  1. Doesn't seem to be the way that Melvin works. I assume Figaro, Wooten, Fiers, Schafer, Bianchi (injury status?) and one of Morris/Rogers - which is quite a bit more than Melvin usually brings up. But all of these guys other than Morris/Rogers have been up already this year. I don't see Blazek coming up if the Brewers lose any future flexibility as he hasn't been up at all this year. And if you assume Garza, Wang and possibly Henderson/Thornburg are back by then, they should have the pen covered.
  2. I sure hope they pick up Papelbon, our pen is looking to be the downfall of this team. Since he cleared waivers, I hope the pricetag has dropped. All depends on how motivated Phillies mgmt feels compelled to make a trade, I suppose. I assume they aren't as they didn't get a deal done before the deadline. Let's say we send over two of: Jungmann/Bradley/Gagnon/Pena and they pick up $5M of his 2015 cost? Would that be fair? We can even kick in H.Morris if the Phillies would pick up more. Chances are one of those pitchers would probably make the Phillies roster at some point on the cheap. And Papelbon pushes us over the hump and we win the central this year and he settles the closer spot for next years roster and he isn't totally toast when we are still on the hook for his contract in 2016. I would think Papelbon could live without closing for what remains of this season if he knew he was the closer next year.
  3. Well if they bring up Blazek they can have him pinch hit also. Saw he had a couple of hits and scored 2-3 runs in one of his last games started.
  4. I'm on the fence regarding the trade. I would be willing to jump off onto the go for it side if I knew the Brewers were upgrading the 1B spot also before the deadline. It seems to me if we are going for it, then truly go for it. We wouldn't need to help the bullpen as much if RR allows Price to pitch 8 innings with a 115-120 pitch count like the Rays have been doing.
  5. Trade him back to the Red Sox after the season. Red Sox save money this year, get to look at some younger guys and can have him back next year plus have a prospect or two to boot. Only a little blue, I assume the MLB has made this illegal?...
  6. Exactly. We don't need just another guy, we need a guy that is actually a big enough improvement to risk the chemistry change, that also can play decent defense who can cover 3B capably or Herrera will be playing big games for any ARam hiccups.
  7. I think the Cubs are more than one season away, so I don't think they should put too much of a premium price to division teams. In fact, they should help out the division rivals to a better record,, which will mean that much lower a draft pick in the future.
  8. I think we are spitballing people to add to the pen this year, because I would be willing to bet that Melvin makes a move for the pen. I wouldn't necessarily target Papelbon, I was just throwing my thoughts out there if he is the one we pick up. Picking up a guy that is proven veteran signed through 2015 isn't necessary by any means, but it would make it so that the Brewers don't overpay to keep any of the trio of KRod, Duke (who is earning himself quite a raise I bet), Gorzy. So you figure for 2015 some combination of Thornburg, Smith, Kintzler, Henderson, Jeffress, Wooten, Fiers, Estrada plus who they re-sign or have traded for this season.
  9. Don't they have two young pups that throw close to 100 throwing the 7/8 innings? I wouldn't think the Phillies would call it throwing in the towel on next season if they just move one of those guys into the closer role. As for what it would take to get him, I have no idea, but it has to be less than Street. Street is signed and is only going to cost $7M in 2015, whereas Papelbon is signed for 2015 for $13M and will probably vest the 2016 option at $13M and Papelbon is three years older. As for not closing, that would only be for the rest of this season. Under this scenario, I doubt KRod would be signed for 2015. He would just be brought in as an in season pickup.
  10. Yeah, but to me the saving wear and tear on Lucroy would trump the lesser defense at 1B. But I'm not saying do it all the time, once a week would be nice. Plus at this time I think Maldy's offense is slightly better than Reynolds offense. We keep waiting for that hot streak and it doesn't look like it is coming. Even with Reynolds getting the benefit of the semi-platoon status, Maldy's batting has been better.
  11. Or as CBS said: @CBSNews: Michael Jeter takes bow at his final All-Star game They then said: @CBSNews: Whoops, we meant to say DEREK Jeter takes bow at his final All-Star game http://t.co/csJROOgNWU I always loved Mr. Noodle, but it is a little late to give him props as he died in 2003.
  12. If I heard correctly, 1250 just reported that RR said Segura is back with the team.
  13. Braun and ARam remain "healthy". Someone (Will Smith or Jim Henderson) locks down the 8th inning.
  14. What kind of hitters park is Tuscon where he has played in 2011, 2012? Maybe it is a launching pad and teams are discounting the performance? Looking at his Japanese team, his OPS was only the 5th best on the team.
  15. With his defense and his .800 OPS, it would seem to me that he is a lot better than most team's starters, nonetheless being a bench guy. So I am not sure how he would take to that role. Unless the Brewers had another trade in the works to move K.Davis because the other team wanted a young OFer, I don't see this happening.
  16. Nobody on this team other than Lucroy makes the pitcher work, so their pitch counts are still good come the end of the game. Some of them are just not good enough to foul of pitches or have a good enough eye to lay off pitches once they get two strikes on them, so they want to get a hit before that happens. With Gomez ahead of Lucroy if he gets on base he can steal and Lucroy will have a hole at second to hit through.
  17. Yeah, but what is the cost of a Super Two status? I don't remember if it has been estimated in another thread. Let's assume Super Two would cost a million bucks, is one start worth that? Obviously it is not my money, so if MA wants to spend it that is fine with me. But if you were willing to spend a million on a fractional win, then it seems to me we can find better more bang for our buck elsewhere to improve on the win total. And it isn't going to matter if the Brewers don't start hitting.
  18. Or... the Brewers wait until after the year and trade Maldy and keep Zarraga as the new backup. Since Maldy is going to arby, they would save at least $1M. It would also give Maldy a chance to start. If Zarraga is at least average defensively, I don't think it would be a big problem. And if he isn't ready to start the year, you find some mid-30s retread as the backup until he is. It would give RR a switch hitter off the bench, as he isn't afraid to use up his 2nd catcher during the game to PH. If Maldy doesn't bring in something of value, then I guess you can see what Zarraga brings. I don't know why MLB teams would like Zarraga better if they are looking to find a starting catcher for 2015.
  19. Only if we aren't giving away too much because that player is only going to get spot starts and PH duties. And anyone you pick up has to be able to man CF because we don't have enough spots on the bench. How many guys are out there that wouldn't cost much that can play every position and are a substantial upgrade on Schafer that are on a team out of it? I don't know.
  20. Texas would definitely want something of quality in return, but it's not like they'd need to empty out the farm system. Speaking of Texas, Frasor is a cheaper type having a solid year and would just be a rental that I'm sure could be had at a reasonable cost. I guess if you bring in Soria, he would be the other experienced closer (Henderson) so the Brewers wouldn't need to resign KRod for 2015 (probably going to get close to Soria's $7M?). They would just pick up KRod later in the year.
  21. They would have to clear a spot on the 40 man for Jeffress. I'm not sure if there is a pay or service time issue with putting Hellweg and/or Hall on the 60 day DL, there seems to be some disagreement on the other thread, regardless the Brewers seem reluctant to do it.
  22. He was HBP. Stayed in initially, but was taken out after the inning ended. Thanks, thought he was okay if he was good enough to steal a base.
  23. Just following on gameday, any reason Davis was pulled?
  24. Yeah, but I think you are ignoring that Colorado doesn't have to move Morneau. Everyone except the Brewers may not want him, but that doesn't mean the Brewers have all the leverage. The Rockies I'm sure feel that they will compete for the postseason next year and Morneau will be a part of it. Still it seems to me that they will want to make room for a a young player like Wheeler or move an OF to 1B to make room for Dickerson when the OFs get healthy and should look to trade Morneau while he has the most value.
