  1. It's baseball. Any team that gets in can have a run. It's the only sport where the matchups do next to nothing to put me at ease.
  2. My favorite stand-up of all time. Celebrity deaths never really do anything to me but this absolutely sucks. I was up late watching his greatest hits.
  3. A defense that has to have a lead would strike me as not a very good one. That's essentially the same as saying the offense is the defense.
  4. I suppose it's all the same anyway because a punt is a stop. The point of the "debate" is still unclear to me. The Packers have great players but didn't get a stop. But their defense is actually pretty good or was last season? The DC sucks? Is that it? I can buy that the DC isn't good. I just don't think the personnel is all that good either. They have some good players for sure, but that's not saying much. But their defense IMO typically has way too many guys who are doing next to nothing productive. And not so much recently, but Ted Thompson had a love affair with doling out 6 year careers to guys who probably would otherwise out of the league in 2 or 3. I see Jaire, Clark I guess? Amos seems OK. I'm starting to fear Z has reached the "my back hurts and I'm decent for half the season" stage. P. Smith is a formidable player. Gary seems alright. The rest of them are just guys to me. I'm sure I missed one or two.
  5. Every team has good players on defense. The Packers have a bunch of mediocre ones too. Including some that are probably considered "good" but really are closer to average as is typically the case when it comes to fans vs. reality on a bad defensive team. Splitting hairs as I haven't looked up the Bucs game or remember it too well, but I do know at least one of Brady's INTs was a punt he just tossed up on 3rd and long.
  6. False narrative? Who made that narrative? You are just being pedantic. When I said "couldn't stop", I assumed you could figure out I meant their defense has been historically bad and for most the past decade has won largely by scoring a bunch of points. There are literally tens of games the Packers have won while an opposing QB throws for 400 yards and completes 65-75% of his passes. I mean that's practically all they did the literal year after winning the SB. Maybe they had a stop in each game, but I would still say they were incapable of stopping teams. And again I am selling on last year's supposedly "pretty good defense." Look at that regular season schedule. There are almost no juggernauts on it and still plenty of games they gave up huge yards and points. And again, like every year, when they needed to show up against the elite teams they got run over. I'm not understanding your thesis here though. Like, the Packers defense isn't bad? But it is...? But the offense was worse last week? Like what are you trying to say other than they've never won a game in which they didn't force a stop? Because it doesn't seem worth pointing out.
  7. For the record I didn't think their defense last year was very good. They got run over by Tampa twice, lucked into playing SF in a covid joke injury-riddled year and generally had a pretty favorable schedule when it came to playing good offenses. They rounded out nicely in December but I think the "soft" moniker still applied to last year's team. If I could sum up the Packers of the last 10 years in a word, it's soft.
  8. It's easy to comb through that document for 10 years worth of games? Why don't you just do it? You're the one that apparently wants to know so bad. This is such an odd thing you're doing lol.
  9. There have been games in which a team is leading the Packers and then turtles and you'd end up fist pumping every time they ran the ball because there was at least a chance they'd tackle them after 3 yards. A lot of the last decade has felt like we can moderately contain the pass or run, but never both in the same year. Sunday looked like neither.
  10. That would probably be tough to do even if one existed because I don't know how to find "stops" in the box score. But I think you're being hyper-analytical about one awful blowout loss. Would it really matter if the Packers had forced one stop? 2? Because I likely could find several games like that in the past decade in which they won. That's kinda what they have been for 10 years. "If we score 30 first, we'll probably win!" I don't know what your point is anyway. That their defense sucks? Their front 7 is bad?
  11. There have been too many games to count over the years where the Packers did in fact win despite never stopping the other team's offense. I'm sure there were a few in which they were gashed on the ground, but usually it doesn't matter and the other team could run the ball, but isn't because they can pass just fine. I don't think it really matters if they pass or run. We don't have a great track record with either and spend lots of Rodgers's career just trying to score 38 points. Our front 7 has been mostly embarrassing for a couple decades.
  12. I enjoyed watching him on the Brewers but he was very easy to dislike and we'd probably all think he's a doofus on any other team. The suspension was just icing on the cake but he had the kind of personality that's "charming" for one team and "douchey" for all the others.
  13. Any DC that had the Packers defense middling or worse would be on the hot seat. People are sick of this brand of defense. But yes there were embarrassing. I just think the Packers time in the sun may be over. I'm ready to see an approach outside of the $50 million QB plan. Maybe a great defense and a ball control offense for a change. I think it's likely they get it going and are a playoff team this season. But I think that's probably all they can be as constructed.
  14. Not surprised at this point obviously, but in long-term hindsight I definitely am. I was pretty sure his retirement was a "I'll be there if they're in first place in August" type of deal. But I guess he meant it over the years when he always sort of said or hinted that baseball was never his true love.
  15. Sometimes those stats come about because of a few key plays in the game. Once it's 24-3 there is much less incentive to throw. Packers looks like crap. But watching it back it seems like at 17-10 it probably could have been a different game. I won't defend the Packers defense though. It's almost always bad and is probably average at best, again.
  16. I'd say the defense was OK last year. Better than it usually is but it wasn't like some awesome lockdown thing. Somewhere between its usually crappy self and the '14 team which was the last one that I thought had a really good defense by the end of the season.
  17. It's hard for me to keep blaming DCs when the defense has been mostly bad for 30 years unless you pick out a couple of seasons. I think there's probably less talent on the defense than fans like to think. There were long periods of watching the Packers where I'd pull teeth to tell people that Morgan Burnett or Cletidus Hunt weren't that great.
  18. Some of these takes are most likely going to age very poorly. I can't stand Rodgers, and I think there's a good chance the Packers regress from last season, but there's no chance in hell they're as bad as they looked today. I missed the game, but yikes. For my money, they thought they could sleepwalk through the Saints "backup QB" playing a misplaced home game because they are the mighty Packers with the MVP and lots of shiny offensive weapons. Meanwhile Winston was on a mission to prove he belongs in the league. Atrocious game but probably a badly needed wake-up call to put all this Last Dance nonsense to the side and remember that they're not just handed a seat in the NFCCG.
  19. I think it's probably more important for the Brewers to catch the Rays than it is to cling to a dream of the #1 seed. It would be nice to know that if we get out of the NL we have the HFA no matter what. And with the DH it may be a more tangible advantage than hosting the Giants an extra game.
  20. I like him but there is not really loyalty here. There's flexibility in that he's a huge fish in a small pond and has the leverage to run off and do all his gigs as he pleases. A major market that would poach him wouldn't tolerate it. So it seems to work out for both parties.
  21. This comes up a lot but the videos didn't look like that live. It's most likely transferred from a VHS which is where the vast majority of archival footage was held even in the early 2000s. This doesn’t translate well to a modern 1920x1280 LCD monitor with a 120MHz refresh rate. In other words it wasn't made for the medium you're watching it in now. This is why you can watch something like Ben-Hur and still have it look very high-res; it was filmed to be seen in high-res.
  22. I'll give Jeter credit for playing SS and being there to make the play. I guess that's really what made it a great play. The flip itself wasn't that amazing. You see a more difficult turn for a 2B during a double play almost weekly. Like I said though, the stakes are relevant. It's a cool play, a nice play, but I've seen people call it the greatest defensive play of all time. Please. I do agree though it was necessary. Not a chance he's out without Jeter's toss, and as I mentioned the poor baserunning, I don't think Giambi thought there was even a play to be made there.
  23. It was bang-bang but he looks pretty clearly out at :34 (as clear as it can be anyway) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApoJk9X7Vto. Certainly not an egregiously bad call if he was safe, and no way that gets overturned even if replay were around. Nobody will ever know if he actually hit his leg at :34 but it sure looks like he did. Better baserunning probably avoids that tag though.
  24. I mean.... maybe overrated. but lame? Just first now realizing that you guys aren't talking about Dwight Clark. I was definitely talking about Dwight Clark who made a catch that happens basically every week.
