  1. Yeah, I had flash-backs to the Selig days (Green, Peterson, Williamson) when reading that. Hopefully, price is one of our last considerations now.
  2. choose not to re-sign There is a problem with the system that needs to be fixed, and ironically, this statement you made is incorrect and is part of the problem (IMO). You have to offer arby to a player and have them turn it down to get compensation. Its not that they just let them walk... But often, its offering arbitration that the smaller market shy away from. Teams with larger payrolls have less of an issue with chancing arbitration with a player. Take Cameron for example. If we were Boston or NY or LAA, I would guess we would have offered him arby instead of letting him go without compensation. I would think a NFL-like compensation system would be better, as it balances your defectors with your signings.
  3. Rivals: The Pick: Josh Sale, 3b/OF, Seattle (Wash.) Bishop Blanchet The Buzz: Sale is one of more intriguing players in the draft, his bat is probably the best among all high school players but his defense is limited to either 1B or a shift to the corner outfield. The Brew Crew may have a tough time keeping him from going to Gonzaga to develop.
  4. I have little to add on who should be picked, as I know nothing about the individual players, but I have a feeling that this year is going to be a "biggest stick" type year. Assuming there isn't an obvious talent gap between the available players (by the time you get to 15, the top players are similar), I'm guessing they go with the player that has the biggest power potential. Alah the Fielder and LaPorta picks. Power is a big hole in our system right now. FWIW, Rivals mock draft has us picking Josh Sale.
  5. ...are people really upset about a 30 year old who's 5 for 43 in the majors being taken off the roster? Only because there were a few other obvious choices that should have happened first. Maybe our AAA OF roster has come off the DL, but we were pretty thin in the first place when we called Stern up. So it seemed rather odd that he was the choice to DFA at this point... Not a big head-scratcher, but add that to the other head-scratcher moves and you just wonder who is black-mailing Melvin anyway...
  6. Nope, Edmonds was activatedand Stern sent to AAA. Then Stern was DFA'd to make room for Loe on the 40-man. And Estrada was sent to AAA to make room for Loe on the 25-man. You've got to keep up with this or you fall behind quickly! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif With as poorly as the pitching has been, I'm sure they will be going with a 13-man pitching staff for the time. So DFA of Suppan will probably be coupled with adding another pitcher.
  7. Stern???? Really? Given the injuries in the AAA OF, that is pretty surprising. Off the top of my head, there are 3 moves I'd make before that: 1) DFA Suppan - dead horse (that can be taken a couple ways...) 2) DFA Cruz - At least Stern was OF insurance. I doubt anyone claims either of these, but I'd take the chance on Cruz first. 3) Zaun to 60-day DL. Well, I guess the Suppan topic lives for another week, when Riske comes back.
  8. Back to the original question.... I posted something similar to this in another thread about trading away an RP (based on current depth). Starters: 1 Gallardo 2 Wolf 3 Bush 4 Capuano 5 Narveson BP 1 Axford 2 Braddock 3 Hoffman 4 Coffey 5 Villanueva 6 Parra 7 Loe 8 Suppan/Estrada - assuming one is released to make room for Loe DL 1 Hawkins 2 Riske - roster move required in 1 week. - Is on 60 day DL, so a 40 man spot needs to be opened. 3 Davis AAA 1 Stetter Seeing that one of Suppan/Estrada will be gone with Loe (my guess is Suppan at this point) and there are three more pitchers on the DL. Suppan can't last much longer. Even if we DFA Suppan &Estrada & Loe, we still need to make room for one more pitcher. And that is leaving Stetter in AAA....
  9. Well, some big changes have occurred, so I'd thought I'd update the situation: Vargas is DFAed, Capuano is up. Loe is called up.... TBD (Suppan/Estrada?) is DFAed - Seems that Estrada has an option left, so sending him to AAA doesn't open a spot for Loe (reading JSOnline and other's posts). Starters: 1 Gallardo 2 Wolf 3 Bush 4 Capuano 5 Narveson BP 1 Axford 2 Braddock 3 Hoffman 4 Coffey 5 Villanueva 6 Parra 7 Loe 8 Suppan/Estrada DL 1 Hawkins 2 Riske - roster move required in 1 week. - Is on 60 day DL, so a 40 man spot needs to be opened. 3 Davis AAA 1 Stetter You know they aren't going to release Davis and Hawkins after signing them this year. They MIGHT release Riske, but that would be unlikely I think. No matter what happens today with Loe coming up, the #8 BP spot is cleared for the next pitcher coming up: Suppan released, Estrada optioned to AAA. Riske/Hawkins to BP or Davis to SP, Narveson to BP. That leaves 2 more moves required (eventually). Assuming Loe doesn't impress, that is one more spot. That leaves a possible trade of Narveson/Villenueva/Coffey/Parra. Especially considering we still have Stetter in AAA for depth. Considering how the Brewer season is going so far, I would almost expect a trade coming soon.
  10. I wouldn't trade Parra, CV, Axford, Braddock or Coffey. I'd trade Suppan and Vargas for an obscure minor league player as fast as I could. Whatever changes the Brewers make to the relief or starting staffs should not be delayed while they try to trade pitchers who are not valuable to anyone for someone they value. Its not going to happen. I completely agree with the last statement there. But it contradicts the first two.... Suppan and Vargas have no trade value, even for an obscure minor leaguer. I almost put them under a "DFA" heading. CV: Yes, he looks pretty good so far this year. The big question is whether he can sustain it. I'm in the camp that trading him now is selling high. Coffey: I like him. Kind of an stand-out personality (sprint from BP, adding $2 to salary numbers, etc...). Parra: Obviously hasn't pitched up to expectations, but at worst an ok RP with the ability to spot start. The thing these three all have in common is that they have value for trading. Most of these threads are started because we want to get X player. I just see a surplus of RPs (or possible RPs) and wonder who we can trade to improve out club, not just dump to make room.
  11. I was just reading some other posts about who should be in the pen and who was injured and who should be DFAed... etc... Just got me thinking that we might have some trade bait in the pen. Normally RPs don't get much in return unless they are high end types, but it might be an opportunity... Who do you think is both expendable and tradeable? Best bets: Coffey - Could bring a decent return. Not a high end RP, but 2nd tier. Wouldn't just trade him to dump him. Villanueva - I like V, but I'm guessing his highest value is right now. He is a decent RP, but I don't see him continuing at this rate. On the Fence: Estrada - Wouldn't bring much in return, but has had a good season so far. Maybe a bit more tradeable if he stays in the MLB club for a while longer with success. Loe - Pretty much the same as Estrada. Parra - Still LH, still throws hard. Lost some of his "potential", but has been OK this year.. Not Expendable Axford - A and B are the RPs we are looking for. In LH and RH versions. Hard throwing and cheap. Braddock - see Axford Not Tradeable Capuano - Not likely someone will bite yet with the injury situation. Hawkins - Pitching poorly, then injured. Hoffman - not with his struggles, and not even SD would want him back for sentimental reasons as they are in a pennant race. Suppan - To dream the impossible dream... Riske - Injury, not happening Vargas - Injury/Loss of Velocity/whatever - no one will want him right now.
  12. Weeks got off to a hot start; I'm sure that's playing a role. He'll probably fade in the balloting But how many people actually allow current stats (and even more so current streaks) bias their voting? I doubt there are too many. I know I keep my homer mind free and clear of objective data like OPS and ERA when I vote for 9 Brewers every time! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  13. 2) Smoking marijuana is no more a character flaw than drinking or smoking cigarettes Save that its illegal and gets you banned from MiLB...
  14. selecting a pot head to me represents a lack vetting prospects for off field issues Wow. No skeletons in your closet that people don't know about? Generally, people like to hide bad habits. And even if he was busted for drugs before, getting the rap sheet on a minor is pretty tough...
  15. If we lost Loe or Capuano in AAA due to promotion or granting FA, I'd give him a shot at AAA. Lefties always get more shots... Familiarity is part of it, sure, but mainly because we remember what he did in our minor league system. Probably should be noted that Melvin traded him at the height of his trade-ability...
  16. So, lets get back to Braddock... How long will he stay? Do you think it was due to a shortage in the BP? He is on the 40-man now, and won't be removed...
  17. I thought Axford had TJ surgery, signed with the Yanks, but didn't through well. We picked him up on a whim and two years after TJ, his velocity picked back up. Relying on memory, however...
  18. There is a time and a place to discuss Don Majkowski. Sorry... Of course, that would be "Majik"
  19. JB, I would tend to agree with your, but seeing that Rivera is playing in AA, every GM must be seeing something we aren't...
  20. TLB, I've had the same thought. I'd almost guarantee that Kottaras will have a better MLB year than Lucroy, but just because he has started well and Lucroy might not be quite ready for MLB yet. BTW, I like the change in avatar and signature. In response to the brewers recent crash?
  21. Hope Macha wouldn't make that mistake again I completely agree that Gamel was handled poorly in him MLB stint. But one might make an argument that the decision to pick McGehee over Gamel at 3B has turned out pretty well...
  22. So, can we sign Schmoe? Is he available? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Personally, I don't think Coco's deal was bad. It wasn't great either... Depends on where you are as a team and where you can spend money. My point was that in not signing Coco, we have had a horrible time closing games, even if you include last year with Hoffman. And spending just about as much money in the mean time (wow, my memory isn't so bad after all). Now, maybe Braddock will come in this year and next and prove me wrong, but I doubt even that would make up for the last 2+...
  23. So when will Hoffman be put on the DL? This is ridiculous! We have almost spent as much money on closers as the Reds have on Coco, and he has only blown 12 saves in the 2+ years in Cincy. That isn't great, but its a heck of a lot better than we have had in that time frame (including Hoffman of last year). Hoffman now has 9 BS in 1+ years. Gagne had 7 in a partial 2008, Torres had 7... That's 23 BS from your main closer in 3 years. And we paid them... Something like $27million?
  24. I would put Kottaras in as DH. When he is catching, perhaps Counsell or Inglett. Not the best choices, but that is what happens when you have injuries... Gallardo would be an embarrassment as a DH (i.e. that the team would rely on him as a DH). He is a nice hitter for a pitcher, but come on...
  25. Well, two pieces of dead weight will be removed this off season: Suppan and Hall's contracts. Those have been two factors over the last couple years to limit our ability to make changes... ~20% of your salary wrapped up right there. Given that with Prince's last year under Brewers control could make next winter rather interesting...
