  1. It is winning baseball when it works, it is losing baseball more often. That is the problem.
  2. I think a Lamb/Hall platoon would out play Rolen at this point in his career. His power is largely gone, his AVG has dropped enough he is a .340 OBP guy and his defense has slipped some. Plus he is only a 400 AB a year type of guy now.
  3. With Gallardo likely going on Thu and limited to about 3 IP and Suppan likely going on Friday and going probably like 3 IP because he seems to be pitching hurt... I don't know that this is really an option.
  4. Wandy is a decent pitcher, better than Wolf or Backe.
  5. I think it was more the losing than the hurricane, the hurricane is nothing but an excuse for them to latch on to.
  6. I'd call Mota roughly a league average RP. For a 1 year deal at $3M I'm fine with him.
  7. Houston is also a non issue at this point. It is almost impossible for the Astros to take the wild card now since multiple teams have to not win any games for it to happen. It is more or less down to Mets, Phillies, Brewers.
  8. Guess that was still sportscenter I was watching. Baseball Tonight opened with Brewers.
  9. Yes we would have been better with him on the team. I was completely confused by the trade since we really needed a LH pinch hitter. To be honest though if Branyan doesn't get hurt I think Gross gets very little playtime during the season. That injury probably cost us at least 1 win if not 2.
  10. It shouldn't surprise me but the top stories on baseball tonight were Boston/Rays and then the Yankees for some reason. The most exciting game of the night in arguably the closest race and you don't lead off with it? Even though one of the teams is the Mets?
  11. I think we are about the same as the Mets and Phillies. I don't see how the Cubs really can care about this, they are a step above the other teams and they should just be worrying about getting into the series healthy.
  12. K's most certainly are a detriment to scoring runs, just other things like OBP and SLG can easily outweigh them. The Brewers do strike out too much and they don't BB enough, but they hit for enough power to offset a lot of the problem. If you took the Brewers and left them with the same exact power and same exact BB rate and somehow magically made them strike out 0 times they would be a much better hitting team. Obviously that is not realistic but you get the idea.
  13. All outs have a negative impact on OBP. How are strikeouts worse than any other out? I think we would be better off if Hart had been striking out more this year instead of hitting into double plays. AVG is largely a function of BABIP and when you strike out you don't put a ball in play. Strike outs do limit your AVG which in turn limits your OBP. It is extremely rare to find a .300 hitter who strikes out a ton. Strike outs are a tricky subject. If a player keeps everything about himself the same and just lowers strike outs he will become a better hitter. That happens to some players with age. But a strike out itself is barely worse than a normal out so a guy like Cameron should be judged by his raw stats and not worry about the Ks. If two players have the same OBP/SLG the one who strikes out less probably has a marginal edge in value but even a minute edge in OBP/SLG easily offsets a large difference in strike outs. So in one way Ks are a bad thing and in another way they really aren't. All depends on the context you are looking at.
  14. Strike outs are important in the fact that they tend to limit OBP. Scoring runners from 3rd etc is a really small part of what hurts you with a K. The team as a whole has been up with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs 301 times the entire season. Out of those 301 times they got 169 RBI(1 per 1.78 PA) with 8 of those being HR. They struck out 57 times or 1 time per 5.28 PA. The NL as a whole has 5329 PA with 3130 RBI(1 RBI per 1.70 PA) and 98 HR with 835 K or 1 per 6.38 PA. If you give us league average RBI in those situations we are sitting at 177 RBI instead of 169 RBI or less than 1 win as a team. Ks have a negative impact on OBP in general though so that is really where they hurt us.
  15. Weeks is already as good a hitter as Phillips and he isn't much worse of a fielder, so not sure how he can turn into what he already is. Escobar hasn't shown me anything with his bat yet so I think we stick with Hardy for at least another full season. His K and BB rate suggest he isn't a true .300 hitter, he doesn't have much power (though he isn't Gwynn or something either). He needs to get those BBs up for me to be excited about him starting every day.
  16. Hart had an .353 OBP last year so I'm not sure I'm ready to call him a low OBP player just yet. I'm not convinced he cannot raise his OBP back to that .350 mark next year. His K rate is down which is a good sign but for some reason he hasn't been taking BBs this yaer like he did in 2006/2007 and in the minors. My gut instinct is this year is just an outlier but it is hard to be sure.
  17. Cameron has been the 2nd best position player on the team when you factor in defense, I think he is easily worth the extension. having said that I'd like to see us sign a quality backup OF who is LH. He can give Cameron some extra rest and can give Hart some days off against tough righties. I pray we don't go with Gwynn in this role since he is terrible.
  18. This is the Mets we are talking about. If any team can blow a 2.5 game lead in the last week it is the Brewers, if any two teams can blow one it is the Brewers and the Mets!
  19. I sure hope this is a joke. While I doubt we make the playoffs we are only 2.5 games back and I fail to see how this is garbage time.
  20. I'd say Cameron could use a day off.
  21. Unfortunately ELCABALLO45 wins the prize for this month. Sadly his joke prediction may end up closer than the pessimistic real projection!
  22. My wife asked me about that picture a couple of weeks ago and I told her I had no idea what it meant, still have no clue~.
  23. The biggest problems with this team are pretty easily OBP and fielding and then the secondary issues are lack of left handed hitters and depth in the bullpen. By position the issues are defense at 1B, offense at 3B and offense off the bench in general. (I think Weeks is an average defensive 2B this year so shoot me~). For next year we have a big black hole in the rotation as well. Gallardo and Parra could be front line starters and Bush and Suppan are fine for back of the rotation but there is certainly a hole somewhere between the #1 and #3 SP next year.
  24. I figure we lose 2-5 wins from the rotation assuming we sign someone decent to fill the gap, parra improves etc. I think our offense will improve 1-3 wins between underperformers and cutting out playtime for Hall, Counsell and improvement from younger players. Then we improve 1-2 wins at manager hopefully and 1-2 in the bullpen. Obviously it is way too early make any difinitive comments on it but I don't see any reason the team should be in rebuilding mode or expected to be significantly worse next year.
  25. Hard to really complain when Durham has an OPS over 1.000 in Sept as well.
