I was thinking about the baseball vs. football thing last night and trying to figure out how baseball would sound if announcers broke down the plays like they do in football. One some of the better broadcasts, you will see a breakdown of pitches. But rarely do you see them talking about the route someone took to a fly ball. Or the footwork in turning a double play. Seems like the time between plays in football is very well used to explain what the offense/defense IS doing or what they SHOULD be doing. Couple other general thoughts: - Football is generally more popular. Simply because baseball is an expensive sport (you need a field big enough, ball, bat and every kid needs a glove). Football, you only need the ball. Even backyards are big enough to play some type of game. Kind of like watching kids play soccer in less fortunate countries. Sometimes, they don't even have a ball, just a rolled up wad of paper. - Whoever said football requires beer hasn't been to a baseball game lately! If it weren't for beer, the Cubs would only have 1/2 their attendance! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif - Definately agree with needing patience for baseball. Baseball is a more relaxing game. Best served in person. Football is a more hype game, so many times the TV broadcast is just as good or better than live (although if I ever sat at the 50 YL, I might change my mind...). Just to see better angles, instant replays, etc... Personally, I'm a fan of both. Not die-hard, but not casual either. I watched a little last night. About the same as the WS last year. If the Brewers or Packers aren't playing, I'm more of a casual fan.

Just change it to Home-Run derby /sudden death rules: 1) You provide your own pitcher. 2) Each player gets one swing 3) Each team alternates "at-bats" 4) Each player on the field at the end of the 12th must be used, but you decide the order (i.e. send Fielder up first, Craig Counsell up last) 5) First time a player from one team doesn't hit a homer, when the corresponding team does hit one, decides the game. I don't think its too far out of the question to have 5 better SPs than Suppan by 2010. I would hope that one of Welch, Periard, or Wright (my money is on Wright) will show enough in AAA to get a legit chance in 2010 ST. We will see how McClung handles starting. Plus, I'm guessing that one of the bigger players (Hart, Hardy, Fielder, Escobar...) gets traded next offseason. And FAs are always possible. I started this thread just to garner some discussion on what kind of RP Suppan would be, since so many people seem bent on trading him (which I don't see happening).

I actually like Suppan. I'm not trying to bash him or anything. If our economy hadn't taken a down turn, I think he contract would have been expensive, but not outrageously so for his production. And there was no way to predict that two years ago. As some have said, he is a 5th starter. He eats innings, and doesn't get hurt. We do need guys like that. But at the same time I'm hoping to improve (from internal and external sources). So I'm wondering if he is usable as an RP for 2010. If his salary "prevents" the team from putting him at RP, then you need to cut him (Again, assuming we have better SP options). You don't start him over some other SP just because of salary, because we are on the hook to pay him no matter what.

Funny thing is, no one is calling him a 5+ERA pitcher. I'm the only one that made that comment "If he is a 5+ ERA in 2010". I'm just speculating his skill deteriorating with age. And I'm just asking that IF he does fade as a starter, could he be a 4-4.5 ERA pitcher from the bullpen? Because I'm about 90% sure he will be a Brewer in 2010. And I'm hoping that by that year, we have better options for SP.

If he is a 5+ ERA in 2010 and we don't have better options, I don't like our chances. Perhaps I'm looking optomistically for next year, but I'm guessing we will have one guy out of the minors break the rotation next year. If we add one in a trade, Suppan becomes our 6th best starter (or possibly 7th). At that point, the most useful place would be the pen. My question is simply "Do you think he would be useful in the pen (read: average or above)?" (You can also say the winter doll-drums have got me down and I'm trying to stimulate some conversation other than the rut we are in)

I've seen enough debates about trading Suppan, but the only way that happens is if we get someone with an equally bad contract in return. So assuming no trade and he is not cut, where does he end up? I looks like a starter for this year (a #5 starter as our 4th best). Not too much debate (choice) there. But what about next year? Hopefully we will have increased pitching depth in 2010 (Capuano, perhaps one of Wright, Welch, or Periard will be ready, maybe a FA or trade). Would Suppan benefit with a move to the pen? I'm thinking of something like Dillard that got a velocity jump by only pitching an inning or two at a time. Yes, I would hate to have a $12million dollar reliever who might top out as average. But this is more about options than ideals.

As far as the "Trade Suppan" sentiment goes... it won't happen. We either eat 90% of the contract or trade for someone that has an equally bad contract. Unless he pitches lights-out this year, he is ours for two.

I doubt Cappy starts the year anywhere but extended ST. I don't think he will have recovered enough to pitch until May/June. How do people compare Nelson to Errecart? Seems like they are pretty similar guys (save for the R/L difference).

Yeah, you are probably correct. But if they only know one agent's name, its Boras. In fact, I would be hard-pressed to name another ML agent (hopefully Josh-agent39 will join those ranks soon)

One other point, however minor, was that he replaced a fan-favorite player. Not that people don't like Prince, but Overbay had a cult following and made a fun atmosphere everytime he came up to bat. I don't think too many people blame Prince for pushing out O, because of talent. But Prince doesn't have the cult following that O did.
