its fine, we'll agree to disagree because I'll never buy into this. Yes there is more to baseball than physical talent but heart and competitive fire aren't going to win over talent, not over 162 games. I'm a numbers guy, i could care less if Braun hits a HR because he has so much heart or because he's just talented, in the end its all the same he hit a HR. Statistically speaking the Cubs were losing more than they should have earlier in the year and are winning more than they should now, if you want to believe its because they have more competitive fire now than before go ahead, but the fact that their stats haven't really changed says to me that things are bouncing their way. Baseball is an incredibly luck or 'variance' driven game and that controls what happens over a small sample more than the teams character in my opinion. The difference between a win and a loss is whether a ball is hit 2 feet to the right of the SS or right at him many times, sometimes things just don't go your way regardless of your talent or "heart".

He's average defensively on balls hit into his zone, above average on balls hit out of his zone for the season. I don't see this being a problem for the season, it may be a short term issue though especially if he's still not 100% healthy.

Pretty much the least fun thing in baseball is when your bullpen blows the game and that is basically why we have lost ground since the all star break. Our bullpen has blown at least 4 games which is the difference between us playing decently and poorly. I don't really blame people for being down after that last road series, still don't think they need to post that the season is over etc though.

Nope I'm sure there is a lot of valuable information in the books by those coaches, but I highly doubt the books somehow prove that team character has more to do with winning than team talent like your posts suggest.

Well luck and a general bullpen collapse. The luck was more earlier in the month, the bullpen collapse has been the cause of the last bit of losing.

Books by coaches of a sport are most likely going to just be a book of cliches because thats what most coaches deal in, no matter how good they are.

The Cubs have a .741 OPS during their hot streak and a .685 OPS against, its mostly a product of their pitching pitching way over its head and not the offense at all. Over that same timeframe we have a .792 OPS and a .720 OPS against. We have been extremely unlucky to lose more than a game or two to them, every bounce is going their way and we are losing all the tough games. Read what you will into that but it seems highly likely that luck has had as much to do wtih things as some mystic mojo working against us. The same bad luck that saw the Cubs way underperform their expected results earlier in the year.

Weeks while slumping = Gwynn while hot, I see no reason for this move. Gwynn is slightly below Counsell on the order of guys who should be on this team, slightly behind Aquino too. -
If you honestly believe no players used steroids until the 00's then you are being as naive as those who don't believe Bonds etc used them now.

Physical talent lets CV hit his corners instead of missing them, thats not just confidence. Btw Sanchez had very little talent, all he had was some speed. Nobody said the mental aspect of the game is nonexistent but its simply not nearly as important as talent is. As much as Eckstein tries and is confident he'll never be Pujols, he simply does not have that much talent. I'm sure Cordero is thinking about his road woes when he goes out there, I don't disagree with you there. The thing is he can lack confidence and still get the job done and the more he gets it done the more his confidence grows. If he simply does not have talent to begin with he'll never go anywhere. I'd also call your baseball IQ part of your talent, being smart is a talent of its own.

Still confused how this road series is Yost's fault. DId he say something to the bullpen that made every single one of them give up runs this week? Did he somehow make the offense stop scoring runs in the middle of games? I'm just really confused by this complaint. There are plenty of reasons to not like Yost but this one doesn't seem to make any sense.

just gonna vent here a little.. "good teams don't" The next time I see a sentence starting out with that I'll scream, the only thing that matters at the end of the season is your W/L record, good teams reach their W/L records in so many different ways you can't just say they don't do this or that. There have been teams who are rotten on the road who go to the playoffs, there have been teams who have had 10 game losing streaks that go to the playoffs.

The last time the fans self loathing reached this level after the Verlander no hitter we went on a good winning stretch, I'm going under the assumption the same will happen again. My other silver lining is that Zambrano hurt his foot today, doesn't seem serious but any little thing can mess him up so maybe this will.

The hitting this year combined with what the pitching should be capable of suggests we are better than a .500 team. I already pointed it out in another thread but if we are a .550 or so team you would expect between a 60 and 120 game stretch of .500 play out of us in the middle of the season. Even a .600 team will usually have a stretch of 50 games where they just play .500. I think this team has the talent to be around .530, with luck they could push it higher with bad luck it can be lower. This has been a miserable week of baseball because of the bullpen collapse but the starters have been decent, the hitting has been solid so there is some hope to be had that things go better in the near future.

9-1 homestand against PHI/NYM is probably a bit too much to ask... Oops its a 6 game home stand, a 5-1 is still probably a bit too much to ask.

I don't really care if Yost gets fired but I'm just curious how your best RP's blowing games is his fault. Every RP we used on this road trip bombed except Spurling! What is he supposed to do when the entire bullpen collapses at the same time.

what scares me about the Cubs is they really haven't been hitting very well lately but they keep winning. They have had extreme fortune for situational hitting and scoring just enough to win so this last hot streak was as much luck as it was being good. Now it looks like Lee and Soriano are finding their power strokes again and if the team hits well they'll just continue to win even without the luck helping them out anymore.

You mean seems like it this season, they have had some of the best pitching in the NL this season even if its a mirage. Is Gallardo getting squeezed as bad as it looks on gameday?
