  1. You can make a weak case for the fact Counsell should have gotten Soria up after the second walk instead of after ball 2 of the 3rd batter faced. Then maybe he is ready to come in for the 4th batter in the inning. The thing is Knebel actually got exactly the result he wanted on that 4th guy. A week grounder that could have easily been a double play if hit even a little bit harder. Trying to blame this all on Counsell just isn't logical. No matter what relievers he used they should be able to get through the bottom of the order of a bad team with a 2 run lead the vast majority of the time. Sometimes the players just blow it.
  2. He basically said adding talent is never a bad thing. There is no reason to expect Schoop to be an offensive upgrade over Villar but the defense should be better than this. Thinking the Padres are a should sweep just shows a complete lack of understanding of baseball though. They just split a 4 game series against the Cubs. You should pretty much never expect to sweep anyone. If we take 2 of 3 against them it is exactly what we should have expected knowing that sometimes it goes 1 of 3 as well. We aren't beating the Padres 66% of the time in the long run.
  3. Its called baseball, this happens to multiple teams every week of the season.
  4. You guys are really reaching if you want to blame Counsell for bringing in a guy who is struggling after coming off of the DL with a 6 run lead to try to find his stuff. This is the classic example of when Albers should be in a game. It is bad enough you all want to blame him for every single loss the team has on the year, don't try to blame him for not winning as big as they could too.
  5. This is kind of a slippery slope though. Anyway you try to define the team that stretch where they went 0-7 is going to taint the data. Before that stretch they were 55-37. After that stretch they are 9-5. If they had gone a more reasonable 3-4 during that stretch we would still be in first place, they just laid an egg for a week.
  6. Even with an electronic umpire C would be one of the most important defensive positions in baseball. The big change that is going on is that teams are realizing 3B is just not very important overall. You can shift that particular spot for a large portion of the game which results in other positions defense not being as valuable because there is an extra fielder helping them out a lot. I would imagine in the future teams will value spray hitters a bit more and it will counteract this.
  7. Your right, I was thinking fangraphs OFF stat was 5 per win and it is 10. I don't use bWAR because it is generally outdated. Since starting full time in 2014 Schoop is the 5th worst overall full time offensive contributor at 2B. If you go only by hitting he is the 8th worst. I think people just need to go into this with realistic expectations, Schoop is not a big offensive upgrade over Villar. His defense is the upgrade and the hope that something about 2017 was for real and can be recaptured. Even if he managed that he had one of the biggest differences between wOBA and xwOBA In baseball that year so at best we hope for a muted version of 2017.
  8. It is worth noting though that Schoop does not walk, strikes out a bit more than most MI and he pops out a ton, this has been true his entire career. This really does set a pretty low floor for him, when he isn't seeing the ball well and hitting it hard he just doesn't bring a whole lot. For his career as a whole he has been a below replacement level hitter. In 2017 he was fantastic. So it is hard to know whether or not he is a good value or not long term. His defense has been where his value has largely come from in his career.
  9. Pina's problems are mostly BABIP, the truth is probably somewhere between 2017 and 2018 and isn't likely a real problem considering how bad C is in general in the league.
  10. Not watching the game so cannot comment on any calls from this one. I will say I don't even enjoy watching baseball anymore because the umps so clearly blow so many strike/ball calls in big situations. Some sort of automated strike zone simply cannot come fast enough because it is seriously hurting the game at this point. The fact teams are actively looking for catchers who are good at tricking the umpires into getting the calls wrong is all it should take to reinforce the fact.
  11. I don't like the Pirates long term either. Polanco and Dickerson have these streaks and then they go back to being awful all the time, I just don't buy it. Marte is a true star so they do have him to build aorund. Diaz's power isn't for real and I doubt Cervelli's is either. The rest of the lineup is below average. Taillon and Archer gives them a decent top of the rotation but the rest of it is pretty blah. I see this Pirates team as a sub .500 team that just got really hot all together for a month. Their minor league system doesn't have a whole lot of high impact players in it anymore either. Maybe they can keep it going this year because sometimes teams do just that, but I do not like their long term outlook.
  12. See what I'm saying here about Buehler. Once he gets a guy on 1st his control is really shaky. We really have to get runs in when we get someone on or at the very least stretch the pitch count.
  13. No it didn't. They have modified the rules dozens of times to protect the fielders because the original rules were so bad. Sure in Ty Cobbs day you would just spike a guy but before his day you could just plow into him and destroy him and it was legal, that rule was changed along the way. Then the rule to spike a guy was changed. Then the guy to take out a guys leg was changed. Then the neighborhood play was added. These things have been changed over and over to make the rules make more sense. Player safety is way more important than how the game was meant to be played at this point, because the game is nothing like what it was when it was created.
  14. He needs to learn to control his emotions and stay relaxed. Whenever I’ve seen him play, he gets very visually upset when he pops out or strikes out, moreso than most. He just doesn’t seem relaxed. Sogard being sent down ruined the team chemistry and Aguilar can't hit anymore, it stinks.
  15. It was legal because it was legal to block every base when baseball was created. In the early days of baseball it was completely legal for the second basemen to block the base and force you to destroy them to reach the bag. It was only illegal to purposely tackle a player to hold them back and avoid them reaching a base. Over time they have removed the ability to block every other base but home plate. This is just the rules of baseball finally catching up to this one poorly thought out rule.
  16. It definitely is shady. I didn't see what Turner posted but Newcomb has to be thanking Hader for his coming out first because Newcombs was so much worse than Haders but he seems to be getting mostly a free pass because people are already tired of the story.
  17. Depends on the SP you want. Lynn, Hamels, Happ etc are just not clear upgrades over the mass of #3/#4 starters we have now. That package is less than the Pirates gave up for Archer by a wide margin. Not sure who was left that was worth it.
  18. How about we just go back to the old less complicated way, if the catcher is in your way then knock him out of your way. If the catcher doesnt want to get knocked over dont stand on the plate or in the baseline Because catchers who wouldn't block the plate wouldn't keep their job and those that would block the plate just get hurt. The old way was ridiculous.
  19. I'm wondering if the ump determined that the throw took him into the runner's lane. Cain definitely seemed to question it. EDIT: I think that was the case. There's almost no way the catcher could've caught that if he didn't move into Cain's path. It was pretty far up the line. I'm sure this is it but I still hate that rule. They are rewarding a bad throw. If his throw is on target he can't block the plate and Cain scores. The fact his throw is off target means the catcher is put in the lane and suddenly he is out? That is a piss poor rule.
  20. That should be catchers interference in my mind given the new rules. He is supposed to give a lane and he clearly did not. Cain was completely blocked from the plate and had no options at all.
  21. Yeah, it's looking like we'll be fortunate to score one or two off this guy. He's pretty filthy. He is one of these young guys who really struggles from the stretch so the key is just getting someone on. Once you get someone on he loses his mechanics and you have a chance to get some runs in. Unfortunately OBP isn't a huge strength of this team.
  22. I will just say I have no faith at all in Ortiz ever being a major league quality starter. He is maybe a bullpen guy with a big injury history. Carmona is too young to know, right now he doesn't' look like much of value but with a teen it is really easy for things to change quickly. The big question is whether 2017 Schoop is for real or is he the guy who walks 3% of the time and hits like .250 which derails any chance he has of being a really high quality player.
  23. The trade was Francisco Cordero for Carlos Lee. Lee was going to be a rental but Cordero still had like 2 years of team control. Lee was somewhat expendable because Gabe Gross was playing way better than expected and Corey Hart was busting on the scene and Mench was going to give us a lefty killer. Unfortunately Yost fell in love with Mench in 2007 and he ended up pinch hitting against a lot of righties for some wacky reason. They never discussed the true details of the trade but I'm of the belief that the Rangers also wanted Cruz thrown in and we asked for Mench and Nix to even it out as Cordero had more value than Lee at the time so a straight swap would have been an advantage for us.
  24. The catching issue really isn't as big as people want to make it out to be. Pina has been an above average catcher so far in his slightly over a year career. His BABIP is down right now and it is deflating everything but he is hardly a problem. A better backup C would be nice for sure but it isn't the huge weak link people keep suggesting it is. I'd love a SP but it apparently just isn't happening. We are going with the starter gets us 4 to 5 innings and we abuse the bullpen and hope it survives it path. It can work but it is certainly risky and any injuries to the bullpen will derail it.
