  1. Two people who have pretty high places in the organization, who are business contacts and friends. The atmosphere is not what it once was. Of course, winning can mask certain workplace stresses. But from what I have heard from these people it is not a very fun place to work any longer.
  2. I dont think Jack Z is the answer as GM. I'm not a big fan of Melvin, but Jack Z is part of the reason the team has such a one dimensional offense. Id love to see an Ivy League MBA type like Theo Epstein or someone come in to start using a MoneyBall, patient, defense, pitching, value approach to building a team. Someone who will surround themself with good baseball people and scouts, who can realize the whole picture. Not one who just wants to hit home runs and take mammoth risks with high draft picks.
  3. I think in the end, that despite what Sabathia or Attanasio might say, there just isnt any way that the Brewers can afford CC Sabathia. Once the final bill arrives and Marky Mark sees that he has lost money, he is going to step back on big talk about signing Sabathia long term. Add to that that Milwaukee's financial situation as a small market team make the risk too big to take him on. The last thing in the world this team could handle would be to over pay what they could, and then have Barry Zito part II on their hands. It could destroy the franchise financially for years. Another thought is that if they had intended on resigning him, then why abuse him the way they did for 3 months? If this is the case, it gives great credence to the thought that the management of this team has no clue what they are doing, just flying by the seat of their pants (see also Ned Yost's firing). The public doesnt get to see this in Attanasio, but I have heard that working inside of the Milwaukee Brewers is not a fun job to have anymore. Its all about raising money, making money, running a business, not really about baseball much anymore. He may want his consumer to think they want to and can sign Sabathia, like any ambitious CEO might about his product, but in the end, he will realize it is too risky and too expensive to take that gamble on. Its a marketing ploy at best. Add to this that Sabathia has expressed an interest numerous times of playing closer to home. Dodgers or Angels will be the winners I bet.
  4. Late comer here to the discussion, but I dont feel that Sveum really had much to do at all with the Brewers making the playoffs. If it werent for the Pirates playing like the season was already over, and the Cubs starting a AAA lineup, the Brewers would have went right on playing the way that they had with Ned in charge. In fact, they did...anemic offense, lack of executions, etc. As for Suppan starting game 4, it was the right choice, injured or ineffective or not. Gallardo on short rest was a recipe for disaster. You dont bring a 22 year old kid, who has only pitched once since coming back from surgery less than 6 months prior, to pitch in that situation. Bad move when looking at the long term outlook of the team. He had a hard enough time throwing strikes in game 1. What makes you think it would have been better? His performance later in game 4 is completely out of context...Phillies had the game in hand already...they were approaching the rest of the game cautiously...same goes for Parra.
  5. You wont be irate for long. Once Rick Porcello arrrives to the big club.
  6. Here's my NL Ballots: MVP 1. Pujols, should win it 2. Berkman 3. Wright, could win it 4. Hanley Ramirez 5. Ryan Ludwick 6. Ryan Howard, probably will win it 7. Beltran 8. Utley 9. Delgado 10. Reyes Brauns awful september drops him off the ballot. Cy Young: 1. Lincecum 2. Santana 3. Webb 4. Haren 5. Dempster ROY 1. Soto 2. Votto 3. Fukudome AL MVP - Dustin Pedroia CY - Cliff Lee ROY - Jacoby Ellsbury I wouldnt give either of the big NL awards to Sabathia, MVP because I feel a pitcher does not deserve it, and Cy Young because he really only pitched half the year, just a victim of circumstance.
  7. You mean there is still such a thing as a solid job at Briggs and Stratton?
  8. White Sox over Twins Rays over White Sox in 4 Red Sox over Angels in 4 Phillies over Brewers in 4 Cubs over Dodgers in 5 Rays over Red Sox in 6 Phillies over Cubs in 7 Phillies over Rays in 7
  9. The Phillies arent going to roll over like the Pirates and Cubs did. I agree about the offense. They still arent hitting well at all, even in the last week against the Pirates and a lot of relief pitchers, the team was only able to score a run here or there. As for Moyer not having any "stuff"...there is a reason he is still pitching at age 45. He knows how to pitch. He changes speeds, he locates his pitches, and when you are throwing change ups all day long at 78 mph, an 85 mph fastball looks just as fast as 98. Hes a good pitcher. The whole league has done poorly against him this year.
  10. Unfortunately, I dont think there is much anything anyone can do to keep Sabathia in Milwaukee. With what he will garner as a FA this year, coupled with the economic realities of being a small market team, its just wishful thinking that he would sign a long term deal with the Brewers. I heard an interview that he gave yesterday after the win was very cordial and appreciative for the city and fans of Milwaukee, but I dont think you can make the leap that he would like it so much to re-sign here. It would be a difference of about $50 million dollars between staying here and getting what the market can pay him.
  11. I've seen a wide range of attitudes this morning at my work place regarding the Brewers making the playoffs as the Wild Card. The bandwagon fans are pretty cocky and running around saying things like "We're Number 1" and "The Brewers all the way!". Hopeful exuberance but also pretty cocky. Another group is very thankful for the long wait being over. One of my co-workers has had season tickets for 21 years and is just plain happy they are in. He's not knowledgeable about the game very much, but he loves the Brewers. And a third group is looking at it in a glass half full sort of way. (Myself included). The rationale is that if Russell doesnt throw Chavez out there twice to blow games and that if Pinella plays to win, then the Brewers dont make it. Where are you?
  12. The Brewers are in a very tight spot here with the rotation. I doubt Sheets pitches ever again for the Brewers, and if he does, how good will he be? Sabathia wont go twice on 3 days I don't think, unless they want to undergo a potential lawsuit down the road from his agent for potential earnings lost. Bush and Sabathia are the only decent options right now for this staff, and if they dont pitch complete games, watch out! McClung is awful, Suppan has been pitching batting practice, and if Gallardo makes a start, you might as well write off next year. Bush vs Pirates Tuesday Suppan vs Pirates Wednesday Sabathia vs Pirates Thursday McClung vs Cubs Friday DeFelice/Dillard vs Cubs Saturday Bush vs Cubs Sunday I this were the middle of Julythe Brewers might have a chance of going 4-2 or 5-1 in this stretch, but right now, winning more than 3 is going to be very difficult. And the Cubs will be bringing their A game this weekend, even if we had a healthy Sheets, an untired Parra and Sabathia, it still would be tough to take 2 of 3.
  13. I was speaking more along the lines of organizationally, not player wise. Yost, Melvin, all the front office people, Schlesinger, ....front office cleaning....
  14. Attanasio should have compeltely cleaned house when he bought the team. If he replaces Yost from within, and moves Jack Z into Melvin's spot. Its going to be more of the same. I feel that the issues affecting this team right now are organizational, right on down to the players they draft and select. Its all about the HR, no interest in patient hitting, defense or pitching. This issue is as much the players fault as it is Melvin and Jack Z. Yost is probably the one least to blame for the way this team is playing right now.
  15. I did some analysis on this subject in mid August and figured that by his last start, through the end of the year, he would be pretty ineffective. The way that I came to that conclusion was based on his inning totals. His previous career high for IP was in 2004 when he threw 139 innings. I thought that 10% over that number would still leave us with an effective Manny Parra, and anything above that would leave him pretty shaky. His last start was that "over 10%" number for him in innings. I would guess that from here on out he may get to the 5th and then just be too tired to be anywhere near what he was the first part of the year. We shouldnt forget that the year after Parra's previous high for IP, he had shoulder problems and needed surgery and wound up losing almost 2 years of his career. Problem with shutting Parra down now is that McClung wouldnt be any better of an option. There was a reason he was removed from the rotation in the first place. Looks like a Sabathia and Sheets pray for rain type of scenario for the Brewers in the last 17 games.
  16. Does anyone else think (or wish) that Brian Anderson gets replaced next year on the Brewer television broadcasts? Last year I felt he did a very good job. But this year, he has gotten a lot like Daron Sutton (homer) and I feel has slipped in his play by play work on the tv broadcasts. Does anyone else think this? The reason I bring this up is because I am a firm believer in the old baseball standard "no cheering in the press box", and Anderson has definitely forgotten that mantra this year, in my opinion. He tends to get VERY excited over deep fly balls, good defensive plays, etc...things that a good play by play man shouldnt do.
  17. oops, meant Weeks. So was the number that Howard got $10mm his first shot at arbitration? I thought it was the $900k number.
  18. In regards to Hardy, Hall, Hart and Fielder what do people expect they might get in arbitration? I know that Ryan Howard is the model for Fielder. And Howard got a $900,000 reward in year one and $10,000, 000 in year two. (someone please correct me if those numbers or years are incorrect). But what should the other guys get?
  19. I am going to stick to my guns on this one, a month later, and say that Braun is having a top 10 MVP type of year, but he is not worthy of the award. My list is: Berkman Pujols Lee Ramirez Ludwick Wright Howard Utley Burrell Braun Even if you take the players from teams that may well end up as "also rans" (Berkman, Lee (although he has no chance because of the broken finger) and Ramirez), Braun is barely a top 5 player at this point. If you only look at "counting numbers" he falls short, as he would with sabermetric (OPS, Runs Created, Win Shares). The kid is having a great year, but he's not the MVP.
  20. Fielder and Braun, I really dislike the way that they admire their Home Runs Carlos Delgado Ryan Zimmerman Albert Pujols Ken Griffey Jr. Stephen Drew Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter
  21. If you look at Sabathia for this year, should you also look at Harden? He is 3-1 and the Cubs are 5-2 in his starts, he actually has left with the lead in all 7 of his starts. He's probably got 6 starts left. He has an impressive line...44 IP 26 hits, 14 BB, 59 K's, 7 ER .173 BAA, 1.43 ERA and 0.91 WHIP. I realize, of course, that he has no shot, but he has put up just as good of numbers as Sabathia has (minus the innings). So if you consider Sabathia worthy of consideration, Harden should get it too.
  22. It would seem that Ben Sheets should have no problem getting to that 13 win mark this year. Does anyone think he is going to do that this year? On the face of it, its an easy assumption to make. He has at least 7 starts left this year to win 2 games. But it took him 6 starts between win 10 and win 11. And he has a pretty tough task ahead of him. He probably has the toughest remaining slate of the Brewer starters. He has to face the Cards on the road, the Mets at home, the Phillies on the road, the Cubs twice (one home and one road), and his two "easier" starts left are against the Padres and the Pirates (both at home). Is there a psychological thing going on here? I doubt he even keeps track of his stats, but I find it very interesting that a pitcher of his skill has never won more than 12 games in a season, and here he is on the brink of that mark again, and has only managed to win one of his last 9 starts.
  23. Maybe I should change that "would" to "should". Its happened once in the history of the award, I'd call that a rarity. Also, Sutcliffe was traded to the Cubs on June 13 of 1984, Sabathia July 8 of 2008. That's an entire month's difference. Can you really give the Cy Young to a guy who has spent less than 50% of the season in the league?
  24. If I were a BBWAA writer, my vote for Cy Young would go to Lincecum first, Webb, Haren, Hamels then Santana to round out my top 5 (is it 5 or 3 votes? I forget). Lincecum is the most dominant pitcher in the league this year and is having a better season that Webb. He is leading the league in Strikeouts, ERA, Strikeouts per 9 innings, he has the best WPA among NL Pitchers, Pitcher Runs Created (runs prevented), Fielding Independent Pitching, Win Shares, and has the highest VORP right now among NL Pitchers. Webb is leading the league in wins and thats it. He is at best the 2nd best pitcher in the NL this year. Cy Young Award is supposed to go to the best pitcher in the leauge, right?
  25. I have felt that ever since that early season series at Houston, when Sheets had his family at the games, that Houston would be a good fit for him. The Rangers would be a good fit for him as well. Both teams can afford and probably would be willing to spend the money on Sheets. I would be afraid as a pitcher throwing in that park though. Is there any truth to the rumors that Ben is kind of a womanizer though? Might not be a good idea for him to return close to home if that is the case.
