  1. I feel like you might've missed my first statement. Of course I'm assuming. So is everyone else on this forum since none of us are in the Brewer's FO. I'm reading between the lines. You give the HC job to someone that might deserve it, but not a high ranking candidate and then name a potential up and comer (taking the same path as CC did) as assistant HC? If Murphy wasn't part of that decision, he'd be looking over his shoulder constantly. No, 70 isn't a death sentence. But Bob Uecker sitting in a booth for half of the Brewer games is irrelevant to how many head coaches have the energy and ability to coach into their 70s. Last three WS coaches: Bruce Bochy: 68 years old. Has been a head coach since 1995. So he was about 41 when he first became a HC. Won multiple WS Joe Espada - 48 years old. Brian Snitker - 68 years old (now). Head Coach since 2016. Was 61 when he started as HC. Snitker might be the most relevant to Murphy's situation. But again... the point was more about Week's being named Assistant HC than Murphy's age. Just looks like he is keeping the seat warm to me.
  2. We struggled at 2B and 3B offensively all of last year (aside from short bursts from Turang and Monestario), Toro hits 444/524/778/1302 (in 21 PAs), and still couldn't get bigger cup of coffee. Most like a AAAA or backup utility guy, but would've been nice to see a bit more of him. For Chad Patrick, looks like a high K rate guy, but also high walks and hits/9. Not a great combo. But looks like SP depth. Maybe they see something in his repertoire to tweak?
  3. I referenced this in my wrap-up of the game Sunday (I swear someone is reading our threads and stealing the ideas. 😂). My take is scheme. It is happening on early downs and in run formations, so if they are doing pass rush stunts... it is scheme. If this is some sort of run coverage... it is dumb and also scheme related. They are getting an OL into that hole to block the MLB, so there isn't much chance of him covering it. In the second half, they did far less of this... and not surprisingly, the run defense solidified as did the defense as a whole.
  4. Clearly, I'm only guessing what is going on behind the scenes. Most people see Murphy given the job - probably the only HC job he would've been asked for an interview. He isn't exactly a "hot commodity". People see it as a "status quo" pick or a cheap solution. I guess I'm seeing the potential for more here. No idea how long he wants to coach, but sure...he could do it to 70. I'm going to guess that only the best managers actually get to manage to 70. That doesn't seem very "average" to me. In a lesser role? Perhaps, but not in the HC role. Hopefully, he leads us to 3 WS rings and retires happy! 😄 But it also wouldn't surprise me to see him helping usher Weeks to the role - given the titles and situation. If he wasn't involved in bringing in Weeks and the title given Weeks, he can't feel very secure in his role as HC... and I doubt the working relationship would be very strong.
  5. 99.9% of these trades end up impacting either club by less than 2.0 WAR. That stat was totally made up, but probably correct. 😉
  6. Huh... CC is actually older than I thought. I'm still avoiding that distinction, but probably not for much longer. Given Pat Murphy is 64, I'm doubting he will have a long tenure as a HC. Pat's age makes it more likely that Weeks is being groomed for that.
  7. Rod Carew and Paul Molitor were infamously bad as hitting coaches (I think Tony Gwynn too?). Often it is the people that really had to work at something to be good (or even half-way decent) are the people that make the better coaches at it. Those with oodles of natural skill often struggle relating to those that don't.
  8. As much as I like Owen, he isn't the type of player to prevent us from acquiring other players at that position. Frankly, Owen's defensive flexibility doesn't make this as much of an overlap anyway. And just like the trade for Owen Miller, this is throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks.
  9. I called it a good move from the beginning. Not that I thought that much of Dobbs, but because they gave up practically nothing to get an experienced backup at a time when they had a 5th round rookie QB starting and a UDFA rookie on the practice squad. The fact that he looked great in two games has been "splashy", but only the most clueless of Viking fans are talking about him being their future. Though to be fair, "clueless" might include a lot of Viking fans. 😂
  10. I referenced my concern with Doubs this year in the Steeler's game thread. In his second year where most players make a jump, he has plateaued. He is no better this year than he was at the end of last year. Ok, not great. Makes some splashy catches, but is rarely there when the team needs a tough 1st down. I had hopes he was a Donald Driver type player - smart, not overly big/fast, good hands, good #2/ave #1 WR. But he has flat-lined as a #3 at best. Reed and Wicks are looking more like our go-to WRs lately. I'm really surprised by Doubs lack of impact (other than TDs).
  11. Yes. If you don't tailgate, go to Kopps. Bah... do both. 😉
  12. Fangraph's summary makes perfect sense here: Not only was Bryson Stott blocking Dunn, but Rodolfo Castro and Kody Clemens each have a similar profile but with louder tools. Both Mendez and Moore have 2025 40-man roster timelines, so the team has two full years to develop them further before either can be considered on deck to contribute in Philly. Dunn’s power gives him a bigger ceiling than I’d forecast for either Mendez or Moore, despite those two each being at least five years younger than Dunn, but if Dunn isn’t going to be an everyday second baseman, he has to become a viable defender at at least one more position to play any kind of meaningful role for Milwaukee. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/brewers-add-to-2024-infield-mix-with-oliver-dunn-trade/
  13. Wait... we traded for who?? Oh OlivER Dunn.... Nevermind.
  14. Yeah, I'm patient to wait and see how the team gels, but the really, really poor defensive approach by the team from a defensive minded coach is a red flag. I didn't expect the team to be top 5 defense, but in the 20s? Dame's shooting is oddly horrible too, so there is probably much to gain when he ramps back up. Would be nice to see them fill Stott's spot too. All being said (new rookie coach, new offensive coach, Giannis+Dame figuring each other out)... It will easily be into the 2nd half of the year before we could see this team stabilize.
  15. Nuts. Two back-to-back posts about Kopps (in another thread) and now I'm hungry... Best burgers, best custard.
  16. Yes. The original before Culvers. Kopps on Silver Spring was my college hangout (MSOE). But now when we come into town for a Brewer game, we hit Kopps on Layton all the time. My kids absolutely love it. But oddly, the one on Bluemound doesn't have as good of custard. It is always half melted.
  17. Still not worse than our recent options. And to avoid being political... I'm including both sides of the aisle. Wish I could put that in blue... 😖
  18. Some thoughts on this game: Love looked much better than his numbers. One INT was lucky, many drops on the game. Threw some nice deep balls, though I hold my breath on each one. I spend a lot of time watching our middle DL. Originally wondering why Clark looked like wet tissue paper to run through. Early in the game, the DL (all of them) were jumping into some gap at the snap. The result was leaving gaping holes that the RBs ran through. I'm sure there is some defensive logic to why they were doing that, but it DID NOT WORK. Later, they played more straight-up run D and looked much better against the run. I'm thinking this is much more the defensive scheme than the players. Fire Joe Barry please. Reed, Wicks, and Musgrave are really coming on now. They look great. Doubs looks good, but plateaued. Not much improvement from last year. Watson... dude, where's my car? Really looks like an athlete and not a FB player. That saddens me very much. Josiah Deguara - must have pictures of someone to stay on the team. Really? You can't even shift one foot to block? You have one job. Owens is starting to fit in better. He looked lost in the pre-season. He looks competent now. Probably not enough to make the Olympics, but sufficient for now. Gary has looked much less effective the last couple games. First game where Dillon outplayed a healthy Jones. Dillon has been strong lately. I wonder if he can take some of Deguara's HB duties?
  19. Well, CC did have that odd batting stance, and we struggled hitting, so... A few thoughts on Murphy: Much of CC's success seemed to be in paying attention to advanced metrics to guide his decision making Second most important job of the manager is maintaining the team unity and locker room. I have no idea what sort of manager he is or will be, but hopefully he can do these 2 things. It doesn't require retaining the most expensive manager in the league to do #1 and #2. Spend the money elsewhere. We are probably into a mini-rebuild around our younger position players, Murphy managing that seems low risk. If he can't handle #1 and #2, we can find someone in 2-3 years when those rookies and AA/AAA players are hitting their primes.
  20. Prague has always been a bit of a fantasy... but Argentina might be lovely.
  21. To be fair, taking the high road disqualifies him for the Cubs... Cardinals too. 😝
  22. Yes, what Outlander said. I'm projecting how I expect a 35 yo to age. Average of 115 OPS+ on his career, peaked at 30, and posted 111, 122, 108 OPS+ the last three years. Every player has a "bell-curve" to their production and I'm just projecting about where he will slide on the downside of his career. Maybe I'm undershooting him with 100-105 OPS+, but I'd bet the under for 110 OPS+. The guy will be a decent asset for the Tigers (as he would've been for us). But I'm more of the mindset that we should be rebuilding this year and looking for longer term assets. Canha is more a stop-gap player. Other equivalent stop-gaps (Brandon Belt) are available, too.
  23. Well, he looked bad in TC as a rookie, then went into the doghouse with the suspension. Nice to see him work his way out of it. Has JRJ played much at center aside from the few snaps in pre-season? I kind of doubt he is ready for that. I wouldn't mind seeing JRJ & Rhyan (and perhaps Nijman/Walker) alternate series or halves as an in-season competition. I know the OL wants continuity, but at some point you need to evaluate the players too.
  24. I see a lot of worry about "rebuild", but I wonder why. Do we actually want last year's offense on repeat? Yes, it was improved with Cahna and Santana, but it wasn't really great either. Canha was a great find last year and he played great for us. But his 120 OPS+ wasn't going to last. He'll more likely revert back to a 100-105 OPS+ guy with poor defense. While his $11.5M might not be huge, his presence on the team limits our flexibility too. Our best spots to improve our offense is at DH and 1B. People didn't like it when we trade for Canha, hated him 3 games into his Milwaukee career, and hate it when we trade him away... Just be happy we caught lightning in a bottle and move on. Watching NYM and the Padres should show that even the big pockets teams need to spend money smartly. Even more so with the Brewers.
  25. Ok, please stop with the personal shots. Debate about the issues all you like. But taking shots about other's opinions can stop now.
