  1. its been pretty quiet on the signings lately... Big boom, little boom, then quiet... I figured Davis might take some work to sign, but its been quiet on the Heckathorn and Hall fronts also. Anyone have a word?
  2. Yeah, there is a reason we still play the games and don't rely on the paper matchups. Our pitching to swing back to the positive side again by then. Or having Gamel/Hart/Hardy heat up, we could blow them out. Breweres seem to hit Zambrano pretty well also.
  3. Malik Allen = Kurt Thomas I'll explain: A few years ago, both players were good role players for their teams (Heat and Knicks). Now both are over the hill players that have limited roles on the team. Perhaps Thomas is better than Allen straight up (can't say that I have followed either career too closely for the past couple years). But its not a drastic difference. I understand there is some work to undo the poor cap managment of the past, but it is frustrating to see a complete tear-down again. It makes me wonder if the coach/GM will be around long enough for the build-up portion of this tear-down.
  4. Charlie V reminds me too much of Tim Thomas. He got a bit better at rebounding and defense last year, but TT did also in short bursts... I'll take him for one year, but I don't want to see him in a big extension. I like Sessions, but it looks like we will draft PG this year. And Bowen is redundant with MaM on the team. Although it sounds like they can cut him to save more room. Kurt Thomas = Malik Allen Oberto doesn't even have a place here. Gadzuric, Elson, Thomas, Allen are all ahead of him on the bench. If Alexander and MaM can put up 15 PPG/ 6RPG, this is a good deal, but I'm not sure they can....
  5. Wow. I expected the Bucks to move Jefferson, but I expected something in return. Salary cap flexibility is good, but yikes.
  6. Wasn't he injured during the cold streak last year? I seem to remember a bum elbow or something like that.
  7. Someone needs to mention to Ash that only in England do they drive on the left... the rest of Europe is "normal". http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  8. Maybe he is getting some ABs as a precursor to a MLB callup? Replacing Rivera? Just speculation, but it seems that someone doesn't like Rivera much (i.e. Kendall struggling at the plate and Rivera still doesn't get more ABs).
  9. I would think it would effect him to a lesser extent. Wouldn't the humidity have a much greater effect on fly balls than on ground balls? I always assumed ground ball pitchers could pitch anywhere where fly ball pitchers would be better off staying away from certain parks.I was thinking of two ways it would help him: 1) Make any sinking pitches exaggerate (kind of a reverse Coors Field effect) to make them "heavier" pitches than in a normal climate. 2) Typically when GB pitchers get in trouble, its because hitters elevate the ball. Obviously the humidity will neutralize some of those line drive/fly ball hits. Typically every pitcher benefits from #2, but I was thinking Anundsen would benefit more from #1 than the typical FB pitcher like Jeffress.
  10. Gamel had just gone through 2 awful weeks at the plate. 0 BBs with lots of Ks and a low BA. It was very uncharacteristic of the Gamel we knew in the minors. Hits can be fickle (see JJ), but walks take patience and good pitch selection. So when he went from 0 BB in 39ABs to 5 in 23ABs it just a sign that his approach seems to have improved. With these small samples, I'm only looking at a trend, not a long term indicator. BTW, I just wanted to note that the transition I noted above started at the time I started this thread, so your welcome. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  11. < Offsubject gripe>There was a time when journalist (not just sports) reported fact, not opinions. Now you have to watch three networks' report on a certain subject just to get a feel for what is opinion and what is fact. When other countries do that, we call it propaganda. Here it is "quality" reporting. Offsubject gripe>
  12. I know the FSL makes pitcher look great because of the high humidity, but is there any thought that it effects Anundsen to a greater extent because he is a GB pitcher?
  13. I personally think that not dealing Hart had more to do with Corey's horrific slump to end last season that could've had a big impact on his trade value. If I had to guess, I'd say Melvin didn't want to sell low on Hart. And the fact that we didn't have a replacement for Hart. Trading Hart just makes another hole to fill. JJ at least had Escobar behind him at AA that was at least defensively ready (although a full year at AAA will be good for him). I don't think Katin counts as a possible RF starter (at least not yet).
  14. Taking a slightly different angle to answer the original question: "What is wrong with broadcaster/journalists of sports?" I'm really tired of print reporters using blogs instead of writing articles. It seems that (esp JSOnline) rather than write a well thought out article, they throw out a quick blog blurb and let it go at that. Whats the difference you ask? Typically articles are well thought out, researched, professional sounding documents. Blogs have an entirely different feel. Often they are quick blurbs with the intention of getting the information out fast. Often these are hastily written, less professional (JSOline intentionally writing about Frett Bavre?), and not well researched. They are more the off-the-top-of-the-head stuff. Blogs are fine to get out breaking news. But it seems that we have lost our quality reporting (some may argue we never had any) in favor for a "here is what I think" type article. Seems very unprofessional to me. FYI, the Packer coverage at JSOnline seems to be much worse about this than the Brewer coverage, but both have suffered because of it.
  15. I was encouraged this weekend, not so much by his hitting (where he had a couple nice games), but by his WALKING. Prior to Cleveland, Gamel had not taken one walk since May 29th (39ABs). I think that more than anything shows he was pressing and not being patient as we have come to expect by following him in the minors. Small sample, but a good sign.
  16. One interesting tidbit that goes with JJ's arguements: G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS As 3B 12 39 2 10 2 0 2 8 3 16 0 0 .256 .310 .462 .771 As DH 6 24 2 5 1 0 0 1 2 5 1 0 .208 .296 .250 .546 As PH 11 10 0 1 1 0 0 2 1 5 0 0 .100 .182 .200 .382 He does much better when starting at 3B at least in the small sample....
  17. I'm not advocating Hall. I'm just saying that he is an immovable object because of his salary vs. production. He isn't bad enough to DFA outright (defense and BA vs LHP still holding him there). Can't trade him, so he is what he is: Stuck as a starter vs. LHP and defensive replacement. Personally, I'm hoping for 3B to be covered by McGehee/Counsell/Heether for 90% (if Gamel is at AAA). I also don't buy the "role is not clearly defined" arguement. You might not agree with the role he is in, but I'm quite sure its been pretty clearly defined. Macha has used him quite consistantly (DH if we have it, ~60% of all other starts at 3B, PH in almost every game he doesn't start). I agree with you, however, that if he is at the MLB level, he should be starting nearly every game (especially after Weeks was injured).
  18. Unfortunately, I don't get to see many games, so I can't comment on if he is not lucky or whatever... Anyone know where to find LD%? And I realize we are talking about a very small sample size. But he also only has a very small sample size at AAA. Jumping from AA to MLB isn't always the best for a player. The difference between JJ vs. Gamel: We know JJ has and can hit MLB pitching. The difference between JJ, Hall vs. Gamel: JJ and Hall have no options to go anywhere else. Gamel represents our lone choice for position players to send somewhere without DFAing them. The main thing that disturbs me about Gamel right now is that he is trending in the wrong direction: G GS PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS TB GDP HBP SH SF IBB ROE BAbip tOPS+ sOPS+ 2009 Totals 29 18 80 73 4 16 4 0 2 11 1 0 6 26 .219 .288 .356 .644 26 1 1 0 0 2 1 .311 100 72 Last 7 days 6 4 20 18 2 3 0 0 0 1 1 0 2 6 .167 .250 .167 .417 3 0 0 0 0 1 0 .250 34 14 Last 14 days 12 9 40 38 3 8 2 0 1 5 1 0 2 16 .211 .250 .342 .592 13 1 0 0 0 1 0 .333 83 62 Last 28 days 24 17 72 67 3 14 3 0 1 6 1 0 4 24 .209 .264 .299 .562 20 1 1 0 0 1 1 .310 76 54 Last 365days 31 18 82 75 4 17 5 0 2 11 1 0 6 27 .227 .293 .373 .666 28 1 1 0 0 2 1 .326 106 77 Trust me when I say, I"m a huge fan of Gamel's. At one point, I thought he was going to be a better player than Braun. And I hope that after the Detroit series (or even the All-Star break) there are a lot of people telling me "I told you so". I'll happily take that. But sometimes a rookie just "working through it" isn't the best for the team, nor that player.
  19. "which does not sound like all that much fun to me. " Unless the Brewers win. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  20. 1) Unlike Parra, Gamel has not had any success at the ML level, so what makes you think he is as ready as he is going to get? If Parra had some success and still needs to go back, that is not evidence that Gamel is ready.2) Just because he went cold the first time, doesn't mean he will the second. That would be the point of learning from past mistakes. 3) If he stays cold, would you prefer he do it at the MLB level or AAA level? 4) I don't expect him to hit like Braun, but we need more than hitting like Hall also. 3 years ago, I think we all say let him learn at the MLB level. Now we have a real chance at the playoffs and have multiple struggling pieces in the lineup. He is one that CAN go back to AAA. There is little flexiblity in our roster without DFAing someone. (Wouldn't we all love it if Hall still had an option?) I seriously hope he turns it around in Detriot, but if not, I think we need another option for the moment.
  21. Absolutely. But will he be able to relax while struggling at the MLB level on a team that is in first place and fighting for the playoffs? IMO, he is better off for himself and the team to go back to AAA, get his confidence back and come back later in the season. Same idea as with Parra.
  22. I didn't mean to infer that we start Hall with Gamel in AAA. Hall can still handle LHP, while starting McGehee/Counsell/Heether most of the time. Then let Gamel get back on track at AAA and bring him back up. Kind of like Macha's policy of letting the players write the starting lineup. But extending it into AAA also. Heether is on fire right now. Only problem is that he isn't on the 40 man.
  23. I cheered when they called him up. I've wanted him to start most games at 3B. I root for him every at bat. But is it time to send him back to AAA? I'm thinking that he has a good taste of what MLB is about. If he takes that back to AAA and get back in the "swing" of things, we can call him back up later. But right now, he is as bad as Hall at the plate. Plus, I think Heether or Hurricane has earned their way up. I would prefer Heether, but he isn't on the 40-man.
  24. I remember reading Howell's draft bio and wondering how a LHP that is 6'7" and throws in the low 90s can last until the 15th round... I think he is going to be my "I-hope-they-pony-up-the-money" draft pick this year... Hansen at 6'8"? Wow. He can just hand the ball to the catcher. So do we think that we can sign everyone from rounds 1-14 then? I know Davis is a question, but they drafted him so early, I got to believe they make the effort to sign him. At what round do they stop giving the compensation pick next year if you don't sign the guy?
  25. Seems like most years we take a shot on someone with signability issues in the late teens or early twentys (RJ Seidel, Bryson, etc...). Anyone like that this year?
