  1. I don't understand not keeping Sanchez. You would think he would have had a decent chance at making the team, assuming they don't sign a free agent bullpen guy. So I guess Melvin is going to spend some money on a veteran to replace Gonzalez.
  2. I would say it is an overpay on the face of it (even with more media $), but SF has its own goals and I am sure that a deep postseason run in 2014 is probably the main one. I don't know what arms will be available as free agents and maybe they feel TL is one of the best of the bunch (despite the stats) so lets lock up this deal right away so we can focus on other areas. Maybe not the correct move for 25 teams in baseball, but for SF it might be.
  3. I hear you (& djoctagone). And ultimately, I don't think Prince will get picked. But I can certainly see a rebuilding or rebuilding-ish club taking the chance, after anyone with future upside is gone, of getting a utilityman on the cheap for the next 3-6 seasons. Actually I would think that a playoff contending team would maybe want a superutility player more than a rebuilding team. The playoff team may have a couple of single-role (PH, PR) guys on the bench and a Prince could cover more positions. Whereas a rebuilding team is looking to find the needle in the haystack high-upside type of guys that may be good player a year or two down the road - which I don't believe anyone is saying that Prince is that.
  4. Even if stats-wise they were the same, Price is also four years younger than Shields, which has to add more cost. How desperate are the Rays to shed the salary? If they absolutely have to deal him, then they may not get as good a deal as last go around, however. It seems to me the equation is for the Rays Prospects + $13M savings = Price + future 1st round qualifying pick. So you just have to figure out how much the cash and pick mean to them to equal prospects needed to swing the trade.
  5. So ESPN has an article on Price more than likely being traded this summer. For arguments sake, what would the Brewers have to send? Would a package of: K.Davis, T.Thornburg, J.Nelson, Taylor/Arcia be enough/too much?
  6. Bill Hall started downhill as soon as he got some money in his pocket. At least it doesn't appear that having money in his pocket has detrimentally affected Gomez play
  7. How does his .306 ave and .922 ops stats in Japan correlate towards MLB stats? Is it a bunch of short fences with little pitching competition or the opposite or somewhere in between? Similar to the PCL? He is definitely making much more in Japan than I would put in an incentives based NRI.
  8. He isn't really a "no risk" player is he? Aren't the Cubs basically going to arbitration now and if they do cut him during spring training he still gets paid a 1/3 of the contract or something?... Just wondering? I agree that the type of money we are talking about is basically "no risk" to the Cubs. Put me down in the I would rather have dropped one of the relievers recently picked up for the 40 man or Francisco before I cut ties with Gamel. But I obviously have no inside info, so hopefully they know something about his health or attributes that the Cubs don't.
  9. I wouldn't consider his 100 at bats of sporadic starts as definitive. I would hope his last two years of minor league stats is still a better barometer of future performance.
  10. A five year deal only gets him to the end of arbitration years. If the Brewers are going to do a deal now, they should be looking at least at six years with a team option for the seventh year - this is the point where the Brewers have the leverage. If you do a five year deal and later want to add years, then Segura has all the leverage as he already has enough money set aside if he gets a career-ending injury. If you don't have enough confidence that he is going to last 6-7 years, then you might as well just continue with him being year to year under your control. Well he mentioned pretty clearly in there, "if he sacrificed one year of free agency with a club option." 5 years+club option-6 years. Clear to you I guess. To me, why list a cost associated with a five year contract if he was really talking about a six year contract?
  11. No link, heard it on 1250.
  12. It sucks to tie up a 25 man roster spot with strictly a backup 2B, but I assume and hope they start the first month and a half in a strict platoon and then evaluate. Which should keep Weeks from too many at bats and earning any bonuses or activating the 2015 option.

  14. Your scenario is not logical. Either compare Aoki to Davis as a starter or compare Aoki to Schafer/Gindl as the backup outfielder on the bench - while keeping in mind that he costs four times as much as they do. Schafer is the late inning defensive replacement and gives Gomez a few days off. Gindl provides the LH PH bat and can get 50 starts while spelling Davis and Braun on days off against righties.
  15. No need to keep him either when you can get a little something in trade and save $1.5M using Schafer and Gindl as your 4/5 outfielders, with Gamel and Halton also as options for corner spots.
  16. I really don't see them adding more than one veteran at most. In fact they could cut Badenhop and still have many more than 7 young guys that have options they can stock the pen with. Besides all the cheap/signed guys they currently have up: Henderson, Kintzler, Hand, Gorzy, Figaro, Wooten, Blazek, you have the AAA guys like Heckathorn and Sanchez, plus whatever starting pitchers they move like Narveson, Thornburg, Fiers, Burgos.
  17. There isn't a buyout unless he gets 400 at bats in 2014. Which if he is brought in as a platoon guy for a team, they probably wouldn't have to worry about him getting that.
  18. I'm not going to hammer you that Betancourt would be fine as the 25th guy on the bench, but can we really trust RR not to play him more than he should? That is why you take the decision out of his hands by not signing him.
  19. I'd make that deal too but the Brewers would probably need to include Estrada. Buehrle is overpaid but he's still valuable as an innings eater and they'd need to replace those somehow. If the Brewers are tossing in Estrada then the Blue Jays better be picking up quite a bit of the tab for 2015. Otherwise, I would think the fair trade would be closer to straight up (but this comes back to how much money they have to spend). Buehrle had some value in 2013, where Weeks didn't, but Buehrle is signed for big money the next two years and he isn't a spring chicken. If the Blue Jays have money in their budget and no pitcher waiting to join the roster then they are not going to give much on the deal. If they are tight on the budget, have a AAA pitcher ready for the majors and their 2B options suck then they may give quite a bit on the deal and still be better off as a team.
  20. Unless the Brewers sign a FA pitcher they are not close to a $100M payroll. Bringing back basically everyone and adding Hart at $5M would still be around a $92.5M payroll. And they can get down to $88M if they trade Weeks by eating 2/3 of his contract and cut Badenhop (while okay, it seems we can get by with min.wage guys w/ options).
  21. Beg my pardon, if things get tight, why would Kentrail Davis need to be protected? I don't follow the minors that much, but his stats don't scream that he is someone that needs to be kept (under .800 OPS last three years) as it would seem to me he is blocked from a MLB OF roster spot by better players in Davis and Gindl. I do think that with the flexibility in the pen they probably will just let Badenhop walk and save $1.5M. If Figaro is going to cost anything they could remove him from the 40 man also. They should trade Aoki. Cut Yuni. Remove Olmsted. Plus there are a few names I don't know what their deal is - Manzanillo, Bucci, De La Torre that may be removed.

  23. I have no idea what Toronto has for a budget. Would they be looking to get rid of M. Buehrle and his $18M and $19M the next two years? Would we want him? Looks like he was healthy this year, but his ERA and WHIP creeped up. I can't see the Brewers wanting to pick up a guy with two years on his contract, so there would have to be some plan in place for 2015.
  24. Are you willing to pay $2M to Aoki to be the backup CF / late inning defensive replacement, when Schafer can be paid $500K to do it? I am of the opinion of no, so, yes, I would trade Aoki for just a random guy.
  25. I don't understand the angst. Lalli was off the 40 man anyways. And if we find someone better or when it comes time to protect our own players from the minors, we can always drop Ravin. My question is do they bring him in for the last handful of games so that they can see him in person before they have to make the hard 40 man roster decisions?
