  1. Usually, but I bet the Giants FO think they really have to show something for this trade to the "regular" fan. I wouldn't be surprised if the Giants pay most of the MadBum contract or package him with some other prospect(s) to get that much better a prospect(s) back. This trade will be under the microscope, so they will probably want somebody close to major league ready.
  2. Definitely agree that Pina is a better defensive catcher. Better on wild pitches and framing imo. I also don't like the fact that Grandal argues ball/strikes when he is hitting, as a catcher you need to take one for the team, and tell the ump you want the same call for the pitcher during the switchover in the innings. But Grandal does add a bat (switch hitter +) you have to account for, and right now that trumps the defensive difference.
  3. In my opinion the Nationals and the Marlins are going to suck and the Mets will struggle to get near .500 - so you can't count out the Phillies or the Braves both making it in. They can feast on that soft underbelly, while other teams grind down.
  4. Ray or Dubon Ray isn't on the 40 man, so it would have to be something where an OF is out for a long amount of time. I will go with Supak even though he is only in AA. They churn the pitchers enough, he could be up.
  5. Only watching on gamecast. They pinch hit for Guerra, right? So it isn't the best, but there are two lefties up after Suarez - so understandable. Not sure what you want Counsell to do on that one.
  6. I don't think moving Moose to 2nd this year as opposed to moving Shaw to 2nd last summer had anything to do with trying to keep Shaw happy. It more has to do with Shaw being part of the long-term future, and there being next to no depth at 3B beyond him. As we know, Moose is on a 1-year deal, and there is a strong 2B contingency plan in place. So you are saying Shaw would forget how to play 3B for 2020 if he played 2B this year? I'm still going with they were keeping Shaw happy, and they told Moose the situation before he signed, so he knew ahead of time the deal.
  7. I don't think moving Moose to 2nd this year as opposed to moving Shaw to 2nd last summer had anything to do with trying to keep Shaw happy. Then why? That's the only reason I can think of.
  8. Sitting at work. Saw the highlight of Moose throwing someone out in the 2nd. Running in and barehand pickup. No way Shaw gets an out there. Am I the only one that thinks Moose is better at defensively at 3B than Shaw? I understand keeping Shaw happy as he will be here next year and Moose won't. But now.........
  9. Now that he is versatile, the Brewers will trade for him.
  10. They may want to dump salary, but they won't need to. At first thought, I would think Dubon would be an overpay. But, if the FO doesn't think he beats out Arcia at some point, then his value is as the min. wage utility guy. Which is valuable, but not as much as Will Smith in the pen for the Brewers in 2019.
  11. "Milwaukee Brewers: Mauricio Dubon (2047). In one of the great heists in trade history, Dubon came over from the Red Sox as part of the Tyler Thornburg trade in 2016 and ends up winning four batting titles, stealing more than 300 bases and playing good shortstop for more than a decade with the Brewers." Maybe Dubon saves the presidents life in 2046 or cures cancer or some such after his baseball career.
  12. Did it seem like Hiura was hitting with the bases loaded every time he was coming up? I think it is safe to say he will probably only get better from where he is at. .250/.333/.708 Maybe the obp will go down if he doesn't get hit by a pitch every three games.
  13. One of the sites had his option as $1M or something, but that was wrong it was $3.5M. And without a minor league shuttle option.....
  14. Hidden in that article was how good former-Brewer Jordan Lyles has started out the season for the Pirates. Granted, it's only 38 innings, but he did throw hard and Pittsburgh got him for pretty much nothing. I guess at the $3.5M option, the Brewers had to pay for him, I wouldn't have done it last fall. But, for the $2M the Pirates paid, I would have done that. Nice insurance.
  15. It's a half year rental, so age is completely insignificant. And also just because a team's fanbase floats an idea, it doesn't mean that the idea makes any sense. Would the Giants want Carlos Martinez, who is making nearly $12 million this year, if they are in a rebuild? There is no way the Brewers should even entertain trading a prospect the level of Lutz for a rental reliever. Nor do I think he'd cost close to that much to acquire. You are significantly overvaluing the rental market, or undervaluing our prospects. I assume the tommy john wouldn't matter anymore, right? He has been about as consistently good as a reliever can be. And you can't say it is park effect, in 2018 Smith pitched better away from home. If the Giants put Smith on the market in June to gather potentially more teams to go after him, and get the premium for trading him early - there will be a pretty decent haul going back.
  16. https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-players-on-the-best-uniforms Team receiving one technically illegal vote from a player who picked his own team but whose response was too good not to print: Brewers: “I think hands down [the best uniform] is our ‘Retro Fridays’ ones, with the ball and glove and the pinstripes. I know I'm not supposed to say our own, but I don't care. I love them. If we could wear that every day, I would love it. At first, I always just thought it was a baseball mitt. When I was in high school and I got my first job, I would go to Lidz and buy a bunch of baseball hats. I was wearing the Brewers one out one day and someone told me it was an M and B.” -- Josh Hader
  17. He has looked not good for a few games on defense. He needs to be benched for Perez for a couple of games. That will probably get him focused again.
  18. Agree, I’m sure Stearns does too, the way Shaw has slumped all year, Thames isn’t going anywhere, unless Stearns trades for a first baseman at the deadline. Yeah, I wasn't saying I want to trade Thames, but if we do, I don't think we get anything for him unlike what some people are saying. As long as he is taking walks like crazy, leads team (even better than Yelich), he is fine with me.
  19. That, plus another stretch up with the big league team to keep him hungry can't be bad. Mini-vacation for his knees.
  20. Thames My best estimate would be someone would take him off our hands for straight salary dump. No prospects, not even a bag of used balls. If we paid salary and sent him out then we can get whatever level of prospect you are essentially paying for. You have to wonder if he will fade and his defense is going to subtract from his bat.
  21. Chacin's last three starts have been pretty good. I'm not changing anything with him yet, he may have found his groove.
  22. The Brewers just called up 1992 Cal Eldred.... oops I mean Keston Hiura.
  23. Figure on paying Braun $2M a year for 9 years after he is gone. You have to replace Chacin and Grandal. Raises for everyone not named Cain or Braun. But probable savings on Chase Anderson and Thames ($1M buyout). But all of sudden we are just Shaw and Yelich with lefty stick in the lineup. Cain, Braun, Hiura, Aguilar, Arcia To me there is no way we sign Kimbrel. If we don't do it when we have the draft choice advantage (4th vs 1st rounder), I don't see doing it when the rest of the league has equal shot.
