  1. Here's Alex's fashion statement: Those Socks should make for perfect strike zone for the Ump. Maybe Presly had some poor calls and wants to show the umps where his Kneecap his and where below is? I like the look for that fact. You can say the strike zone is from above the socks to below you're jersey lettering above the belt. Maybe I'm old, but I still prefer this look to the sloppy full pants look that Peralta was sporting. Looks like they were 2 inches too long.
  2. I keep forgetting that he is only 21 also. Good trade bringing him in.
  3. Great news! Finally. What that didn't say was that Jungmann walked five. Man, is he a mess...the Brewers do employ a sports psychologist, one wonders if Jungmann has any self-confidence at all right now. They need send him to extended ST right now. He is all messed up this year
  4. Aaron Hill: 273/344/429/773 Jean Segura: 300/331/452/783 Jonathon Villar: 306/406/446/852 Hill for Segura has been pretty much a wash. Having Villar has been a nice upgrade at SS.
  5. If this current Brewers team was competing for a World Series I don't think he'd be up yet either since Villar has been playing so well. Yes he would, but not to replace Villar, but to move Villar to second. Scooter is playing the worst on the infield.
  6. 2) If 10% of waivers claims becoming MLB-viable players is a good success rate, than Melvin's far more shrewd & successful than many on this board would ever dare admit they should give him credit for. I think your forgetting how many of these guys end up in the minors or cut after ST. Then to be a success, the player has to be a regular starter or BP regular. Most that actually make the team are bench players or end of the BP guys.
  7. Villar had been an awesome pickup. When Arcia is called up, Villar will be starting somewhere. Probably at second, given how Scooter is playing.
  8. Unless Barnes is inconsistent, i doubt he sees MiLB life again
  9. Fish! I forgot that I've smoked fish before also. Northern pike on a plank. Turns out awesome and it "melts" the bones My method for keeping a kettle grill the 225-250 range is this: -Water pan under the meat -12-15 briquettes and wood blocks one side -add 9 briquettes each hour after (I have a hinged grill to make it easy to add) - fine tune with top vent and leave the bottom fully open Not set it and forget it, but I like to watch it closely anyway
  10. QS is 3 runs or less in 6 innings. This was better than a QS. 4.5 ERA vs 1.50 It's kind of like saying Rickie Henderson was above average at steals. It's true, but very inadequate in description.
  11. We hope, but the future promised to no one. Never draft based on we have our we need. Trades can fix that.
  12. I perused through our pitching depth charts and picked out some interesting performances by fringe pitchers so far this year: [pre]Name Age Level ERA IP HR WHIP ▴ BA OPS BAbip H9 BB9 SO9 SO/W Comments Burkhalter, David 20 A 1.99 45.1 1 0.926 0.212 0.585 0.257 7.1 1.2 6.75 5.67 Nothing overly flashy, but keeps producing and limits his walks Perrin, Jon 23 A+ 2.59 59 1 0.966 0.228 0.531 0.305 7.8 0.9 9.46 10.33 College pitcher that quickly skipped past A ball. Very stingy on walks, but nice K rate also Woodruff, Brandon 23 AA 2.69 60.1 2 1.061 0.216 0.565 0.294 7 2.5 9.55 3.76 Almost certainly finding his way on the top 25 this year. Size, stuff and performance coming together nicely. Peralta, Freddy 20 A 3.31 35.1 1 1.16 0.206 0.584 0.3 7.1 3.3 11.72 3.54 Crazy K rate for a starter. Proven very hard to hit in his first stint at A ball Ortega, Jorge 23 AA 3.88 48.2 6 1.253 0.278 0.747 0.295 10.2 1.1 4.99 4.5 Doing Ok in his bump to AA. Lack of walkds keeps his WHIP manageable, but lack of Ks limit his ability to move up. Salas, Javier 24 AA 3.79 35.2 1 1.262 0.187 0.616 0.234 5.8 5.6 7.32 1.32 Up and down this year at AA, but a someone to keep an eye on Ventura, Angel 23 A+ 3.43 39.1 1 1.271 0.234 0.632 0.327 7.8 3.7 10.07 2.75 Angel is hittable, but has a nice K rate to go with it. Owenby, Drake 22 A 3.05 41.1 4 1.234 0.248 0.667 0.295 8.7 2.4 7.84 3.27 Nothing overly great, but nothing overly bad either. Suter, Brent 26 AAA 4.89 42.1 1 1.346 0.313 0.807 0.389 11.1 1.1 7.44 7 Got to give props to Brent at AAA. He is getting hit in Colorado (no surprise), but BB rate is great and K rate is ok. Wang, Wei-Chung* 24 AA 3.62 49.2 3 1.389 0.28 0.715 0.329 9.2 3.3 6.34 1.94 Similar to Drake: Nothing overly great, but nothing overly bad either. WHIP is pretty high, but limits the damage Yamamoto, Jordan 20 A 2.51 43 1 1.093 0.242 0.612 0.325 8.2 1.7 9 5.38 Diplan, Marcos 19 A 1.69 42.2 1 1.148 0.174 0.552 0.272 5.5 4.9 11.81 2.43 For relievers, I pay close attention to the K and BB rates and less to the ERAs (since they are very volatile due to small sample size) Harber, Conor 22 A 4.24 17 1 1.412 0.25 0.695 0.385 8.5 4.2 12.71 3 Getting hit around and walks are up, but K rate makes me pay attention. Olczak, Jon 22 A+ 4.87 20.1 1 1.279 0.24 0.656 0.354 8 3.5 11.95 3.38 Same as Conor Chapman, Jaye 29 AAA 3.38 24 3 0.917 0.174 0.539 0.226 5.6 2.6 11.25 4.29 Older pitcher, but he came around late. Nice BB and K rates. Villegas, Kender 23 A+ 4.6 29.1 2 1.193 0.274 0.677 0.367 9.5 1.2 10.43 8.5 8.5 K/BB makes me pay attention Gagnon, Drew 26 AAA 2.73 29.2 0 0.978 0.175 0.484 0.261 5.5 3.3 10.31 3.09 Move to the BP was beneficial and showing decent results in Colorado Magnifico, Damien 25 AAA 1.93 23.1 0 1.2 0.217 0.539 0.305 6.9 3.9 9.64 2.5 Magnifico keeps getting better the last couple years. His K rater is nice to see, as it was always low for a pitcher that throws as hard has he does. BB rater is still concerning for a closer. Barnes, Jacob 26 MLB 1.21 22.1 1 0.94 0.184 0.503 0.25 5.6 2.8 9.27 3.29 Barnes was just called up and he has been pitching well the last few years. Archer, Tristan 25 AA 3.74 33.2 2 1.04 0.237 0.621 0.287 8.3 1.1 7.49 7 Low BB rate, low WHIP makes him interesting even with lower K rate Smith, Gage 25 A+ 2.7 23.1 1 1.071 0.231 0.622 0.282 8.1 1.5 7.33 4.75 Ditto for Archer.[/pre]
  13. Shuckers starting pitcher Adrian Houser put in a quality start, but didn't factor into the decision. He allowed one run on seven hits in six innings, striking out six and walking three. Yet another case where "quality start" really does a poor job describing Houser's outing. Nice to hear that he is dealing again after a rough start.
  14. I could see the team just saying to themselves that he's never going to be a decent starter going forward, and he wouldn't be worth putting in the bullpen. I can see the first part of that statement, but not the second part. I have to imagine that giving Peralta 1/2 year in the BP is worth seeing if you can reclaim some use out of him. He still has some good stuff and could be useful in the BP. Plus, spending some time in the BP might give him a chance to step back into the SP role next year.
  15. Because you have a roster of 25 - not 3. Plus you can expand that to 30 or so when you add in depth, it's even more difficult. All-stars can carry a team to a degree, and you can hide weak players to a degree, but winning in baseball rarely happens when a team carries lots of crappy players. And if teams like the LAA, Cubs and NYY that have far more resources ($$$) than the Brewers can't field a competitive team every year, I'm not sure what makes us think we can.
  16. That's pretty much it. You can't take some supplements and sit on the couch. They don't make you stronger by themselves, they shorten your recovery time. Not only do they allow for an increased workout regimen in the offseason, but if you can lessen the fatigue on your body from playing the day before, you will likely perform better. Also realize that "PEDs" is a generic term and not a specific drug. They can cover different banned substances that have different intended purposes.
  17. I'd say that if are finding viable MLB players on 10% of waiver pickups, you are doing pretty good.
  18. Perez, and pundits complain about having Arcia already. But we over draft later.
  19. But what does that mean really? I'd hope he check up on far more players than that.
  20. I still think Jungmann will be a decent starter. And Gagnon has a chance as a reliever. But not a great haul overall.
  21. While I don't consider Vaughn a core piece, I'd rather not trade him off either. I think he has some good potential as a 3pt shooter. And those are in great need by the Bucks...
  22. Woah... I've been away from the Off Topic too long! Great summer thread! I currently am a the Weber kettle stage. Keeping in the 225-250 range is pretty easy, but any lower than that is difficult. So I am researching me next investment. I'm a wood/charcoal all the way guy, so propane or electric is a pass. I'm debating if I want a big barrel type or separate the grill and smoker. If you have wood chips, soaking does help, but you need to soak it for a couple hours. But as others have said, chunks are better. I gave up on chips. Natural charcoal burns at a lower temp, but the sizes are also all over the place. So I stuck with briquettes and fiddle with the top vent. To be technical, - Smoking = Under 180 degrees - BBQ = Under 250 degrees with indirect heat - Note, its not about the sauce! - Grilling = Any temp with direct heat. Most of us are northerners. Southerners are taught that in kindergarten. My favorites to BBQ - Whole Turkey or Breasts - the only way to have turkey! - Pork Shoulder - pretty easy if you watch the temps -BTW, if you haven't had mustard BBQ sauce on pulled pork, you don't know what you are missing. - Ribs: Still my nemesis. My last batch turned out OK, but I still can't beat famous Dave's. Up coming: - I bought 1/2 a cow this year, so I kept a brisket. So looking forward to trying it!
  23. The Braves are some kind of terrible. 110 losses is not out of the picture for that team. They are currently averaging less than 7 wins per month and are currently on pace for 57 wins. Blah! They even tank better than we do...
  24. Its really too bad that these Taxi-squad transactions aren't segregated from the "real" transactions. That would make this thread a lot easier to maintain.
