  1. Murphy bunts foul with 2 strikes on a pitch out of the strike zone while Reyes has 2nd base stolen. heh.
  2. Just to add to my post, I don't really want Sveum as the manager next year. I want someone more experienced for the next few seasons. I just think he is better than Yost.
  3. I don't know, I can make an argument that he is better just by the way they have handled the pitching staff so far. Also the whole bunt complaining is going overboard, the majority of them have been just fine though that hit and run was painful. As an example Hall bunting against a righty doesn't bother me one little bit which is the one people complained about last night.
  4. I think I'd have double switched with Durham coming in at 2B here. CV obviously is going more than 1 IP tonight and now he has to hit.
  5. I don't really understand doing a hit and run with Weeks up. Just have Hart steal and if Weeks happens to line out oh well.
  6. I sure hope Gallardo is taken out soon. He hit the wall here. Edit : nice DP but I hope that is his last batter.
  7. Sorry those were NL. If they were MLB I'd be saying we were above average given the numbers. We have had a few real stinkers this year but overall the bullpen has been adequate. Better than I would have expected given Riske being hurt and Gagne being so terrible.
  8. I really like Gagne, he is a good guy. Just wish he had pitched better in the 1st half.
  9. I would like to see the stats that show the Brewers bullpen as average. Maybe they exist but at least from a fans perspective the bullpen has been far from average4th in ERA against 10th in OPS against 6th in SV% 6th in pen support (percentage of runs allowed inherited from starters) 8th in WXR (win expectancy added for RPs) I'd say overall the bullpen is pretty much average. I guess some people could point at the ERA and say the bottom line has been above average or the OPS against and say the bottom line is below average but it most certainly hasn't been dominant or a complete disaster. It is somewhere in the middle.
  10. Gagne's splits on the year are... 1st half - 23.1 IP, 7.33 ERA, 29 H, 7 HR, 16 BB, 21 K, .969 OPS against, .328 BABIP 2nd half - 22 IP, 3.68 ERA, 17 H, 4 HR, 5 BB, 16 K, .705 OPS against, .217 BABIP At least part of that second half ERA is just lucky BABIP. The rest of it is not giving up the BB. I don't want any part of re-signing him. I'd rather give Mota another $3M instead of Gagne if we have to sign one of them. I'd rather have Coffey too.
  11. Brewers bullpen has been at least average this year so don't really see how it can apply to the Brewers.
  12. Hitters got better is a lot of it. You no longer have terrible hitting SS/2B on every team. To use 1976 as an example which is the middle of his career. The average hitter had a line of .255/.320/.361/.681. In 2008 the average hitter has a line of .264/.333.416/.749. The worst offense in baseball by OPS this season is Oakland who has a .685 OPS. They have scored 4.00 R/G.
  13. I dunno, Hall has an OPS of .560 against righties this year. I guess I can't get bent out of shape for him bunting. He also had almost bunted for a hit the last time he was up which might have played into the decision. Letting him hit away there is clearly the wrong choice, pinch hitting or bunting were the two options.
  14. Given the weather incoming to NY and the fact they might finish the season after the regular season is over I dunno what will happen~
  15. There is most certainly a difference though I doubt I'll convince you. There are times where you just lose a bunch of games because no hits fall, you constantly seem to lose by 1 run etc. Then there are periods where the team seems to just not be alive. The first couple games against the Mets we lost were the former, it just seemed like we couldn't get the big hit. Then we went into just sort of a funk where the team seemed checked out for a week and just had no life to it.
  16. You are looking at stats in completely the wrong way though. I play poker which has given me a pretty strong background in 'random stats'. You can make a -EV(expected value) play in poker and it might work out 40% of the time but it will also fail 60% of the time and eventually cost you money. Over 10,000 hands of poker that -EV move might be profitable for you because of pure dumb luck but making the move again is a mistake every time you make it, eventually it will catch up with you. Play percentages in baseball based on small samples is the same thing, regardless of what has actually happened eventually it will catch up to you and you will go -EV and lose more games than you should have.
  17. I don't have a problem with Sveum and the team does seem much more alive since he took over. I don't mind a losing streak because every team goes through them but the Brewers just felt listeless during that losing streak in early September. Like they had given up for some reason. I'm not convinced in any way shape or form that Sveum should manage next year though.
  18. Hall was bunting for a hit wasn't he, and it almost worked? Small ball does get a bad rap because of bad math. The run expectancy chart is mostly useless. It doesn't take context into account at all. As a very simplistic example Nyger Morgan bunting to 1B against the Sabathia with some other fast guy at 2B and no outs is a much higher run expectancy than Fielder bunting with Estrada at 1B against the a scrub Cubs pitcher with Lee at 1B. The hitter, the runner, the defensive player, the next hitter up to bat, the current pitcher all effect things and there is no easy chart that can do the math on the fly like people suggest. The basic chart almost never gives accurate results for any single situation.
  19. One of these 2 teams is going to have a historically bad pair of choke years in a row unless of course the Phillies choke BIG TIME.
  20. moneyball has nothing to do with OPS or SLG or HRs. Moneyball is about finding value in the marketplace of baseball. When the book was written the value was in high OBP players since they were underrated. Now moneyball is about good defense, troublemakers and 'injury prone' players.
  21. Top 4-5 is extreme but it has hardly been a big issue. In the NL they are.. 4th in ERA against 10th in OPS against 6th in SV% 6th in pen support (percentage of runs allowed inherited from starters) 8th in WXR (win expectancy added for RPs) The bullpen has not been the problem.
  22. Gagne pitches great except the games he stinks in. It is a lot like Turnbow was. Gagne will have 3, 4, 5 games in a row where he is solid and then he'll have that 1 game where he gives up 3 or 4 ER. Most RP have those 3, 4, 5 good games in a row and then gives up 1 or 2 ER.
