  1. I mean, didn't they just do that with Pena? No. They have had Pena in the system for years and pretty much know what he is capable of, and he is a fringe bullpen guy. And if you read earlier in the thread it sounds like the Brewers were in talks to acquire Freeman before Pena had his one outing, so that probably had little consequence on the decision to drop from the 25 man.
  2. I agree, he is at best pretty ordinary. I assume its because he is what we have left from Grienke. Personally, I will count the Grienke trade as incomplete regardless. I thought Hellweg was the better pitching prospect and it seems he was coming on when he got hurt. Just the same as I wouldn't have counted the Grienke trade as automatically a win even if Grienke got hurt the next time he pitched for the Angels. Unless a player that is traded has an injury history, that seems out of a teams control, when judging a trade down the line.
  3. I don't know what Pena has ever done that has everyone up in arms that we might lose him.
  4. It was remote, but this pretty much cements that Garza isn't going to vest his option of 110 starts in four years.
  5. Based on a small sample....maybe he can? EDIT: And...lest I forget - "Scooter Gennett is on pace for 162 Home Runs!" Actually he's on pace for about 650. Nahhh. After he starts the season with 20 consecutive home runs teams will start walking him.
  6. So either way, Cappy being on this team is really not a big deal. Other than it will draw an extra 10 people to come to the park each night! So how much did Cappy sign for? Is it possible that Cappy is a better (or known) clubhouse presence to the youngsters, the kind the Brewers want to have a few around at the cost of a little upside?
  7. With the Nolin injury that is my guess what happens now. Morales and Pena get the last two spots but Pena better produce if he wants to keep his job. It's pretty likely that Pena would clear waivers. Relievers with his track record are a dime a dozen and with teams trying to get down to 25, I doubt his name on the waiver wire will make a GM stand up and take notice. There are only so many teams that already know they are out of the pennant chase at this point of the season that would be willing to use a roster spot on a Pena, and if he doesn't stick with the Brewers (one of those teams), then his chances are not good elsewhere. Of course if the Brewers want to send him to AAA, can he refuse and go to another teams AAA team if he feels he will have a better chance at a MLB roster?
  8. It isn't like Maldy hasn't been around the block once or twice, so I don't think the old hand on the tiller of the young pitching staff is that big of a deal. Even if we only had rookie catchers, if the pitching/scouting coaches are doing their job they are still going over the opposing batters strengths/tendencies and what the pitcher should be thinking about throwing in this situation, etc. It all gets called from the bench anyways. Lucroy doesn't even add value calling pitches according to this article, that I don't necessarily agree with how it can really be calculated. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/12880518/mlb-best-game-caller-dodgers-catcher-aj-ellis
  9. I think he meant "pay more because they are the cubs" and not "pay more than the next guys". Yes, exactly.
  10. Normally, but the Brewers are two full seasons away from worrying about records. If the Cubs offer the best deal that is acceptable, I have no trouble trading him without making them "pay more". By that third year is Lucroy still catching 115 games a year, and if so, still doing it adequately? Or is he playing mostly 1B? If Lucroy is the one keeping the Brewers out of the playoffs in 2018, because he is the reason the Cubs are beating the Brewers, then I say more power to him - but I think the odds are a little long on that scenario.
  11. Is there any team out there that "overpays" (compared to other teams) their prearby guys for any reason? Like the Mets and Brewers would pay DeGrom $650K or whatever, but Team X would pay that player $900k or $1M?
  12. You must be a Sith to make that type of absolute statement. Deja vu.
  13. How about the Brewers paying Garza's salary in order to get a better prospect? Garza and $5m for Austin Barnes! Don't know if you are serious (I don't know anything about the player), but I assume the Brewers would have to kick in more than $5M to get any type of real prospect. You could maybe trade Garza and $5M and get a bucket of balls, if the Dodgers get another injury / get desperate.
  14. value for SS, pitcher and $5.5M. The Diamondbacks obviously put a lot of value on their cost containment. So you can't forget the salary the Brewers are eating as part of the deal. Maybe the DBacks have someone else overpaid we can take plus prospect back for....
  15. I assume that if/when Lucroy is traded that whoever is the #2 catcher will get plenty of games started even if Maldonado is doing fine. There is no reason to not split up the games 60/40.
  16. Unless I missed something significant, I think Jungmann is a lock for the MLB team. I only mentioned Jungmann as my assumption whoever ends up the #6 starter will not be in the pen, but would be back in AAA. As for me, I don't think I would automatically give the spot to Jungmann over Davies. If Jungmann doesn't come in showing something, and Davies looks pretty good, Jungmann can go back to AAA as far as I am concerned. Jungmann has not earned the right to an automatic spot. I am not worried about Jungmann/Davies age, if retaining them was an issue, then I would use that also in my determination, but they both have options, right? Whoever goes down will have a job with the first injury or at latest when Garza is gone, as long as they don't implode at Colorado Springs.
  17. So many changes. Does this sound right (as it stands now)? Bullpen Locks: Smith, Jeffress Pretty much have a job unless fall off cliff: Blazek, Knebel, Thornburg Rule 5 guy who will have first shot at a spot: Jones 40 man roster guys: Barrios, Goforth, Pena, Guerra Non roster invitees who need to be great and get help: Jimenez, Misch, Tillman, Capuano, Boyer Assume minors: Barnes, Burgos, Cravy, Lopez, Magnifico, Hader, Houser, Davies/Jungmann (until injury or Garza departure) Edit: Add Boyer to NRI list.
  18. I would think it would be a stressful situation for a pitcher if he knows he can only give up a run or two or the game is over if we have no offense to speak of also. So horse a piece.
  19. That is a stretch. You are imputing your logic on another person. Logically, he shouldn't take peds, but logically people shouldn't take drugs, smoke, etc, etc. I don't think a team can assume he will stay clean the rest of his contract, so that will decrease (not eliminate) his value. STL assumes Peralta will stay clean...... How do you know what St. Louis was thinking when signed Peralta? What if Peralta would have received another $7M if they knew he was going to be clean, but since they didn't know, they discounted the amount they were willing to pay.
  20. I am thinking - "not planning on him being part of the future - then you might want him to play SS at the highest level, hoping he performs then you trade him as a young, slick fielding SS"
  21. I read it that the DBacks are sending $5.5M. So it is the Brewers must pay Hill $6.5M, but subtract Segura's salary for a net increase of cost of $3.9M.
  22. Lara is too far away to even assume he will make the majors, nonetheless be the starter at 3B for a playoff contender type team. I agree we need to be searching out 3B options in trades, but not if it costs us too much in value. In a few years, if it comes down to it, we can always sign a free agent if that is one of the pieces that would get us over the hump.
  23. My expectation would be .500 the 2018 season and competing for playoffs thereafter. You have two years to figure out what players are good enough for a playoff team, and then you start the expectations. Figure 2018 for a .500 season, and then you start spending the money to retain your guys and fill that one or two holes on the roster.
  24. I'm not saying to do this as you can't have so many auditioning for a job that it is counterproductive. But if he is clear and free to any team, can't the Brewers pay him a little more with the understanding you aren't going on the 40 man roster until mid-camp or something along those lines?
  25. That is a stretch. You are imputing your logic on another person. Logically, he shouldn't take peds, but logically people shouldn't take drugs, smoke, etc, etc. I don't think a team can assume he will stay clean the rest of his contract, so that will decrease (not eliminate) his value.
