  1. For the sake of improving our team ... I'd be all about re-acquiring Matt LaPorta, albeit I wouldn't give them anything of value at all. However, I do not want them making the move right now. If the Brewers acquired LaPorta ... Mat Gamel's psyche would be ruined. I know he's a major league ball player and he shouldn't let anything bother him ... but he has been given the short straw a lot of times alright by the Brewers and this might be the thing that does him in. Let Gamel breathe a little bit is my vote.
  2. He was already guaranteed to be around for the next 4 years Right, but I said five years I think in terms of Greinke there is certainly a message being sent though. Yes, Lucroy would be here for 4 more years regardless... but this new contract still qualifies as "taking care of" one of your players. By guaranteeing that money, the Brewers have made that statement. The Brewers have shown they are not the Brewers of old where you sign here to play only if you are out of options or it is the last place you can find a starting gig to boost your stock to get a better job later. In the last two seasons we have reached out and "taken care of" Braun, Weeks, Hart, Yovani, and now Lucroy. We have a reasonable set of new pitching and position prospects that are near major league ready to help the team .... Greinke is a smart guy, he can see all of this. This contract is good for the team, but it also continues to emphasize that these aren't your dad's Brewers and if Greinke is willing to look long term, he will have a chance to win here.
  3. Not only that, can anyone name a likely successor to Lucroy currently in the Brewer system? I can't. You can argue whether or not to sign Greinke or Marcum, but at least they've invested in young arms that may emerge to replace at least one of them. At best Maldanado projects as a backup. Maybe someone currently at a low level will emerge but that's a long way off. A long term deal isn't likely to be all that expensive and it gives them cost certainty at the position for what should be Lucroy's prime years. Not only that ... but if the deal is fair (which it sounds like it is?) and you do end up finding a replacement for Lucroy,. he is a trade able piece for previously stated reasons. Locking him up now and avoiding another situation in a few seasons when we have to go through Estrada, Kendall, Zaun, etc ... is a very good thing.
  4. His contract was guaranteed. http://espn.go.com/mlb/spring2012/story/_/id/7731716/cincinnati-reds-closer-ryan-madson-miss-season-elbow Chapman now in line?
  5. Yes. That is evil. Plus I have Arnett targeted for Cleveland in my LaPorta deal Interesting.. I've had Arnett lined up for JJ Hardy for a year now.
  6. Losing Prince obviously hurts, but I think the step up from last season's McGehee to this season's Aramis Ramirez makes up for a nice portion of it. Alex Gonzalez playing shortstop also adds a few wins to our team... as it (conceivably) keeps our starters in games longer and saves a few innings from the bullpen over the course of a season. I think Alex Gonzalez is going to be Marcum's best friend. A pitch to contact thrower who now has a SS who can go get the ball. All starters will benefit. The 2 fellas who I think will determine how much we miss Prince are Gamel and Aoki IMO. If Gamel can perform well enough against righties ... I think Gamel/Ramirez will rival the production of last year of Casey/Prince against RHP. If Aoki can hold up against LHP, with Hart presumably sliding to 1B for those 30 games ... having Hart/Ramirez swinging against lefties will again be comparable to Prince/Casey. Losing Prince hurts offensively... but it is possible/probable? that the Brewers have covered that production. Long story short .. we are fine. I'm excited about this team. Let's get a 7th inning guy and we will have another fun year.
  7. Yeah, if they swoop in with an 8-10 year offer at the right money, he'll be an Oriole for sure. Wouldn't put it past them at all. I think he'll sign with a team no one seems to be mentioning as a top contender for his services. Not sure if that'll be the Orioles or not though.I have been saying Baltimore for some time now too ... and I know Scott Boras' clients only have one factor in how they approach free agency, but I think JJ Hardy is going to have a hand in how this plays out.
  8. Kotsay is going to make the all-star team and start for an injured Shane Victorino is center and bat lead off because that's where the CF was going to bat in RR's lineup.
  9. Texas locked up the AL Pennant last night so they moved the Brewers to primetime. Had the Tigers won, the AL game would have been at 7 and we would have rolled at 3 but they wanted at least one game in that 7 PM slot.
  10. Section 417. I'm wearing my dark blue Yount jersey. 12-1 lifetime at Miller Park (including Game 5 of the NLDS). Will then work on tickets for Game 7. Go Crew.
  11. Lineup via McCalvy on Twitter: Hart 9, Hairston 5, Braun 7, Fielder 3, Weeks 4, Betancourt 6, Gomez 8, Lucroy 2, Greinke 1
  12. I feel real good about Gomez tonight for some reason. Most of my hunches are horrible though... Let's hope for an early HBP so both benches get warned and Garcia forgets how to pitch again.
  13. I agree, no matter what Prince will face a LOOGY twice a game if its close and will not get strikes with 1st open, 2 outs or RISP. There is no chance a team will look at JHJ and then think they should throw strikes to Prince. I think JHJ should be up in the 2 hole with how hot he has beenBut that's the point ... when someone says 'protection for Prince' ... it isn't necessarily as much that Prince will get pitches to hit, it is that when Prince is on base there is a chance he will score and right now Weeks isn't the guy to make that happen.
  14. I appreciate the discussion... which was the intent of the question. A lot of fans have been calling for Weeks to move down in the order to get someone at 5 who can protect better at this point and the question then becomes if Weeks offensive value has downgraded that much since his return ... where is the line when you upgrade your defense and play the righty/lefty matchup? Again, don't mean to offend any of you by suggesting it... just want to talk through the chess moves.
  15. Against Carpenter. Low scoring game. Defense needed. I don't think it's crazy. Will it happen? Probably not. But Weeks can't move around the bases and is turning into a liability at the plate right now.
  16. Well.. throughout the year Braun and Fielder have carried us with Hart and Weeks as the complimentary weapons. This post season it has been Braun and Fielder doing their thing with Hart and Weeks nowhere to be found. Their offensive replacements have been Yuni and Hairston. So the question looms ... there are 3 games to go (hopefully/hopefully not) with 2 against righties and tomorrow against Garcia ... what should our lineups look like? Against Garcia tomorrow I'm expecting Gomez in center and Hart back in right. The usual Weeks at 2nd and Hairston at 3rd. Game 6 at home against Jackson Morgan should be back in center and I'm up in the air in right field because I think I want Kotsay out there against Carp in the finale and I'm not sure I want to run him out there two nights in a row again? The tricky one for me right now is Rickie Weeks. I think some of you might fight me for this but if we go 7 and Weeks doesn't shake out of it here real quick I think I would consider giving Counsell the start at 2nd. Hairston or Yuni at this point give better protection for Fielder and banking on a low scoring game again "good" at bats are going to be a necessity. Given the upgrade on defense ... I dunno. Talk me into/out of that one.
  17. How much of his contract did Randy Wolf earn tonight? Seriously...
  18. I agree. But you'd have to think with his success here along with a very competitive team we have a strong upper hand in retaining him. Veterans priorities once their careers are winding down seem to always be 1) Get a job 2) Get a job on a competitive team 3) Money. Milwaukee is a great fit for JHJ for the next few seasons.
  19. Hairston is everything I wish Betancourt could be. Seriously though ... what a great deadline move.
  20. Just get it back to Milwaukee!
  21. Does anyone else sense RR's optimism with the home run and see Morgan leading off in center tomorrow with Kotsay in the 2 hole playing in right? Ron Roenicke is making my brain think of things I don't want to think of.
