  1. Interesting! I'll be happy to watch Trey throw and this Topa pull kind of came out of left field. Knowing Counsell they will be pitching the 4th and 5th innings tonight.. Go Crew!
  2. Yep. Exactly how I feel. Phelps HAS BEEN slightly better the the guys we've got to replace him, but he certainly isn't anything special. Get younger and get whatever you can for him at his peak value right now and sign another guy like him in the offseason then trade that guy high to get younger....etc etc. etc. Of course signing veterans and dealing them for “low level minor leaguers” at the deadline doesn’t sound like the team will be winning much under your scenario. Ultimately, I don’t really care about Phelps either way, I’m more disappointed the Brewers didn’t add and are content to “see what happens”/ punt on this year. Wasting a prime season from Yelich, and having the other young players march a year closer to free agency while likely playing out the string. I mean, I get it - but who could we have traded to add anything of significance? Ashby? Lutz? Otherwise we are looking to deal from the Hiura, Burnes, Woodruff lot to get anything that is a splash. We didn't really have any bullets to add in the sense that your posts suggests..
  3. The Brewers are in a weird position being on the cusp of the playoffs while have an offense that is confused. I don't if we are buying or selling, which is a weird spot to be in. I don't think I see a big move either of those ways today (trading Hader or acquiring a name) ... but I think a small move in either direction will be done. I tend to lean towards a small sell move (Phelps more than Anderson) or something like this and counting on the offense to wake up a bit to give us a playoff push. I don't know that Stearns wants to give Phelps $4.5 mil next year with the option so I think he is most likely to move today?
  4. I haven't. He's not even really a prospect anymore. Nottingham's bat has really fallen off in the minors and he was never known as a defensive prospect. He's already 25, I think if they really thought anything of his future they would have given him an extended look by now. Maybe he can surprise and put it all together. But more likely he's another Jett Bandy. If one game means anything, Nottingham deserves a 4 year extension worth $80mil. That was a missile he hit. I'm also only going to refer to him as 'Sheriff' from now on.
  5. I'll never forget that Orlando Arcia had the Brewers first 3 hits of the season. I need a stat guy pronto to find out if that has ever happened before. Also, whoever had this starting lineup predicted for Game 11 of the season is a damn liar.
  6. This is such an interesting take and it comes across as a little callous to me. My initial thought when I heard the news was that Cain obviously had doubts going into all of this but I assume (based off of no info) that he wanted to give it a go for MKE and his teammates to see if the situation was going to be safe. He got a feel for the situation and decided against.
  7. It is weird... but is also allows for interaction you don't normally get. Take the popup yesterday than Sogard caught where Arcia ran into him. I was watching with family with BA and Rock's broadcast and you could hear very clearly the 'conversation' between Sogard/Cain/Arcia who were all yelling "I got it". I had a sister who laughed at it but it led to a good conversation about who is the 'quarterback' in both the infield and outfield in terms of who gives way to who. Never would have had that conversation if the fans were there. So I agree, this year is weird. Let us experience it as it is. If I don't like it I will mute the TV and turn on music...
  8. With how well Gamel is swinging the bat, I'm curious if Braun sees much of the outfield at all this year? Seems like it would keep him healthier to just swing and Gamel is the superior defender to give the Big 3 spells... just a thought. We begin our Brewers Ryan Braun farewell tour by saying goodbye to his glove first?
  9. Welcome back all. Here's to hoping we can get out to a fast start and lock up one of the 8 NL playoff spots early
  10. The Padres info is included in that article, thank you for posting.
  11. My cousin pitches in the Padres organization. He is still in AZ and I reached out to make sure he was still going to get paid during the hiatus. I asked if they did and his response was "We have no idea". I know this is uncharted territory, but does anyone have any information on this sort of thing. These guys make little money as it is, I can't imagine the big league clubs wouldn't supplement?
  12. There's a lot of reasons for shortages, a few: 1) Most companies have moved to just-in-time purchasing of supplies instead of having a large amount of stock on hand - when demand spikes then a shortage happens even on some basic supplies. 2) Unfortunately making 2-10X selling to panicked people on Amazon beats selling at low-price to a hospital chain. The surgeon general already warned about a possible shortage of surgical masks due to the large demand from the general public. Go on Amazon to see what items are selling for and what are out of stock. Two weeks ago, it was hard to find Purell and other hand sanitizers (I bought the component reagents at normal prices). This week the components are almost all out of stock or 4-10X the price they were when I purchased. Alcohol wipes are being bought because Lysol wipes are out of stock. People are buying the high priced items to the point of buying out the stock. Hospitals are scrambling to get stock. Crazy. We also get a lot of our supplies from China... who currently is not supplying.
  13. A) This isn't about protecting athletes. It is to reduce spread so healthy people aren't giving it to at risk groups. B) Many people are no longer going to work, they have been sent home and/or are working from home. I understand everyone is different. I have always been a curious person but I know my 'want' to learn and discover information isn't everyone's cup of tea.. but it always bothers me, ESPECIALLY in times like this, when people form an opinion on one piece of information and drop anchor on their opinion or understanding of something. I'm not saying I know anything at all about anything... but the opinion of "I am young and healthy, I don't care about this" is potentially very dangerous in a situation like this. It isn't that hard to learn and be open to more information. 1) This virus has a lot of unknowns to it. Generally speaking, caution is a good thing? Diving headfirst into water is fine, but generally wouldn't you like to know how deep the water is first? 2) It has been very deadly to a very specific group of people who are already vulnerable. 3) Our hospitals/healthcare infrastructure can't handle the massive spread that this virus has shown to be capable of in other countries. Shutting down the start of the MLB season has little to do with keeping Ryan Braun or Christian Yelich healthy but much more to do with making sure Froedtert, etc doesn't break fire code.
  14. Iran has the 3rd highest infection rate of this and it has the same relative temperature right now as Arizona. The warm/cold thing is a terrible generalization to make based on the actions of a completely different strain of virus. Please don't spread information like this without confirming accuracy first.
  15. There have been many, MANY stories over the years of guys working on specific pitches through spring training and not caring about results one bit. I can't remember if it was Ben Sheets or not .. but I distinctly remember one of our pitchers years and years ago getting shelled for 2 innings and they asked him after the game how he felt and his response was something like "really, really good. very happy with where I'm at" and the reporter basically said "umm, you got blasted today" .. and his response was "right, but I only threw fastballs on the inside edge today. Was working the black and inside of it." The guy just worked his command on one specific pitch and one specific location for the entire 30 or 35 pitches he threw that day. Basically, spring training often means very little results wise for guys who have roster spots secured. They are just getting into game shape and want to be ready when it matters. Anderson's stats don't mean anything until they do.
  16. $11M seems really high to me as well. So if we got Sogard at 1 yr/$4.5 mil ... and he produces 1 WAR this year he is outperforming his contract by $6.5 million? That doesn't seem right?
  17. Can someone who is better with numbers and WAR, etc give a quick break down what Yelich will have to produce over the course of the contract to validate it, specifically performance wise? Also, is there a general agreement about Braun's contract and how he performed in comparison? I'm just curious..
  18. Yep and I know it might be getting greedy but if Urias can be the real thing our 2-3-4 could be set for 2 more presidential cycles.
  19. I'm not saying the Yankees couldn't make a move for one of our guys ... but it is super funny to think about how 'bad' our starting rotation is according to all of the media and our own fan base, and then to think the Yankees would be coming to us for help. Also, of all clubs I don't think the Yankees would be giving up their #10 prospect for a short term rental like this when Cashner, Vargas, etc are still available and could fill in for a few weeks and cost them nothing but money. I don't think I see a fit.
  20. I know this is getting way ahead of things, but Yelich just opened the door for an opportunity to be called the best player in Brewers history. Yount, Braun, Molitor, etc.. Knock on wood, Yelich just punched a ticket to the table.
  21. How amazing would it be if the Brewers are able to parlay a couple of Logan Morrison spring training home runs into any kind of prospect? If that happens my avatar is changing to Stearns.
  22. I tried to do a count on it. It's literally impossible to fit him unless they go with 12 pitchers. Enjoy your showcase and go door2door peddling your goods lomo. It really isn't. It's as easy as optioning Gamel and Healy. .. and we have seen how much Stearns and Co LOVE depth so if Morrison has a great camp I actually think it is likely that Gamel is optioned and Morrison starts the year with the club.
  23. I don't think that is that far fetched, especially given the 3 batter rule. It is a real advantage having a Broxton/Hamilton type available to you in a close game. If a new pitcher starts an inning and is historically slow to the plate or has a bad throwing catcher to work with, etc - then Smoak/Narvaez/Gyorko, etc leads off with a single - you now have (insert basestealer here) on first with a high percentage chance of taking 2nd and the pitcher can't be removed. In a close game, that is valuable no? I get your point about slowing the game down though. Because the pitcher WILL throw over to 1st six straight times when this happens.
  24. Just as a counterpoint, how many MLB rosters have the flexibility/versatility to be able to use the 26th roster spot in the fashion where Hamilton might become an asset?
  25. I don't necessarily disagree with you. If we can find a good bat as the 26th it would be beneficial, but in this example if we are comparing Gamel to Hamilton. What Gamel provides defensively is equaled by someone like Hamilton. Does the small bump in offensive output from Hamilton to Gamel in ~100 at bats over the course of a season outweigh a possible late inning advantage of having Hamilton on your bench every night? I don't know the answer. I just think it is an interesting way to possibly utilize the extra roster spot and give your roster an additional element.
