  1. Lohse pitched .4 innings a game started more than Gallardo. Do I think Lohse will pitch better than Gallardo in 2017, no, - but in 2015, yes I do. But I wouldn't hold up the trade if Atlanta specifically wants one or the other.
  2. From the link in the thread: More than 200 players are arbitration eligible and unsigned for 2015. The deadline for teams to decide is December 2nd at 11pm central time. Non-tendering a player makes him a free agent. I'm pretty sure the Brewers would offer arby because he would still have value over his arby amount in a trade, I assume.
  3. Contract question? How many no-trades lists are set in stone from inception for the length of the contract versus the type of contract where the no-trade list is updated annually by the player (if the agent doesn't drop the ball)?
  4. Now I could see some owner do this, where they knowingly are going to blow up the team in two years. But MA has shown no signs that he is willing to do a total blowup. So excuse me if you are joking (I didn't see blue). That would be poor planning to assume that you would even be able to do that when the time comes. Yes he may pitch great and have value above contract two years later and/or baseball inflation keeps skyrocketing, but to cherrypick the younger years and assume someone to take on the rest of the contract without eating so much of it that you are ruining your own budget? Underperformance and/or injuries have to be expected at some point of the contract life.
  5. Melvin likes to have the closer figured out. So unless he dumps Broxton to re-sign KRod (save a couple of million?), I don't see this happening. I hope they don't do this as I think Broxton outpitches KRod next year and I suppose KRod would get a 2 year contract. I don't see Melvin trusting any of the other bullpen returnees to be the closer coming out of the gate.
  6. Its possible but a lot of things need to fall into place. 1. Braun and Segura have bounce back years. 2. Davis, Peralta and Fiers do not regress but instead continue to improve. 3. Gomez, Lucroy, Garza and Galladro all produce similar to 2014. 4. Lohse, Ramirez and Lind avoid the DL and show minimal to no regression. 5. We, as a team, stay relatively healthy. That is a lot of "ifs". Last season we also benefited from other divisional teams losing major pieces for extended periods. Cards: Molina, Wacha and Garcia Pirates: McCutchen and Martin Reds: Votto, Phillips, Latos and Bailey Not sure we can plan on this happening again. I think you put together pretty much the scenario that I would. I don't think it would be too much of a stretch to hope for a little better performance in 2015 from both Garza and Peralta. Combine that with better production at 1B and a healthy Braun, the hope would be to be in the playoff chase until Sept. Assuming the above, I can see the Brewers overcome a single long-term injury to any positional or pitching starter, except for ARam. We have Parra for the outfield, we have Nelson as the 6th starter, etc - but I don't see how you can assume close to ARam's production from a Jimenez, Herrera or Rogers or whoever is the backup.
  7. Well I am more Wausau way, I have directv and the Brewers are on. I do have the package where you basically get everything except the movie channels. I'm sure if you just get the basic package you probably wouldn't get Fox Sports nonetheless Fox Wisconsin (brewers, bucks). So probably not much help.
  8. What kind of return would justify trading Maldy? I don't think he will get you much more than a low level prospect or bullpen arm. Maybe if he can show better production nest season we can look to trade him then. For now, I like having the ability to play Lucroy at first and put him behind the plate. He calls a good game and is familiar with Peralta and Fiers from their time spent together in the minors. I think we would get more than a low level prospect for Maldy. He is definitely better than a handful of teams starters. If the Brewers were out of it last year, I bet the Dodgers would have ponied up a good prospect to get Maldy. You have to figure if he had more regular at bats, he would hit a little better than his career ops of .650.
  9. Yes, but if the Brewers didn't exercise their side of the option they had to pay a $4M buyout. Hence the net number of $10M is accurate when comparing what could the Brewers have done if they didn't go the ARam route in 2015.
  10. I think they are looking at it more as a way to keep Lucroy healthier and more rested, but his bat still in the lineup. Maldy isn't a terrible hitter and plays great defense. As long as Lucroy is fine with it and he actually plays over there in spring training to get better defensively over there.
  11. If ARam comes back and they need a 40 man spot, can they not just cut Jimenez? If so, what is the downside?
  12. I just think that Nelson, at age 25, isn't at all comparable to pitchers that were 3-5 years younger than him when they had their first season in the majors. But I'm sure there are plenty of pitchers that their first season were closer to age 25 that had a slow start, but were very good in their career. I know I still think he makes it and doesn't end up the next Ben Hendrickson, which is why I would be willing to gamble on trading away Gallardo.
  13. Not saying your premise is wrong, but you sure cherrypicked those stats. Greg Maddux - Age 20 & 21 seasons Curt Schilling Age 21 & 22 with a total of 9 appearances in those two seasons you throw that era out for Ben Sheets Age 22, 23, 24 So out of those, Randy Johnson is the only comparable age-wise to Nelson. And I find it curious you left out his few appearances his first season with a good era, but would include them for Schilling.
  14. But if you ask the Brewers you are just getting the starter sent to the bench that may be tiring a bit versus bringing in a fresh reliever that is throwing 95. Only about a quarter blue font on that.
  15. http://www.baseballintheblood.com/?p=1162 BitB: Michael was in the Brewers organization then, and he wound up as the Player to be Named Later in the CC Sabathia trade, tell me about that… Josh: “The deal was, if the Brewers missed the playoffs, the Player to be Named would be Taylor Green, who is another one of my guys, and if the Brewers made the playoffs, it was Michael Brantley. The Brewers made it, and Michael has really blossomed in Cleveland. The Brewers got what they wanted at the time, but I’m sure they wish they had Michael back.” I remember at the time it was thought the Indians had their choice of four different players and they were just taking their time to evaluate through the end of the season.
  16. The Brewers have the 16th pick, right?
  17. No. If we didn't have Broxton I would offer him a one year deal maybe close to $7M.
  18. Yeah, I heard him say on the radio they wouldn't move two starters, but possibly one. My guess, we trade Gallardo and change to get a corner infielder and depending on how big a name and what type of cost the guy is, make another move to bring in another veteran. That way when they fire a Narron+ and those other moves, that will be enough change to the roster to have the fans come out to see how they play.
  19. The money was discounted because the Brewers had to give up a pick. So we saved on his fair mkt value. Plus you can also say the Brewers took the first round pick money they would have spent and used it to acquire two Dominican players. So I guess if you want to look at getting good young talent, lets see where those kids end up, maybe one of them climbs the ladder at some point.
  20. Why, because he couldn't reach that grounder last night? If the A's are looking to shop him, the Brewers have to be at least interested. He would be under control for ages 29-31 at a cost of whatever his arby comes in at. I don't know anything about his defense. Do the A's have some hotshot coming through to make Donaldson expendable?
  21. ARam will not turn down the ~$15.0M QO, unless he hates Milwaukee that much to give up millions of dollars just to get out of town. He is going to have to discount his price quite a bit to get a 2-3 year contract from someone that has to give up a 1st round pick. He would probably just play for the Brewers for one more year and then sign one year deals as he goes. I sure hope the Brewers don't give Sandoval that type of contract.
  22. My biggest issue with Gallardo is the high pitch count he racks up so that he can't stay longer in games to help the bullpen out.
  23. Regardless, the point would be not to spend any money in 2015 and save it for 2016 if I trade away Gomez. If one of the "untested" 1B performs in 2015 and earns the 2016 job, great. If not, the Brewers would have to plan to spend real money on it in 2016.
  24. Replace Seid. Tell RR that hitting coach is canned. Have scouting staff see if there are any 3Bs that we can trade for that could be starter in 2015. Assuming none, tag and re-sign ARam for one season. I don't see any option as there are no internal candidates and I don't see any free agent that I would think lasts 3+ years that are worth the money. Trade Gallardo. I don't think he would get a huge return, after the option pricetag, but I am still doing it. I am going to risk the season that both Fiers and Nelson can be decent enough in 2015. If not, we sell off more parts in July. Arby Parra, pricey, but he adds all sorts the flexibility of platooning Davis or moving Braun to 1B or starting in CF if Gomez is traded. Arby Kintzler, Maldanado. Sign a loogie for the pen. Why wasn't Gorzy used at all when he came back, does anyone know????? Find a right-handed super utility IF that isn't a terrible batter. See what Gomez brings back in trade, targeting prospects that will be MLB by 2016. If he is traded: See what Lucroy brings in trade (which should be a ton), start Maldy. Try all the youth at 1B, consider 2015 their extended tryouts. Sell off parts at deadline. Save up money for 2016-2017 "go for its". If he isn't traded: Sign an setup guy for the pen. Spend the Gallardo money on LaRoche and give it another go in 2015, hoping that improvement from LaRoche, Braun, K.Davis, Segura makes up for any decline or injuries that may happen to Gomez, Lucroy, ARam.
  25. This is the one benefit to how the season is closing out. If the Brewers would have won enough games to squeak into the playoffs, lets say got past the play-in game, and won 1-2 games in their first round and then exited, DM would have been content to let the roster sit the way it is sitting now and just reshuffle 1B.
