  1. This team was going to be competitive with or without Grandal. They were within one game of the WS with Erik Kratz getting the majority of the starts! I don't think you sign a top catcher to an $18+ million 1-year deal without shooting for the moon. That's why I don't think they are done making big moves too. I don't think it has to be an "all-in" year by just grabbing Grandal. It just helps put you in a position to compete for the Central again this year and see how the season plays out. Maybe those big moves come in July when this team proves it is a winner again. Technically it is never an "all-in" year and obviously we have enough young guys that we aren't at an all-in point realistically either. But signing a guy to a one year contract for big bucks with no QO and Cain/Braun getting one year older and Chacin a free agent does push the needle closer that way.
  2. No way. If you take out the one bad outing Perez had, he has not given up a run as a pitcher in his career. As an emergency catcher, I think Counsell was in error in not playing there.
  3. I have the Brewers payroll around $104M if you assume they trade Anderson and Thames and you don't count any incentives, buyouts and deferred payments from prior years (Garza). So that seems to me there is room for more pitcher or 2B salary. I would say they potentially wait and see more specifically where to spend the rest of their money at the trading deadline, but with Grandal on a one year deal, I assume there is going to be more move(s) coming before the season starts.
  4. I figured he was talking into his phone. You never know what they are going to put down for you.
  5. Well he signed the extension in the spring of 2012, so the Brewers had just appeared in the NLCS. However, it was just 2 years removed from Fielder's "bowling ball" celebration that irked the Giants. I'm mostly kidding about that stuff, but the way he still held a grudge against Braun in 2018 leaves me wondering how he feels about Milwaukee. Do we know which teams are on his list? Can he update it annually? I assume/think that most no-trade lists are updated annually. IIRC one agent got canned because he forget to submit the no-trade list by whatever deadline.
  6. I've seen some no-trade lists include the big teams. I don't know if the player didn't really want to go there, or just figured he would have that much more leverage when he was asked to allow a trade there. So he could ask for his option year to be guaranteed or an option to not be exercised, etc.
  7. Madison is actually in the final year of an extension he signed, which contains limited no trade protection. According to Cots he can block trade to eight clubs. That is important to note. Because if the Brewers are out of it by the end of the July (you never know), they would want the option of trading MadBum then. This would limit that value.
  8. I'm not going to read through the whole thread, but I didn't see anybody in the last two pages say Erceg being blocked would effect trade value. It isn't just one year of MadBum, if you assume there is an 75% chance we get a QO draft pick for him. One year is not a bad thing. One year bridge to get us through one more year of seasoning on Burnes/Woodruff/Peralta and see where Nelson/Davies are at. If you sign Miley for his age 32-34 seasons and Derek Johnson takes along his magic juju and he turns into Baltimore Miley, that is a lot more painful than MadBum being average for a year.
  9. Yeah, I don't consider Erceg position blocked as he is at minimum a year away (assuming the best) and the Shaw situation also seems fluid. By 2020 Shaw could be at 2B or part of trade out while the team still has cheap, controlled years remaining. Erceg didn't hit enough in 2017 and 2018 to assume any sort of fast track. I assume he would start in AAA, but it wouldn't be a shocker if he started in AA and moved mid-season. So, I would be willing to part with him if it was needed to push a trade through that we wanted. Especially if it meant getting Smith for the bullpen.
  10. Regardless of how seriously determined and focused the aquatic mammals, I think the Brewers did well in this trade.
  11. Well one could look at it as getting younger and cheaper (Crawford) at SS. I don't know much about the Segura trade otherwise. But I assume they are judging that trade for 2020 and after results. I assume the Mariners are a team that isn't too constrained by budget. So they can spend cash (no prospects) on this kid, baby him in 2019 when they aren't going to the postseason anyways, and Kikichu will be full go for 2020 and after when they probably try and win again. Also kind of look like they are trying while they are at it.
  12. Might not be a bad idea to add an option to that - just in case someone gets hurt. Or, you know, the "Chosen One" turns out to be a false prophet. If you add an option, you are also adding a buyout. I would rather go straight one year for a player like Dozier (age plus down year). If Hiura and/or Dubon are still not ready for 2020, then you can dip back into the free agent waters. Or We still end up signing Moose if his price comes down and we move Shaw to 2B. Or I think if given a chance that the Perez/Spangenberg platoon would be at least league average for the position, at a way below league average price tag. Spangrez or Perenberg?
  13. Assuming the above and that he plays catcher means he is slow and he doesn't strikeout - sounds like a future lead the league in GIDP guy.
  14. You're forgetting the posting fee.
  15. I wouldn't trade 2/3 of Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta - and the Indians may have enough pitching at the majors that they wouldn't mind a mix with younger guys anyways. I'd also try and hold on to Dubon, unless the Indians really value him and it made the deal a go. I would go - Ray, Peralta/Woodruff, Z.Brown, Lemons. Three pitchers, four total prospects for Klubers age 33-35 years where he is paid $17M, $17.5M, $18M. I am not going to assume a QO at the end. If he was a free agent, he would probably be get a 3 year contract at $26M per year, right? So he is underpaid $8.5M a year? This has to be in the ballpark. We can expand the trade to include more prospects if they value Thames at all as a salary dump from our end.
  16. Then you configure with the parts you have: Perez, Spangenberg, Dubon, Saladino etc, etc. If they don't work out, then you trade for a Hairston, Walker at the deadline. We can always trade Zach Brown and others to get back Sogard.
  17. No, I hope not.
  18. Or a team who is a legitimate World Series contender. A's and Giants don't fit that description, but I know another team who was one game away from the World Series and plays in a mostly weatherproof stadium... I don't think the Brewers are a more obvious playoff contender than the A's. Sadly the media is going to be slotting us in as fourth in the NL Central again going into 2019. 4th? Hyperbole, or did the Pirates do something big that I missed? I can see the Cubs and Cardinals (spending moola on FAs) picked over us.
  19. ?? His money is already guaranteed. So he will pick a team that lets him play SS or is his geographical preference where he wants to live/play. Money will no longer play a role in where he goes, he already has Toronto's money, and he won't get any more. In essence he is playing for free if he decides to play. Free to the team who signs him, not free for him since he has 40 million coming his way whether he plays or not... Huh? The signing team will end up paying him veterans min.wage - so they have a cost, albeit small. But Tulo is playing for free. He is going to make the same amount of money whether he plays baseball next year or not. Edit: I would be curious how income taxes could play a role. If he doesn't play at all, he would be 100% Canadian taxes, to start I assume. I could see if those are really high, and he went to a state that had no state income tax and played half his games there, he might save a substantial (at least substantial to me) amount of money. Don't know how Canadian taxes work for nonresidents.

  21. That was more than I was expecting him to get. Makes me think Lowrie will be out of our range on price and length.
  22. I think if they let a mountain lion loose on the field, that would draw fans to the stadium and television. Gladiator style (comes up from the underground), randomly sometime during the game (keeps audience paying attention - don't know when will happen) when the road team is playing defense, they bring it up and let it loose. Make sure it has ability to leave cage on all side so it is random where it runs. See how fast all the players really are. Betcha Machado will hustle now.
  23. I assumed the one questioner was asking about the Zach Brown (Band) and not Daniel Brown (Davinci Code).
  24. Last year guys like Broxton and Santana could be sent down without losing them. You only get 25 spots and if none of the position players have options and you don't want to risk losing them...... That obviously is the main reason to look to trade away Thames.
  25. Yeah, but that sure seems like more than he should have got. Even the Angels probably don't want to throw away $2-3M when they don't have to. And this seems like that. I hope we have Chase Anderson on the trading block if Harvey can get this.
