  1. I'm in the same fold of saying Braun should remain a corner OF for now (some allowance for RF if we sign Dunn or simlilar OF). Although our best ever CF went from INF to LF to CF. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif But I'm really curious about the Braun over Hart in CF notion. I know that Hart doesn't have the best of arms for RF, but I've never really seen him worse than Braun. Actually I figured they were pretty equal. And with Hart being the faster runner (no that doesn't mean everything), he would generally be better in CF. But those are my subjective feelings. Other opinions I've seen for Braun over Hart in CF also seem subjective. Anyone have some numbers to prove one way or the other?
  2. If Fielder was traded, would Dunn be a viable replacement at 1B? I know he is pretty stone-footed in left and he is tall. But how is his glove? He would also replace the left handed bat we would loose in Fielder...
  3. If the Yanks came with a good deal for Cameron, I doubt Melvin would turn it down. I mean, he can't really be "upset" that NY offered $140 million, can he? He had to know that they only chance the Brewers had was for CC to take a major discount to stay with the Brewers. The closer situation was very interesting based on that article... I was hoping the Brewers could get Hoffman for $6-7 million for 2 years, but perhaps they could get someone better if no one is buying... Edit- clarified the "good deal"
  4. Well, we finally got a taste of the playoffs after 26 years... Good to see the fans anxious to taste some more. There's blood in the water people and the piranhas are feeding! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  5. To me it's puzzling that anyone is really that set against this notion, bc I don't think it's something I've genuis-ly concocted. Just seems like common-sense to me. I'm not set against the notion of it happening, just don't think its that easy to implement. My original posts were basically me being puzzled why some people were so set against JJ at 3B (so basically the opposite of the above quote). If it works out that way, great! I also agree that we are one year too soon on this arguement anyway. Escobar should be in AAA for a year (unless he is pounding the ball, then maybe mid-season).
  6. Thats good to hear. I'm still hoping Cain is our 2010 (or at least mid 2010) starting CF.
  7. Hopefully that means we were wrong about Cain needing to be added? If he is available for the Rule 5 draft, the Brewers must not be very high on him. Ouch.
  8. Yeah, how can you not have Escobar playing everday (somewhere)? Put him at AAA. Get someone at the MLB minimum to spot JJ once every two weeks. Anything serious happens, Escobar is a plane ride away.
  9. I agree that if we can get a 3B that is JJ's equivalent it would be great to get pitching for JJ. But how long has it been since we have had an above average 3B? Kevin Seitzer? I don't know that they are all that available. Or maybe its our bad luck there... I'm also not sure why playing him at 3B would prevent us from trading him as a SS. Its not like he can't play the position. Plus there's the whole 'J.J. has told Melvin he will not move to 3B' thing. Oh come on! Your believing what Melvin tells the media now? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif If Escobar turns out and If we get a good 3B, great. But I would still keep JJ at 3B an option.
  10. Ok, let me clarify. I understand the concept of positional value. I don't understand the obsession with it. Of course no one wants Kendall at 1B because there are many better options (both cheap and expensive, trade or FA or promotion from within). But the same can't be said for Hardy at 3B (there are some, but what would it take to get them? Probably more than Hardy). When/If Escobar is ready for the majors (assuming he is good enough to push Hardy out of the SS position) and Hardy is our best option at 3B, then he needs to play 3B. Who cares about his "value" there. If we can't get someone better (and I appreciate monkeyman's post on who would be better than Hardy), then he plays there. IMO, his increased "value" at SS over 3B is pretty small, especially considering his limited range at SS. He still would make an above average 3B. Kendall would rank last at every offensive category at 1B. Big difference. I have serious doubt we will find the a trade to send Hardy out for a better hitting 3B without giving up a lot more. This isn't fantasy baseball here... To say that JJ shouldn't play 3B only because he has more value at SS is a poor arguement. If it makes our team better, that is the goal.
  11. I'm completely lost in the whole "value" argument that seems so prevalent when talking about moving players around (Hall, Weeks, Hardy). Yes, I understand he will be less above the average 3B than he is above the average SS. But the goal is the field the best team possible. If we could swap JJ for a 3B with a better bat and equal D, then yeah lets do that. But chances are, it won't happen. Chance are, our best option is to move JJ to 3B or 2B (again, I agree Escobar is still one year away), then who cares about "value". Our best option is our best option. If we get a great trade for him, then fine. If not, he is an above average 3B (in defense, power, and OBP), but for 2010 instead. You can't always trade people so they are in their best position. Sometimes you make do with what you have. Edit: Removed quote from JJHardy7 - misread the quote.
  12. You are probably correct. I misread the announcement that the Padres recinded a contract offer as refused arbitration. I was bouncing between late Nov and early Dec to sign Hoffman, but am hoping the Brewers will be a little more agressive. Hopefully signing Hoffman on Dec 8th won't be the first aquisition. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif
  13. Ok, technically this happend when they claimed Casey McGehee, but that doesn't really count. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Make your predictions! Will it be a FA signing? A Trade? Dare to predict who will be the first player(s) in the first aquisition? My predition: FA signing Nov 21st: Trevor Hoffman...
  14. Patrick, I really appreciate these summaries you write up. I can hardly wrap my mind around all of these draftees, let alone follow how they are all doing! I'm wondering, as the winter baseball slow down happens, if you would be willing to go back and do the same for 2007's draft. It would be cool to follow-up on how they are doing in the first full year of baseball. I follow the higher level draft prospects, but reading this makes me realize how many of the lower draftees I miss until they are at AA or so... Of course, I know I'm asking for a lot with this, but maybe that will shakeup those mid-February doll-drums... Thanks.
  15. I'm banking that Dillard will either be in the pen on openning day or the first call-up from AAA. Anyone think he could be a closer down the road (not 2009, but sometime)? A 95MPH sinker is nice! Of course, he is behind Pena and Aguiar right now for minor league closers.
  16. So, how many deals will be made around the craps tables? "Come on! Daddy needs a new 3B!" http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif
  17. So, how many deals will be made around the craps tables? "Come on! Daddy needs a new 3B!" http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif
  18. So do we go back to the shotgun method of finding a closer? Sign a couple guys for the BP (like Juan Cruz or other could-close relievers), throw in Vill, McClung, and Torres and see who ends up on top?
  19. He did just switch from reliever to starter again, so the additional innings may have just wore him out at the end. Of course, if he needs a break, we could use him as a closer again. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif In short, I think we really need a upper-half of the rotation starter. Dempster is one possiblity. Personally I'd prefer Penny if he becomes available. Having Yo, Parra, , Bush, Suppan isn't great, but hopefully our offense can pick up the slack this year as opposed to the reverse from last year.
  20. Like you said, there is a lot of noise in those stats. Is there a stat for DPT %? Successful DPs divided by Total DP opportunities? Thats really what is being discussed here... Weeks has improved over the years, but still not enough to prevent me from flinching everytime the ball is hit to the right side... Can we get Fernando Vina to come back as a coach (or maybe player)? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  21. One other positive about signing Randy Johnson would be him (probably) passing the 300 win mark as a Brewer. Its always good to draw positive news coverage. We might even get a few extra nationally broadcasted games...
  22. But even with positive examples of pitchers that came back to succeed, there must be quite a number of pitchers (without looking) that don't... right? Thats why he probably won't get 4-5 year or $20 mil/yr offers. The higher probability is that he will get worse instead of better. I'm ok signing him to a 1-2 year deal, but not a 4-5 year.
  23. Well, better athletes. Less of an arm than 3B, less range than SS. But I thought Salome was pretty fast. Doesn't necessarily translate to range, but... Here is to hoping we don't have to find out! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  24. I'd take an average 3rd baseman. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Although, I would think 2B would be more likely. Why is it failed catchers get linked to 3B often? Just because of the normal strong arm/quick glove tranlates well?
  25. Obviously, most of the scouting work for the '09 draft is still to come with the spring baseball season, but how much is carry-over from summer of '08? Any ideas? Just wondering how much of that Jack will take with him that we will lose...
