  1. Seems like the backup OF is now are weakest postion on the team. I posted in another thread that I expect (hope?) the Brewers will use their BP depth in a trade to bring in a backup OF sometime during ST. (Normally, there's that guy that pitches well, but isn't going to make the team...) I think the ideal person would be a Gabe-like OF (either Kapler or Gross), where they can handle center defensively if needed, but their bat is good enough to play in the corner OF also (for limited time). And of course, cheap is always a bonus. Not sure if we could take on another $2-3million player (unless we gave that up in a RP - Riske?) Anyone have any ideas who might be available to fit the bill? Or do you think our current BUOF (Gwynn, Nixon, Nelson, Duffy) is going to be it?
  2. I'm also thinking that if everyone looks good in ST, we will see a trade of RP for backup OF...
  3. This reminds me of the "we need a left handed bat" discussion. Now we have Gwynn, Nixon and Duffy. Oh joy! We need the best pitchers available, not just taking one because he is left handed. And Stetter was definately used in more situations than just for lefties. Shouse was a LOOGY, Stetter is just a LHP. Although if he is the only lefty in the pen, I'm sure he will be used that way. If Swindle beats out the competition, great. If not, then we only have one LHP in the pen. I'm ok with that because we should have a quality BP now. Also, I don't get the "we want a fire-baller to setup Hoffman" idea... Since both the setup and closer normally pitch one inning, they won't face the same batters. Following a soft tossing SP with a fireballing RP could throw off the batter's timing, but not one RP to another. If you want to do that, send in your fireballer 2-3 innings before your closer so they face the same batters.
  4. My hats off to Melvin. I thought for sure that this was the year to break his string of non-arby hearings.... Of course, I was sure it was going to be Fielder to do it, but Hart sounded pretty set on going also.
  5. 'Rillo, why are you so high on Morlan? Have you followed him before? Or just because he was a Rule 5 pick? I don't know much about him (save for the articles during the Rule 5 draft), so I'm surprised to see someone so high on him already. I wonder if Gagne has one of those "not called to the majors by X date, I'm released" clauses?
  6. I think most of us don't look too down on this season because we expected (for the most part) to lose CC and Sheets...
  7. This was basically my thought on the aquisition of a LHB. Now we have three poor hitting LHB, instead of finding a good hitting OF despite the "handness". Forget "balance", we need good hitters.
  8. I wasn't really thinking about Weeks or lead-off hitters in general. I was just trying to figure out a way to represent how many runs you produce (or contribute) to the team. This could be due to runs or RBI. And since both stats are dependant on the players around you (to some degree), I was trying to "normalize" the numbers to take out the team dependancy. But as I verabalize it, I realize there are stats for that already.
  9. I've hear it said here that comparing one players RBIs to anothers is useless because it has more to do with opportunity than ability. Has anyone done an analysis of RBIs as a function of a players BA and the OBP of the three people in front of him? Or you could do the opposite: Runs as a function of the BA of the three players behind you. Basically, that is the jist of the discussion here, right? You put high OBP players at 1 and 2 to give more opportunity to your best hitters (generally at 3&4). Runs are the name of the game. OBP is the means to an end.
  10. The more I think about it, the more I agree with JB. We lose CC to the Yanks in a very high profile FA signing (not even to mention draft pick thing...), then recently lose Sheets to an injury (which we have to pay for) and don't get draft pick compensation for. Lose Torres and Shouse out of the BP. Lose Kapler and Durham off the bench. Hoffman helped, but doesn't offset those losses. Signing Looper would have been too late for the segment (and low profile anyway). Counsell and Nixon probably don't even register on ESPN radar. So I can see the point of an outsider thinking we had one of the worst offseasons. And I would imagine most of us see the offseason as a step back also. It certainly wasn't a good offseason...
  11. Yeah, isn't that a step up? We are concidered a MLB team instead of ignored like a MiLB team.... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  12. Lets cut Rottino! Rotten traitor playing for the Italian WBC team... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  13. Signing Looper fills our biggest hole. Now we need a real backup OF, not just a LHB that plays OF... I would be shocked if McClung didn't make the team, but I was hoping to see what he could do as a SP... Probably will get the chance yet. Small sample size, but I seem to remember talk about DiFelice being a ROOGY. That was why they picked their spots carefully when they used him and didn't leave him out there too long. BA OBP SLG OPS vs RHB as RH .170 .220 .213 .433 vs LHB as RH .333 .357 .778 1.135
  14. Biggest problem is that trading Hart leaves a hole in the OF - Signing Dunn won't happen because of $$, (otherwise - just go after one of FA SPs and forget trading Hart) - I don't really want to touch Griffey. We just don't have any backup OFs to replace him when he gets hurt. I would also wager a bet Hart has a better season than Griffey. - Gillespie just isn't ready yet. Maybe in an emergency... - Trading Hart NOW would at best get us a 4-5 level SP. Simply too late in the season. Personally, I'm in the camp that thinks Hart will bounce back after an off year.
  15. Would you feel the same if the Milwaukee Braves moved to Atlanta and became the Atlanta Widgets, while the Seattle Pilots became the Milwaukee Braves again? (i.e. the Cleveland Browns/Balitmore Ravens situation)
  16. If you think Dunn will sign for 4 years 25 million I want you to be his agent so we can sign him. Of course, Manny didn't sign for 1 year, 25 million, so the one year offer may have to be $30M.
  17. How does Dykstra get such a high ranking? We have him at #20 in the our list, but I've seen him a couple times in the top 10 in other lists... Personally I can't believe he is above Green, Lucroy, and Gillespe! Anyone else see that is an outlier?
  18. Found it finally: http://web.minorleaguebas...d=t531&t=p_pbp&pid=451657 Interesting tidbit from there: recorded a no-decision in his second start on 4/22 at Boston (3.0IP, 5H, 4ER, 3BB, 3K, 4HR)...in the third inning, surrendered four consecutive home runs to Manny Ramirez, J.D. Drew, Mike Lowell and Jason Varitek (who had a combined 4HR for the season entering the game) in a span of 10 pitches...became only the second pitcher in Major League history to allow four consecutive homers in an inning. That was after he was called up from AA... Yeah, I hope he gets a shot at the 5th starter spot .
  19. http://sports.yahoo.com/m...amp;prov=st&type=lgns Hasn't pitched in 3 years. But since its a MiLB contract, no harm in seeing if he recovered...
  20. Hmmmm... I can't find him at milb.com, yet he pitched in the minors for all of 2008... strange. So now we have two left-handed SPs named Wright. Which one makes a Brewer MLB impact first?
  21. Seems like a good deal. We sure needed SP depth (and still do)!
  22. I must not understand the "option" thing totally. I thought they had three years to option a player to the minors whether they were sent or not. Don't options expire at some point?
  23. Watch Peyton Manning at the line of scrimmage making calls and adjustments on the fly. Mike Holmgren was a genious for making half time adjustments to the game plan. They make a HUGE stagedy impact on the game. Baseball has stragedy, but Yost had a lesser impact on the game than Mike McCarthy. Pitchers/catchers probably have a similar head game going as a QB with the defense, but its still a one-on-one battle instead of 11 pieces to move and coordinate. Maybe each pitcher needs a play clock and a limited number of timeouts. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  24. Blast! How does this compare to Nelson breaking his hamate bone? Hopefully he has a better recovery... Green's agent is our very own (secret) agent39, right? Josh, do you have more (positive) info for us?
  25. That list can't be completely accurate can it? How does Bill Hall have an option left while TGJ has none?
