  1. Wouldn't surprise me in the least to see the Brewers do something wild in the Rule 5 draft. I don't have the time really to rummage through who is available... are there any leads by chance?
  2. I didn't know if a whole thread was appropriate for this topic but with 8 (?) open 40 man roster spots, I haven't been this excited for a Winter's Meeting in awhile. I expect Stearns to be active and by Thursday I think we will have more answers to who will fill out our 40 man and our NRI list could be massive. With possibly the exception of middle infield and catcher .. if you are an agent that has a client wanting a major league job ... David Stearns is on your meeting list in the next 96 hours. I don't know that I'm expecting any earth shattering moves from MKE, but I'd love to come away with a veteran corner infielder and a middle rotation guy by week's end along with the usual handful of "see what sticks" signings.
  3. I agree, however one good season makes your value 'flippable' for a valuable asset (see: Grisham, Trent). I agree he needs to come to play this year!
  4. His pace and quirkiness just screams "one time through the order". When he started with us before he always was yanked early because a large portion of his effectiveness comes from making the hitters uncomfortable with his pace and style of pitching. Once they see it once, he becomes much more hittable I think? So my two cents, I'd keep him exactly where he is. Have him follow a harder throwing starter for 2-3 innings; he is so effective and so valuable to bridge that middle game gap.
  5. I don't expect him to make the team out of Spring Training obviously... but if we are stretching our imaginations here, he is the kind of guy you WOULD use a 26th roster spot on. Late inning pinch running into defensive replacement does add value to your overall roster if you have the space for it. Building a roster out of multi-position players theoretically allows for the use of the extra roster spot for a guy like this. Don't yell at me, I don't want Keon getting at bats as much as the next guy ... I'm just mentioning it.
  6. So you don't think Strasburg couldn't be had for about 4/120?? 5 for 150?? The Brewers could absolutely do that. A lot of these players are more concerned about AAV than anything else anyway. But whatever, if you are comfortable with them throwing stuff against a wall every year and seeing if it sticks as far as their pitching goes, without an incredible amount of luck, you will never see them win a world series the rest of your lifetime(regardless of how old you are now). The current strategy of the front office, which you are challenging here, has us now in a position to qualify for the playoffs for a 3rd straight season which has never been done before in our franchise's history. Stated a different way, we are currently witnessing the most successful stretch in Milwaukee Brewers baseball history, due in large part to our strategy of acquiring talent.
  7. Xavier Edwards would be a fun prospect to have and watch grow. Super young for his level and he is hitting. If he ever hits for power he could be a fun one.
  8. If our roster remains the same then I think Urias IS the 3rd baseman. However, I don't believe for one second that we will not add a true 3rd baseman or 2 or 3 at some point in the next few months and more than likely in the next few weeks and therefore I think the projected answer is we won't
  9. No need to use Hader to fill these holes, IMHO. Quick ... who are some underappreciated assets that could provide corner infield production that the Brewers could trade more peanuts for? J.D. Davis and Dominic Smith have been mentioned a lot so far. Jeff McNeil isn't exactly underappreciated, but he'd be a fit. I wonder what it would take to pry Colin Moran away from the Pirates? Or Jose Osuna? I'm all about digging for treasure so let's keep this conversation moving and finding deals ... but giving Todd Frazier $8mil to hit .250 with 20-25 HR's and unshocking defense isn't the worst move right now. He has a little 1B experience as well so he can fill in both corner IF spots.
  10. Is it way too optimistic of me to think pairing him with a defensive minded country mate mentor will upgrade his defensive abilities as time goes on?
  11. For those that like this sort of thing, tell me if I got this one right... Brewers draft Jason Rogers. Brewers trade Jason Rogers for Keon Broxton and Trey Supak. Brewers trade Broxton to NYM for Bobby Wahl, Adam Hill and Felix Valerio. Brewers trade Hill and sprinkle on a free pick for Narvaez. So drafting Jason Rogers has netted us a current haul of Trey Supak, Bobby Wahl, Omar Narvaez and Felix Valerio with the assistance of a compensatory pick. Conclusion, Jason Rogers was a great draft pick.
  12. Maybe I'm looking at the wrong numbers but baseball reference says he was 8-26 as a pinch hitter last year: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.fcgi?id=narvaom01&year=2019&t=b
  13. When you only know 3/5 of the infield it's kind of hard to judge it as a whole. When your catcher and 2B are among the worst at the position and you SS is likely below average, pretty sure you have a good idea. Ryan Braun will be our opening day 3rd baseman.
  14. Both Narvaez and Pina are Venezuelan. Maybe means nothing. Maybe Pina is the perfect mentor and pairing with him though.
  15. I'm bracing for the impact on the return as well although the Mariners may have lost a little leverage when they announced he was no the block due to their catching surplus so I'm hoping we retained a bit of ground in the negotiations... Love the get though.
  16. Wild. Gonna be very tough for our FO to compete for the top 10 FA every year with the market like this. I got you. No worries.
  17. Jesus Aguilar already making demands and it is paying dividends for all of baseball.
  18. Kind of assumed Hamels was going to get a 1 year deal for a higher $ value so I thought we were a good candidate after both Moose and Grandal left. Would have been an innings eater we may end up needing. I'm not opposed to Keuchel either if it makes sense.
  19. ..and another case of a non-tender re-upping with his original team: https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/28221615/lefty-tyler-anderson-returns-giants-one-year-deal It happens 10-15 times every year. I'm not sure where others were getting the notion there has to be bad blood because of a disagreement in contracts...
  20. Short answer, in this case, is yes. If you are asking if we will be able to replace Grandal and Moose.. then probably no, but they were free agents. If we are talking about the non-tender pool (which we are) then the production we are replacing is Guerra, Claudio, Shaw, etc... and yes, I believe we can find those type players out there.
  21. I think any non-tendered player would consider it insulting to get an offer from the team that non-tendered him. They had every opportunity to bring him back, but only want to now at a discounted price?! I wouldn't take that deal, and I'd try to land on a division rival just to be spiteful. One of my great joys in life was walking away from a job after being expected to accept a pay cut. I can't imagine a competitive athlete would be any more forgiving than I was. I'm not certain this is accurate. I'm going to make up numbers here.. but if David Stearns told Shaw and his agent that he was comfortable offering Shaw $X to compete for a job on our team and Shaw/Agent came back with "we think we are worth 2x or 3x that offer" ... if Stearns' response isn't offensive - ex. "I hope you are right and I hope you can get that much for you and your family ... I will set you free to explore the market and find the best deal for you.. if you are unhappy with what you find ... please come back and we will have that offer for you..." I don't think I would be offended if I was Shaw. We always hear the cutthroat nature of professional sports but I don't think feelings have to be smashed in all cases. If Stearns is as good with people and words as he is at accumulating talent ... a return of any of our non tenders is not out of the question in my opinion.
  22. I just wish we had a little time before the season started to fill out the roster...
  23. You post this comment literally the exact same day we traded Grisham after years of patience with him and are selling at what could very well be his peak value. This is ironic. Maybe, or maybe he explodes. You just cannot read the future. Look at Brinson? Ray? I always liked Grisham better than those two. I felt like saying "what could very well be" covered my statement in case he ascends. Maybe I don't know English though.

  25. FWIW: The Padres beat writer seems to think there may be cash or another PTBNL involved.. "The Padres needed outfield and starting pitching. They just landed Trent Grisham and Zach Davies from Milwaukee, sources said. The cost: Luis Urías and Eric Lauer. Might be cash/ptbnl involved as well. It's an upside-for-upside swap. The Padres like Grisham'd. " AJ Cassavell (@AJCassavell)
