  1. With a $2M buyout, I wouldn't be sure on Broxton being gone. If he puts up a year like he did last year, for a net cost of $7M I would assume I would keep him another year. And Broxton can't decline and assume he will get paid more if KRod and Soriano don't end up with much this offseason.
  2. The first thing that comes to mind to me is that the Brewers really don't think Broxton is that good after looking at him last year. Personally, if I am the Brewers and I think Broxton will be an average closer, I am not even asking about Papelbon, as we have enough other pieces to put together a decent pen to start the season.
  3. I'm assuming that Centeno must be someone they can trust short-term even if Lucroy isn't ready opening day, otherwise why spend a 40 man spot on him?
  4. Or no back of the bullpen addition, but add a Gorzelanny - someone that can be a starter but will start in the pen. That addition and Broxton, Jeffress, Smith, Kintzler and two of: Wooten, Blazek, Knebel, Thornburg, Henderson. With players like Strong/Goforth available to help later in the year.
  5. $8 would seem to be a price where the Brewers would have to give up a legitimate prospect, but only if the Phillies are also paying some of the option. Tricky negotiations. I sure would hate to have to pay him $13M in 2016, if he starts to lose it in 2015. But the Brewers should probably see savings from the ARam, Lohse contracts in 2016 to pay for it. I assume the Brewers would have to cut one of the utility infielders to make room on the 40 man roster or the 3rd catcher or Brooks Hall or something, right?
  6. Well if Drew played SS, then Segura would be available to platoon with Gennett.
  7. It seems to me that we can win quite a few games this year if we have some zombies chasing the other team around the diamond.
  8. Really? That's not how I remember it at all. Someone more in tune with the minor league forum can probably tell the true story, though. My memory was that Green was the more highly thought of at the time.
  9. Well I infer from their posts that JBriggs and Souptown have an issue with the signing.
  10. Is he trouble in the clubhouse that some team didn't want to spend a million and roll the dice?
  11. I'm thinking some team will cut a deal with the Dodgers before he is just free to sign with anyone. Why not throw a token minor leaguer at the Dodgers and have them throw in $8M-$8.5M of his salary. You get spin the Wilson roulette wheel at a gamble at $2M and the Dodgers get to save money over and above just cutting him loose.
  12. I'd rather have Parra at 1 yr $6M (if that ends up being the amount) than Aoki at 2 yrs for $10M. I do think Parra is quite a bit better fielder than Aoki. I would actually want this backup to be able to hit righties better, where you can platoon with Davis if he doesn't come around. Parra hits the righties better than Aoki. And if not a platoon, he will still get more at bats spelling Davis, Braun, and Gomez when there is a righty on the mound.
  13. Powerhouse, elite and miracle, eh - seems like a little hyperbole. Obviously the Brewers would need better pitching and hitting from last year. If Lohse, Gallardo can pitch the same as last year and we get improvement from Garza and Peralta and one of Fiers/Nelson is a legitimate #4 type starter, that is a good enough rotation to get into the playoffs. No ace, but depth of above average pitching. I'm not confident that the relief pitching will be league average as it stands now, but DM will probably acquire someone and it is also the easiest position to improve at the trading deadline. The offense does need the good Braun as I don't expect to count on the same results from Gomez and Lucroy next season. But if we get the good Braun and a decent season from ARam, better Davis combined with Lind we would produce enough offense to also get into the playoffs. A bunch of ifs, but I don't think I would consider it a miracle for the above to happen. Just need to stay healthy where there is no decent backup plan, but that is the case for a lot of teams. Off the top of my head, I think there is a 25% of winning ~90 games, 40% of winning ~81 games, 35% of winning ~72 games.
  14. The problem will be that he will make the team, because he is a gritty veteran. I don't want any reason for RR to tell DM that he has to be on the roster.
  15. Well if anyone will take a discount it would be JZ. I'm pretty sure he built himself a nice new house in the Auburndale area a couple of years ago.
  16. Have learned the reason Pena was not eligible for free agency was because he had signed his contract for 2015, and he could be assigned under the terms of that new contract. I assume the Brewers agreed in that contract to pay him at least as much as if he was on the 40 man roster, then they basically bought a 40 man slot. Sound right?
  17. Isn't WAR a counting stat? If so, is that counting when Reynolds (as 3B) and Overbay were both playing full games the same day or even when one was a PH or is this just their WAR as 1B? Also wasn't Lind injured for part of 2014 and missed some games?
  18. Baseball-Reference has positional splits. Here is the link to the Dodgers' 2014 positional splits. They got a line of .181/.283/.261/.544 from the catcher position... I had no idea it was that dire. To access these for any team, go to the team's main page, & from the gray menu bar (first item on the left is titled Franchise Encyclopedia), select "Batting" --> "Splits" Thanks, that was exactly what I was looking for, I even was tooling around the B-R site and couldn't figure out how to find them.
  19. They're done, just the three added listed above. Goforth among those available at Rule 5 time. For those with experience on the 40-man rules - Could they not be waiting to see what other teams put out there and then still throw one more player on the list since the deadline is midnight? Or is there only one submission? Maybe teams don't get that anal? Why wouldn't they protect up to the full 40 today, and when they need a spot, just cut Morris and/or Clark? You know they won't get anything in a trade and they are blocked by Lind. Another question, just an example, what would be the implications of dropping A.Pena off the 40man list, to add a Cravy? Would Pena be a free agent or if no one puts him on rule 5, he would have to come back to the Brewers system?
  20. Why would we expect that? His larger body of work suggests he isn't going to be much of a hitter. Obviously he would be one of the better "defensive catchers", but he did post OPS above .700 in 2 out of 3 seasons and at age 28, I don't see any reason with more frequent at bats, why he wouldn't ops close to .700 for a couple of years. I listed the Dodgers, as I have a buddy that roots for them and he wishes they had Maldy last year. For the Dodgers, Ellis at .577 ops was the highest, and I assume Maldy is a notch above any of those guys on defense. Granted that is hitting in the NL west. Where would one go to find team stats on what teams got from their catchers in total for a season?
  21. I feel as though we could sign two players to be our 4th and 5th OF and be more productive that way using less money than giving Parra. I liked the idea of Parra when Braun's name was being tossed around playing 1B but now, it just seems as though its a large chunk of money being spent on a backup player that may do alright if we have injuries. Example and there could be a lot of them but we could probably sign Jason Kubel who smacks around RHP's to be our corner OF guy and sign Emilio Bonafacio to back up CF, 2B, SS. This allows us to still have Schaffer in AAA in case of a serious injury somewhere during the season where we need help in all of our OF positions. We could probably get these players for $4-5mil combined instead of paying Parra $6-8 mil (really unsure of what he'll get). This allows us some more money to go and throw into our pitching department. Which is needed. Obviously, Kubel comes cheap, he hasn't done anything in 2 years and no one wanted him all of last half of the season. But, I wouldn't trust him at age 33 to be the main OF batting backup. I'm not against your plan of spending Parra's arby money on a righty-hitting, 4th OF and super utility, but I pass on Kubel.
  22. Baseball is swimming in revenues on a level the league has never seen before, so teams will spend it, even on head scratching contracts. Yeah, most owners have the team as a toy and not a real business and don't care about current net profit, the profit will be on the back end when they sell the team. Plus the rich savvy owner also realizes that even if he overpays for a player they are also making the teams like the Brewers also overpay for players in turn, which will actually hurt them competitively (hence also helping his team).
  23. I think saying 'anyone' is taking quite a bit of liberties. As far as I am concerned he is the LF as long as he is cheap, which should be the next couple of years. Since we have Parra, I would plan on some sort of 50/50 platoon, where Davis bats against some righties.
