option in CV for times when we have a lot of lefties/switch hitters up. We have a strong option vs LH with stetter who can also get out marginal RH fine so can get out a PH unlike Shouse. We have DiFelice who seems very solid so far and Coffey who really kills pure RH setups. On top of all that we got McClung who is a bit hit or miss but when he has it is very strong so can be used in those 2-3 run type games where you can ditch him if he is not throwing stikes. Finally a lot of those guys can go 2 IP if needed which means we can use fewer RP per game. Last year almost every RP worried me but this year only a couple do and Macha seems to only be using them in low pressure situations. Then you add on top of all that the fact that Yost was terrible at maximizing a bullpen and Macha seems to have a clue. I really like where we are headed in that area.
  14. Gonna give some props to Macha here for really understanding his bullpen. CV is by far the best guy they have against switch hitters(outside of hoffman) because of how dominant his change up is. This was the perfect time to use CV and then next inning you go with Coffey or DiFelice to cut down the righties. By the end of the year Parra will be our 2nd best starter. He is throwing strikes now and while he gave up 3 runs early a lot of it was just weak grounders finding holes. He really does have #2 potential and should easily be a #3 at worst once he gets in more innings.
  15. Why would we want a RH backup OF when we have 3 RH starting OF and a viable emergency OF in Hall who is RH as well not to mention most teams saving their LH pitchers for Fielder. There are very few times during a game that we would want a RH as a PH and in those rare cases we have McGehee and Rivera (when he's healthy).
  16. I'll agree with the others, Duffy can play CF and is a viable defensive replacement while Nelson gives you the same basic skill set as Catalanotto. I'd be shocked if it was Duffy that goes down and not Nelson. However on the other hand I'll say that Nelson has looked better hitting than Duffy. Duffy has swung at a ton of really terrible pitches. Nelson has shown pretty good strike zone judgment but has had problems actually making contact with the ball when he does swing and has displayed warning track power instead of HR power. At this point I'm pretty sure that with 500 AB that Nelson would put up better stats than Duffy, but Catalanotto very well might put up better stats than either of them.
  17. Weeks is the only one really improved on defense this year. I think we were a slightly above average defense last year though.
  18. I think nobody wants to give him full time ABs vs RH hitters is the real reason. He is waiting for someone to get hurt and a team to NEED him to come play full time.
  19. Because he won't keep up the 1.269 OPS he has against lefties all year and his stats against RHP is still pretty miserable this year and that is with the extra walks that I think are more of a fluke from pitchers being wild in April. This is still a replacement level player against RHP.
  20. I think we got the same Bill Hall pretty much, unfortunately~ Last year we had CV, Torres, Shouse and that was pretty much it for dependable guys. Mota and Gagne had stints where they were ok but I never really felt comfortable with them coming in the game. Hoffman is also an upgrade over Torres as the closer, last year was just a HR fluke more than anything, his xFIP was actually better than in 2006 or 2007 This year I have faith in CV, Hoffman, Stetter, DiFelice and Coffey. I think we just have a lot more depth than last season.
  21. We scored 4.94 R/G in 2007 with a lineup that probably wasn't as good as we had last year or this year. We were at 4.82 R/G before that horrid September last year as well. If I were a betting man I would have put us around 4.7-4.9 R/G going into the season since we have more younger guys than older guys. The pitching is probably about where I would expect it as well. We replaced Sheets with Gallardo and Sabathia with Looper and we have a slightly better bullpen.
  22. http://www.northsidebaseball.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=54146 Now the Cubs fans are on Macha for 'wanting MLB investigate Dempster's plunking of Braun'. They really are reading a lot into what Macha said there, he just said he doesn't know if anyone looked into it or not and that turns into Macha asking for an investigation I guess. Still don't know how any Cubs fan can complain about Braun when Soriano watches his HR more than any other player in the league.
  23. The timing on Braun and Gallardo was ok in my opinion, especially since we were legit contenders when they came up. We brought up Hardy half a season too early for no good reason and burned a year of arbitration on him. We probably brought up Weeks a season too early, we weren't going to compete that year regardless of the hot start and he had plenty of defensive warts to fix still. Fielder also probably should have spent another partial season in the minors, he was up in mid June and only got 62 PA at age 21, how much would another half season of work on his defense and hitting vs LH have helped him instead of rotting on our bench in a year where we were lucky to be .500. Most of the moves I just mentioned were meant to get butts in the seats so maybe they were 'worth' it in the short run but in the long run we are paying for it over the next couple years by paying extra cash to keep our players and losing some of them a full season earlier than we should have.
  24. Can't say I agree with this, I think we brought up almost every one of our players about half a season too early. That is why most of them are going to walk before they even hit their primes.
  25. My guess would be the more the Brewers win these the more fights will break out as angry Cub fans take it out on others.
