  1. I don't watch college football, just never got into it and the format of things is a big reason why. I think if you didn't go to one of those big time schools, it's much harder to get into. I loved watching Ron Dayne, but that was about the extent of my interest. Just watching him trample guys in that UCLA Rose Bowl was one of the best things I've ever seen as a fan. There are just too many teams. It's that simple for me. In basketball, the large tournament works because you can pack the games in much more tightly. I don't watch regular season, just tune in for March and still have fun. I appreciate they finally went with a playoff in football, but it's still sort of presenting the same issue with the last teams out being controversial every year. As a casual observer, watching Alabama and George and Clemson go at it every year seems pretty boring too. I think if they made the field about 12 teams that would remove a lot of the gray area. Your Boise States and UCFs get to dance and can't complain anymore. And it's highly unlikely the 13th and 14th bubble team are good enough to do anything in the playoff anyway. If I had grown up with a 12 team playoff in NCAA the Badgers probably would have qualified a lot and I'd be a much bigger follower. The Bowl system is just totally alienating for me. Just this big slop of random meaningless games. I guess some people love bowl season but I just never understood it. Totally anticlimactic and lame to me.
  2. Cobb hasn't hit 900 yards since 2014. He's a slot WR role player that we are paying star money. I'll sick with vastly overrated. He's the type of guy New England lets walk and replaces with a vet minimum guy for the same result. He's the prototype for the mess we are in.
  3. It was 24-0 at half. Yes, they got their teeth kicked in by Detroit. It is pretty easy to outgain when you go down three touchdowns. If that were any other team you'd agree and not explain it as anything other than a drubbing.
  4. Going to be one hell of an NLC.
  5. Given that his target is $2mm and he does 10% a year it is probably somewhere close to 5% (plus the match so 10%) of 100k household. Give or take a few dollars here and there and that he probably started beneath that and will end higher. It's not like you have a flat salary for 35 years.
  6. Just went back to look at their schedule out of curiosity: Redskins: 7 Vikings tie: 9 Rams: 17 Patriots: 7 Seahawks: 3 Vikings: 3 Cardinals: 7 Those are the Packers second-half point totals against those teams. So besides LAR, they were awful in all those games. To me, this is more indicative than "games decided by X points or less," because a couple of those games are pretty weak. They lost to DET by 8, but really got their teeth kicked in. In the last Vikings game, they're down 10 entering the 4th and end up losing by 7, but the outcome was never really in question and they pretty got dominated after the very beginning. The second half is what happens after someone has a chance to adjust, IMO that's where separation really happens in most NFL games. Most games are still in question at halftime, and the Packers have been an atrocious 2H team this year. I got more curious, so I wanted to see how they stack up quarter by quarter. The Packers are actually one of the better 1Q offenses in the NFL, coming in 8th in scoring. But they drop to 21st in the 2nd, 14th in the 3rd and 20th in the 4th. For as often as they've been behind, that is pretty alarming for a team with Aaron Rodgers. That would seem to support the idea that they are having big trouble with in-game adjustments. This is, in a way, my long-winded way of saying that I think their "close games" line is maybe a bit disingenuous. Adjustments are probably one of the bigger components of winning in the NFL, and they've been really bad at them.
  7. Yeah, but if you are like most people, your spending peaks during child rearing/milestones like buying houses and cars, etc. and into the 40s you have more to invest if you so choose, which helps inflate your projections if you choose to do that. The healthcare costs usually rise, but many other things go down. You are hopefully no longer paying a mortgage, commuting far less, do not have dependents, etc. For most people the 20s and 30s are the most important not only because of the time you give your investment, but if you can save mentally during that very taxing time you can most likely do it later on at a higher rate.
  8. That's not really sound logic. They beat the Bears by 1. Was that not a miracle because it was close? Rodgers is insane by default, that was my point. He so consistently goes down the field to get a FG or TD with 55 seconds left that it became an expectation. Except this year, that wasn't happening and you were left with what the Packers have been for some time, a mediocre to slightly below football team held up by one dude. You keep harping on the 5 losses but don't mention the 49ers or Bears wins. The fact is this team isn't good. In 2008 they had 7 losses by 4 points or less and made the jump to 11-5 the next season. I think that is entirely possibly, but this year, they were not good and it was not bad luck. It was far too consistent to be bad luck.
  9. I doubt it would be that drastic. Your salaries would likely increase along the way assuming you are in professional careers which would help negate some of that inflation and make that $4mm a lot less daunting.
  10. Might as well put it on your headstone You also predicted 8-9 wins....so... Sure, whatever. Since I know you'd be in the line 4-5 deep pointing it out nonstop if they'd gone 13-3, I don't really care. There are several guys in the thread using expressions like "stupid" and "good grief" when I insinuated a 4-win team with Rodgers was possible. And for good measure... I don't see them winning more than 9 games, possibly fewer, and I think Gute fires McCarthy and brings in his own guy, which he probably wants to do now but can't.
  11. So they are five Rodgers miracles away from being 9-2-1. Fans are always convinced a team is better than it is. Really, you can go up and down most bad team's schedules and make arguments for how close they are to contending. Fans of nearly every team do it every year. Very few are getting massacred week in and week out. Let's keep in mind one of their wins WAS a Rodgers miracle and they very nearly lost at home to the 2-10 Niners. They're not good. They can't close out a game and have disappeared for quarters at a time. At every turning moment in almost every game, they fail...that's not hard luck, it's the mark of a team that hasn't learned how to win yet.
  12. The other issue with shutting it down early, which is moot if you have "enough," is that a ton of growth occurs once the balance is large. It's exponential. That stops when you start taking it out. If you stop at 55 rather than 60 you are giving up a ton of growth; it's much more substantial than the period from 30 to 35, for example.
  13. Power of compounding. A couple making ~90k together that saves 1/5 of their income yearly is within reason to expect a ~$4 million nest egg at 65. You could go less than 1/5 and still have a lot of money. Time is your best friend. You start early and grow accustomed to setting it aside, but it also has time to grow. $1 million by retirement age is a fairly easy sum to reach for somebody on $50k income. You could do that with very little relative sacrifice.
  14. In that first bracket of players you mentioned, only Daniels is really a surprise. Cobb is always hurt and a vastly overrated player; I was calling for his release last summer, many have been on him for a while. King has been nothing but an OK hurt player. Rodgers, at this point, can't be called surprising when he gets hurt. Bulaga is done. Wilkerson was a total crapshoot entering the year. In the second group, many of those guys did not underperform. They did what they have done for years, be average or worse on bloated deals. But I don't see any of their seasons as surprising in the least. Point is, you can do that here and there; we were doing it all over the roster. As I said, without fan goggles, it was easy to see they were hanging on by threads in a lot of different places. You just sort of had the sense things were right on the verge of blowing up unless Rodgers went insane. I still think they are close to a championship level again, just because the line between those two areas is paper thin when you have Rodgers.
  15. Maybe there isn’t actually a problem? I don’t know why so many people are on Murphy or Rodgers here. They’ve made it clear that Gute will have input on the hire, and Rodgers won’t be involved in the process. Until they’ve proven that they’ve screwed those up, don’t they at least deserve the chance to let the process play out? There is where I am. The chickens came home to roost on a bunch of bad contracts. It was, without fan goggles, a fairly predictable outcome before the season.
  16. http://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-watch-packers-associate-coach-winston-moss-stares-down-reporters-video/i7o20p9vzqa51fekwc2ubbk4r
  17. I don't get that narrative at all. Like 95% of the state wanted McCarthy fired so why is it because Rodgers wanted it? It seems pretty likely other guys did too. Listening to them speak, I don't get the sense at ALL that Murphy and BK are in Rodgers's pocket. Murphy was pretty assertive when he said Aaron wouldn't be in the coach-hiring discussion. Neither one comes off to me as a pushover. Honestly, I think it's pretty telling that after Rodgers has been blasted by numerous loose cannons, like Jennings, Finley, Moss, his own family, etc., he has never aired out his dirty laundry publicly. That's an incredible amount of restraint, especially considering a guy like Jennings who has built his 2nd career completely on the back of bashing Aaron Rodgers. All I can see from these episodes is that Rodgers, large ego not withstanding, has a level of maturity these guys do not.
  18. Jeez, as somebody that whiffs on these things every year and whose fantasy football team can't seem to ever win 6 games, I'm on some kind of roll this year. I had the Brewers losing in the NLCS and pretty much nailed this: viewtopic.php?f=156&t=36339&start=240 I might as well go out now and say I like the Bucks to make the ECF.
  19. Moss being on the staff is honestly one of the most damning things agaisnt McCarthy. The guy sounds like an absolute dope, can't compose a sentence without typos or grammatical errors, has no professionalism whatsoever and the temperament of a small child. I cannot believe that guy was an associate head coach of an NFL team. Very weird he felt the need to add Rodgers specifically to that tweet. And why is tweeting anyway? Sure seems odd for an NFL coach to be doing that midseason. Good on Philbin for putting that dog down.
  20. Yeah, I was going to say, but you beat me to it. The offense was just fine in 2016. It was on fire at the end of the season. On the subject of Hundley, while we're at it, this mess has made me wonder if the guy was actually all that bad. They look like the same team they were with him running the show last year.
  21. 40 points was hyperbole, I didn't actually mean they'd have to score 40 points. Can we read between the lines a little here? The point is that I don't believe McCarthy won't take extra joy in beating GB. As far as the 2014 NFCCG, turtle mode was the correct mode. The slide down after the pick, IMO, was worse than Bostick. I don't remember who that was, Burnett? He had a pasture in front of him and goes down at the behest of Peppers with five minutes left in the game. That's a play you make with 45 seconds left. Not 5 minutes. McCarthy's turtle calls were supposed to do nothing but milk timeouts off the board which they did. The players lost that game in an appalling display of melt. Remember that was a game almost NOBODY had them winning and they dominated it for 57 minutes or so.
  22. The bizarre exchange with Moss last summer was the first sign of something awry IMO.
  23. OK, but me saying he worked hard was not some kind of attempt at saying he shouldn't be fired. He was not a good fit for GBP anymore, the end. I also agree the Rodgers prime stuff is played out. They were in position numerous times to be in the Super Bowl and player execution was a huge reason it didn't happen. I refuse to pin the 2014 NFCCG on McCarthy. This roster has very likely been extremely overrated for a long time. McCarthy was as sick of TT's lack of aggressiveness as anybody. Plenty of blame to go around from to TT to MM to DC to AR. Basically no other team has multiple titles recently other than NE. The Packers have been very similar to PIT and NO. Nothing was "wasted," they were competing with the league's elite for the last decade.
  24. Let me clarify I doubt McDaniels is the guy, but in a league where you can be fired a year or two from winning a title, I don't really have any issues with players or coaches "hanging teams out to dry." Happens in businesses all over the world every day. Always look out for yourself. That's all he did IMO.
  25. What is the big deal about McDaniels bailing on Indy? I don't get it. So he took another chance to be a HC then realized he didn't want to do it there. What if he realized quickly it was a toxic environment for him? There are so many variables there I don't understand why it's a big deal at all. People reneg on job offers every day. It seems like one of those things a radio guy decided to be indignant about and then people just ran with it...I couldn't care less about him doing that there if the Packers determined he was their guy. And you're done being a fan if they hire him? Really? But not after they sign Johnny Jolly?
