  1. .076 batting average Maybe a plaque up in the batting cage?
  2. Optimistic? Saying that two guys that throw in the upper 90s have #1 potential is too optimistic? Especially with the caveat of their biggest weakness removed (Jeffress' control and Roger's health). And by saying "potential", I'm just pointing out the high-end, not that they are guaranteed. BTW, Jeffress is listed at #100 for 2009. Rogers was at #44 for 2006 (same link). Injury was the only reason Rogers dropped off. Also, remember that Ben Sheets (BA #5 for 2001) took 4 years at MLB ball before he pitched like a #1 SP. I'm not saying that Rogers and Jeffress will max out at #1 next year...
  3. Can Rodgers stay healthy? Can Jeffress show some more control? Even if the answer is yes to both of those questions, the Brewers need some top of the rotation help. I would say that if the answer is yes to both of those questions, they would help the top of the rotation. Both of those players have the potential to be #1 SPs. They still have a ways to go to fulfill that, but those two questions are the biggest hurdles those two have to overcome to maximizing their potential. At worst (again assuming "yes" to those two Qs), they end up being #2-3 type SPs.
  4. Any top prospect that might be blocked or is on the path Mat is apparently with the Brewers likely is on the block for the right price. JJHardy7, didn't we trade you to the Scccrapiest Twin Fan forum for that GomezSpeedKilz guy last off-season? And I really miss that OOOOOverbay4Prez guy, but PrinceEatMeat was ready to join the forum, so.... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif The Brewers have more a history of moving the blockade than moving the prospect. Hardy/Escobar, Overbay/Fielder, etc... And in this case, most likely Fielder being traded provides the open position (be it 3B, LF or 1B). Granted, they have treated Gamel differently than they have with other prospects to come up (Fielder, Escobar, Braun, Weeks, Hardy, etc..). Perhaps you could make a case that they are playing him similar to the way they handled Hart when he broke into the majors... Prince is the most likely to be traded. Braun and Gallardo the least. In between is just about everyone else... It would just depend on who comes back in a Fielder trade and if the other team wants Gamel for something that brings us back more value (i.e. another SP).
  5. Another vote for No. He was the best pitcher on the team for most of his career here, but as others have said, not even close to the best all time. Sheets had one dominating year (2004), 4 years of good, but injury filled years (2005-8) and 3 average years (2001-3). At this point, Gallardo looks like he will end up better than Sheets. Compare Gallardo's first 4 years (79 starts) to Sheets last 4 (94 starts) and you get pretty comparable numbers. The difference at this point is Sheets dominating year and the 3 so-so years that Sheets took to figure out MLB pitching (that Gallardo didn't need). Sheet's situation reminds me a little bit of Paul Molitor. Except Molitor overcame his injuries and put up numbers worthy of the Hall of Fame. Sheets won't. Molitor also played for the Brewers 4 years longer than Sheets. 50% is a big difference. A reminder to all the WS nods: if winning the World Series for the Brewers was a requirement, then no Brewer would have their number retired...
  6. Just happened to read that Wade Bogg's 3000 hit was a HR. So to commemorate it, the TB Rays changed that seat from the normal blue to yellow and left a plaque at the spot the ball landed. Something on that level would seem appropriate. The fact that the memorable event took place here by our team has more meaning in this instance, IMO.
  7. It sure killed Lincecum's career. If he is found in possession of a bag or worse, in an accident while DUI, yeah, it would ruin his career. I was only trying to point out that just because he won't be tested and banned, doesn't make him free and clear... its still illegal. Course, Lincecum pitches in California... If Rogers pitches out of the bullpen next season, won't his innings actually go down? How does that help his development? I had that same thought. Made sense for Jeffress, since he hadn't pitched in so long to ease him back in. Ditto for Rogers last year. But there shouldn't be any reason for Rogers to pitch less than 140 innings next year. I suppose as an multi-inning reliever, Jeffress could reach 90-100 innings, assuming he is effective.
  8. I'll pass on the obvious conflict here (i.e. the effects of smoking marijuana on a person) and point out that marijuana is still illegal. Getting arrested for possession can effect a persons career also. For some reason, people focus on drug testing in the MiLB and forget about the legal ramifications.
  9. If Weeks were to leave, I'm pretty sure Lawrie would be our starting 2B... Agreed. I really only meant over Farris. That is almost a backhanded complement. Wasn't intended to be. A couple years ago, I thought Green was more likely to be our starting 3B than Gamel (better D and slightly behind offensively). These last two years at AA have lowered my expectations a bit, while Gamel has hit AAA well. I think still has the potential to be a starting 3B, as injuries might account for a lowered AA offensive output. Or he could max out as a backup MLB player. Hard to say at this point... But I was really only trying to say that since he is good defensively at 3B, there is a good chance it would translate to 2B also.

  11. It seems odd that a flamethrowing former #1 pick with serious injury history wouldn't have had these "motion anaysis tests" done earlier than now. I could be incorrect, but when I read about the analysis, I thought it was a checkup. I was pretty sure they all did that in spring training. But I can't specifically say that Rogers did...
  12. Unless there are lots of spots open on the 40-man, I doubt the Brewers keep both Green and Farris. And Green has the advantage over Farris in everything but speed: - younger (8 months) - power - OBP - versatility: I think most people expect Green to handle 2B well and he is our best defensive 3B (at least among Green/Lawrie/Gamel/McGehee). If Weeks were to leave, I'd prefer Green as our starting 2B over Farris.

  14. According to Baseball America, San Antonio (Padres), Erie (Tigers) and Arkansas (Angels) are all that's left. Assuming the Padres stay in San Antonio, I could see Erie or Arkansas coming after the Brewers but don't see Detroit or California 'courting' Huntsville. We will end up with what's left, and that may be the Brewers. But if Erie or Arkansas came after the Brewers, wouldn't Detroit or California need to take what is left? Where is Erie located anyway? I'm assuming by the Great Lake, but which town? Answered my own question: Erie, PA. For some reason I was thinking "Erie" was a region (ala Caronlina Panthers) and not the town. Not very familiar with PA.
  15. That isn't a bad idea on Taylor's part... We pretty much lost our depth at C above A-ball, as opposed to a crowded 2B/3B. Just questionable if he could pick it up at this point in his career. Either way, its nice to see someone with the ambition to make himself more playable rather than P&Ming about being moved... I suppose its no irony that he is our best defensive 3B-man. I root for Peralta, Merklinger and Green on the 40-man. Congrats to Kintzler for making it already. If they haven't added Dillard or Katin yet, they aren't going to...

  17. I'm not understanding two things: 1) Why are people so panicked about Jeffress' role. The Brewers have never given any indication of keeping him in the pen. I thought it was a great idea to put him in the pen after his suspension. It was part way through the season and was a good way to work him back into some innings and work him back into pitching shape. I'm sure he will be a SP at AAA next year (Rivas, Rogers, and Jeffress: Nashville could miss us...). 2) People insisting on returning Braddock as a starter. Yes, I understand his talent and our need for SPs. But just looking at him and his history: - He has never pitched more than 72 innings in a season. - He had only one successful season as an SP and that was in A-ball. (2007 - 2006 and 2008 were not great results) - He has had several arm injuries/problems.. Lets just be happy he made it as an RP and hope he remains healthy. I think trying to push him back to a starter is asking for trouble with him. Braddock's and Jeffress' situations are very, very different...
  18. A return of Tim Dillard to the 40-man, I imagine, remains a possibility though, doesn't it? But likely not...debate away. I've been a Dillard supporter in the past, but if the Brewers had plans on adding Dillard to the 40-man, why not now with a Sept call-up? Maybe they didn't have a free spot, but as you said, I think its unlikely. I would imagine DeFelice will come back. He had a spot on the MLB team when he got injured, so I would imagine his best chance at another MLB spot is here...

  20. Well, having the Rays in Tampa competing head-to-head with the Yankees, I can see why the Yank's MiLB in Tampa isn't very popular... Imagine having a cubs minor league team in 'Tosa.
  21. nice start, but your trying to prove something based on 10 innings?
  22. Isnt Brevard County nutorious for being a pitchers park? I think it goes beyond that to the whole FSL as a pitcher's league.
  23. I think it's that the claiming team that has priority can: 1) Work out a trade for the claimed player... That was the part I was unsure on. I thought the trade could only happen if no one else claimed him... Would be interesting if someone traded for Hoffman now just so he could get #600 with that team. That would be a black eye to the Brewers, IMO.
  24. Doesn't sound like McClendon is mid-90s, but maybe 92-ish. Dillard was mid-90s, but that didn't matter. Stetter was around 93 I think. Kintzler is mid-90s. I thought I heard Lamontagne was also.
  25. I do not hate the Cubs, nor the Cardinals. I cheer when they lose. I laugh whenever Bartman, goats, "Maybe next year", etc... are brought up. I smile when high-priced, low-producing vets weigh down their team. But I do not hate them just because they are our rivals. Hate is for everything that is wrong with baseball. Hate is for changing the game I loved as a kid to one of buying championships. Hate is reserved for the one and only NYY. Yes, they are playing within the rules, blah, blah, blah. But when the art of identifying young talent, developing said talent, and building a team from within is overridden by a team that can just go outspend every other team by a large margin and suck up the best free agents... its ruined the game of baseball I loved as a kid (I was actually liked the NYY then because of the Babe and their history...). Other teams contribute to that of course, but NYY symbolizes to me all that is wrong in baseball.
