  1. Knebel as a bullpen arm or Perez as a utility player. Anderson hasn't quite been good enough to make the rotation and Shaw is blocked by Arrenado and Bryant.
  2. Upcoming schedule. 3 vs Padres 4 vs Pirates 3 @ Braves 3 @ Reds 3 vs Marlins 3 vs Orioles There is no reason the Brewers can't have a winning record over that period. 1 @ Cubs 3 @ Yankees All Star break Even going 1 and 3 probably sees the Brewers at or over .500 at the all star break. 3 vs Phillies 4 @ Pirates 3 @ Phillies That is through July 23rd. A very soft schedule coming up. It is sort of a mixed blessing because at that point I'm not sure how to treat the trade deadline. I won't talk about the schedule for the month after that because this is the optimism thread.
  3. Broxton has 2.3 WAR in less than a full season in the majors. I think they will give him a good bit of time still. They just might protect him against tougher righties.
  4. After this series we have something like 16 straight games against losing teams. Could leave us in a very uncertain place come trading time.

  6. Do we think Lutz is going to sign? Sure seems like his dream was to play college ball for Texas.
  7. To be fair, Packer fans aren't much better in terms of complaining about their consistently successful team. I guess everyone always wants more. Yep. I still think McCarthy is a bad coach who should be replaced. He is the reason that Aaron is only going to make it to 1 super bowl in his career most likely. Just because your team is good doesn't mean everyone running it is perfect.

  9. Scahill has been the worst pitcher in the bullpen this year. In fact filtering for 10 IP he is close to the worst pitcher in all of baseball on the year. Don't fall into the trap of small sample ERA. less than 3 K/9, almost double the walks as strike outs. Lots of contact against. He has been just awful.
  10. Scahill has been just putrid this year, glad he is gone. Don't let the lucky ERA fool you. Almost double the walks as he has strike outs, 90% zone contact rate. This is a guy who can't strike people out and is very hittable. He is 30 years old and hasn't shown a stat line worth owning since 2014 in AAA.
  11. I enjoy following the draft but the truth is nobody knows, the players just aren't that projectable. I'm sure there were Angels fans who were upset when Trout was drafted instead of their guy. Over half of the players drafted today will not post a positive WAR in the majors. I went back and looked at the 2010 draft since that one should mostly be done producing, there were 11 of the top 30 players I even recognized. Some of that 11 have basically done nothing at the majors. The baseball draft is throwing darts blindfolded and hoping to hit the board. So it is really hard for me to get too pumped up or too upset with who is taken.
  12. People think lineups are more consistent than they really are. The Astros have played 64 games, they have used 55 different lineups with the most common only being used 3 times. The Brewers have played 64 games and used 54 different batting orders not counting the pitcher slot. Their most common used is 5 times. These aren't outliers, you can look at every team and it is like that. It is why I can never get into baseball simulation games, their player usage just is never realistic enough. If you are lucky you can keep your top 4 or so hitters pretty consistent, but the lineup as a whole is just never going to be consistent.
  13. Hopefully it happens in the next 5 years. It should have happened along with every day inter-league.
  14. Stephen Strasburg is the last pitcher to be drafted in the first 10 picks who become a consistent ace. Taking pitchers that early is just sooo risky. There have been a couple who showed flashes like Cole and Taillon but for the most part it is a bunch of failures.
  15. Bullpen guys are just tricky. Oliver Drake has actually been the 2nd best RP on the team by peripherals. Knebel, Drake, Barnes look like viable bullpen arms. Hughes is ok as a junk time type of guy. The rest of the bullpen has just been awful. Torres maybe gets a bit more leash because he has been better in the past. It is such a small sample to go on that you have to generally be patient.
  16. He was brought up a full season too early and unfortunately that means by the time Arcia is good we will probably be trading him.
  17. It is completely normal for a young pitcher to break into the majors in the bullpen and then transition back to being a starter. This isn't telling of anything other than this is how baseball works. Players have been used like this all the way back to the days of Earl Weaver. Adam Wainwright is a great example. Aaron Sanchez was brought up this way recently. Chris Sale, Alex Wood, CJ Wilson etc. There are plenty of guys who take this path to being starters.
  18. I think most managers would rather ease a young guy into the game rather than throw them right into the fire. Especially when it is a starter converted to the bullpen so it is already a situation he isn't fully used to. I know he has done some RP in the minors but his routine this year is as a starter.
  19. It is a tough call on Hughes because 333 IP still isn't a very meaningful sample size. ERA is just a wildly unreliable stat year to year which is why the various predictors exist. I'm guessing he is a 4 ERA guy given our defense and the park he is in now not suppressing HR as much. Just a filler guy.
  20. The 23 appearances thing isn't a big deal. We are 3 games away from 1/3 of the season. 23 appearances has players on pace for 69 which isn't extreme. If they are over 26 3 games from now it is probably a bit much. Jimmy Nelson has a 3.16 FIP and 3.43 xFIP to support his 3.45 ERA. Nelson and Davies look like part of the long term rotation for the Brewers. Hopefully Davies is the backend of it and he figures out how to not stink the first part of the season which he has done back to back years now.
  21. Villar has gotten a lot of guff for all the mental mistakes on the base paths and in the field and rightfully so. He is a bad baseball player. That doesn't mean he can't be a valuable player though just with raw talent.
  22. The best way to break in starters in the majors is to either keep them in the minors a long time to get them fully stretched out or bring them up in the bullpen for part of their first year. It is the only way to make the innings work.
  23. I value experience over age. Players tend to peak in their 3rd or 4th season, not at age 27 like people like to quote. It is just most good players come up in their early 20s so the peaks match up. Broxton doesn't even have a full season of experience yet. The issue is really that this partial season is worse than the other one so he isn't showing growth yet. Broxton has to show something this year or I think they give up on him, but I think it is fine being patient with him for a while longer. He might just be a 4th OF who plays against LHP after this season. He has a 120 wRC+ against LHP which is fantastic. It is just 82 against RHP which is awful. He also hits really poorly at Miller Park. Hard to say if that is just noise or if the batting eye messes with him since the sample is pretty small.
  24. We deserve to lose for not scoring with runners at 1st and 3rd with no outs. Bringing the infield in there is really dumb baseball. The odds of it cutting down a run are just way too low when you have an AB behind you. Now instead of having to score 1 run we are probably going to have to score 2+.
  25. I agree that those numbers look below average. ERA is a really awful stat over these types of samples.
